Snow run, slow run

As we flew into Poland yesterday the ground had a light covering of snow, and by the time we reached the Russian border it was about a foot thick in places. Very pretty, really feels like we've travelled :)

Having got up at 4.15 am (after only 4 hours sleep) we reached our destination about 7pm UK time. An early (ish) night and a much needed long sleep were in order.

Today started late, I just wanted to relax. Took a lunchtime stroll around the town, about 5 km, but as it started to get dark Mr OBK suggested a run. My NRC HM had a 15 minute recovery run scheduled, perfect. After some dithering about what to wear (temperature is around zero) compromised on my normal running leggings, a warm thermal top that I happened to be wearing already, my running jumper, hat and gloves.

The pavements are covered in ice but it's not too slippery, even so there was no way I was going to run on them so I started when we reached the park. Coach Bennett's dulcet tones distracted me from the cold and I set off very gently. I ran 1.94 km at an average pace of 9'27" mins/km, slower than normal but I didn't want to go flying if I missed my footing on hidden hazards or the obvious ones like toddlers on sledges screaming down the sloped parts. Managed to keep my HR firmly in zones 3 and 4 so that's a positive too. When the 15 minutes was up I carried on for a few minutes more until I got back to the pavement and then it was back to walking.

I made a decision as I ran. The HM plan is great and I'm really enjoying it but I don't think that the speed/interval runs are a good idea while the conditions are like this. For one, running in snow is hard work. Plus it hides hazards and I don't want to get injured when I'm attempting to push myself, so for now it's on hold. I'm supposed to be attempting 10k at the end of this week but that might have to wait. It's not as if there's a date planned for me to finish this, it's all about enjoying the process isn't it?

PS (updated) originally there was no picture because it was dark but my husband took this one without me knowing 😂

Perfect Obk. Its all about the enjoyment and no need to take unnecessary chances 👍especially with the snow and ice.

Good post from you Oldbadknees and a very careful run in those snowy conditions, at least that area is having a winter this year unlike some places in the UK who are having temperatures of +12C.

Definitely winter that's for sure but it's positively tropical compared to today's weather in Novisibirsk, -48C 🥶 ❄❄❄

Now that is very cold, even for Novosibirsk, however, I notice from the latest world temperature chart that the temperature there is a more normal -16C., still very cold.

You're right, I misread the weather chart 😂 it's -48C in a place called Ust-Nera wherever that is!

Ust-Nera is in the Russian Republic /Region of Sakha, North East Siberia with its principal Town of Yakutsk where there is a parkrun, the runners at Yakutsk Parkrun run regularly in temperatures of - 30C or below.

As we all know, Alfred Wainwright wrote “There's no such thing as bad weather, only unsuitable clothing” and the man was right. 😀 Those guys know how to prepare, the same way as hot climate runners do when running in the heat. Our bodies are amazing, that's the key. 👍

Brave you, heading out in those conditions. The 10k and speed sessions can certainly wait.Love the photo! Could almost be an Impressionist work (albeit in modern sports clothes). Alternatively, it’s got the air of some of Peter Doig’s paintings.

Totally agree that the 10k attempt can wait. Very impressed that you ran in the snow though.

Snow is much better than mud!

Sure is! A crisp, clear day and firm snow nakes for a glorious run. Mud on the other hand......not so much. 😁

I’d be so excited to see all that snow, good decision not to push it, just enjoy your runs in the snow

Love reading your posts.

Sorry to be so ignorant OBK, but what are you doing in the frozen east?
