The Weather, the Tech and the Run

It’s blustery with heavy rain showers but if I’m going to do C25K at this time of year, then I have to be prepared to run in less than ideal weather. And in my humble experience, it’s hardly ever as bad as you think it’s going to be once you are out there.

My new Brooks Ghost 14, bought in September, are still in their box under the bed. Who knew it would be 3 months before I could run again when I got them? I really want to try them out, but I don't want to get them wet & muddy. Even if I am sticking to the road today, instead of beloved woods. Next run maybe...

I have a major faffage with the tech this morning. How do I switch on these lovely shiny new Aftershokz Aeropex headphones? A search for the instruction manual follows. Right ok. Now, where did I put my phone? Another search. Right. Fire up the Autumn HU HM & 10 K playlist (well, why not?) – headphones working great! Then Nike Run Club to log the kms for the office post-Christmas Distance Challenge, the c25k app. What else? Oh yes the watch!

Right I’m ready. As I step out of the front door the heavens open. Oh well, I’m out now, I may as well go…

The rain is stop-start all run and decides to pelt down just when I’m running into a headwind. Now I can’t see out of my glasses. 👓🙄But I’m loving being out here. 😁

I’m on Week2 of C25k, so its 90 second run, 2 minute walk intervals today. It’s hard to remember now how these runs felt first time around, but it’s a bit of a struggle for the first couple of run intervals, after which I ease into things. I try to concentrate on my form and keep everything nice and relaxed. As in Week 1, by the end I’m starting to really enjoy it and feel like I could carry on, but I don’t want to push it too far.

I stop the watch at the end of the run and then press End and Save in the c25k app. Not the same sense of euphoria I had first time round, but definitely a sense of achievement. And definitely much less out of breath.

Then I realise I forgot to press Start on the NRC app so my distance won’t count to the works Challenge 🤬.

Back home, stretches done, I having a coffee and check the stats and notice that the c25k app hasn’t saved my run! 🤬 Moreover, it didn’t save Week1 Run3 either! 🤬🤬

Oh well never mind. I know I've done it. And the works Challenge is only a bit of fun, and motivation for us to get a bit more active.

Now - where is that instruction manual to tell me how to switch off my headphones? 😁

The photo was taken on a Boxing Day walk in the woods. It's rained loads more since then, which partly explains why I'm running on the road instead of there.

Well done Birdlady, and well done with all that tech - it does throw us the odd curve ball doesn’t it! Beautiful photos, I hope you get back to running in the woods soon, it has been incredibly wet hasn’t it 🏃🏻‍♀️🏃🏻‍♀️🏃🏻‍♀️🎄🎄🎄.

Yep - the tech can be a right pain sometimes. I really hope it dries up a bit soon. I have trail shoes which are great in muddy conditions, but I need wellies to navigate the path down into the woods before I can start to run.

That is a great story. Well done for getting back out again. I'm sure that tech is there to annoy us 🤣🤣🤣

Thanks! The tech was particularly annoying today, but we can easily get hooked on it can't we?

Oh what a tech struggle that was!! It is dragging on this wet now isn't it. Could do with some nice frosty sunny days please!! Well done on getting out even with all that technology!!

Oh what would I give for some days like that. I can handle the cold, it's the grey murk and wet I hate.

Cor blimey 👆👆 That is a lot of tech. I love the 'Definitely a sense of achievement' line. You are right though, run days are just those; regardless of weather or conditions, it's 'go' time. Keep on keeping on 🙏

Yep you are right GTFC - way too much tech tbh. I love the new headphones though. They will be ace in the woods for podcasts and the Headspace guided runs I like to use - I will still be able to hear the birds calling, wind in the trees, my foot steps on the earth....

Well done on getting out again 😁👍Looks wet and muddy !

How's the new headphones ?

Only used them once but am impressed so far. Very comfy, even with specs and feel very secure. Not the same sound quality as over ear or noise cancelling ear buds etc, but you wouldn't expect them to be, would you?

Not sure how they'd be in the noise of heavy traffic, but for where I run they'll be perfect.

Hope you had a good Christmas Ian - how was the live gig you went to a while back?

Thanks so much Roxdog! Looks like I might need to get my shorts & vest out again for tomorrows run. The weather is mad!

Indeed! I went for a short run this morning and was too hot in my leggings and short sleeved tshirt, even though it was raining!

Sorting out all the tech is the hardest part! Aeropex are great, I use them in the house doing chores, forget I've got them on.

I'm with you on the new shoes, keep them safe until it's dry outside :)

Birdlady64 profile image
Birdlady64Graduate10 in reply to Newbie59

I know they'll eventually get dirty and I wont care anymore, but they need to be shiny and new for a while to start with! 😁If I wear my aeropex around the house, I won't have any excuse for not hearing Mr B when he calls me. Advantage or not?....🤔

Ah, a true tech-misery-day! But you did it and that's what counts!
