Runderwear anyone?

A quick question for you. Do any of you wear special pants for your runs? Just asking as I have been getting a bit.... er.....challenged in the underwear region on longer runs.

Any suggestions?

Shorts with built in pantie 👍🏻 game changer! 👌🏻 you'll never want to wear knickers ever again 🤣

I might hold this suggestion in reserve. I hardly ever wear shorts and have bought a few leggings recently so feel as though I need to hold off a bit. Do they do leggings with built in knickers as well?

GoGo_JoJo profile image
GoGo_JoJoGraduate10 in reply to Fionamags

I would have said the same, until I tried them. 👍🏻

Yes, there is such a thing as "gusseted" leggings, needing no underwear. I think that feels even more naked than the shorts though! 🤣

Just plain cotton.

Yesletsgo profile image
YesletsgoAmbassadorGraduate10 in reply to Deals1

Not sure I agree with you for running, though generally cotton is most comfortable. On a long sweaty run cotton gets soaked and clings which is not very nice. A technical moisture wicking pair of knickers is so much more pleasant.

Mmm.... Yeah u r right re the sweatiness. I've never tried anything else really.. but I think I'm going to look into it too ,👍👍

During the first lockdown I read loads of running books recommended by some one on here. Several said no underwear is the way to go. Quite liberating but I do worry in case I end up in hospital 😂😂Seriously though I bought a pair of Runderwear knickers but the fit wasn't that good for me but they were lovely material and really well made.

In the summer I just wore my shorts with built in knickers which as Go Go says are a game changer.

Haven't seen any of those. Must have a look.

I use Runderwear on my bottom half. I have both the shorts style ones, and the ones with ordinary legs. They are great. When I did the London Vitality 10k in 2019 there was some sort of women’s body positive movement (can’t now remember what it was called) having loads of women run in just Runderwear bottoms and a sports bra. They give good coverage and last well, but I don’t think I’d go that far. I am too heavy of boob to give their bras a go - it’s ShockAbsorbers only for me.

Good to hear a vote for Runderwear. Have just ordered some in the sale. Wasn't sure if they were meant to be actual underwear or those nippy wee pants the Olympians wear. I'm a shock absorbers fan too!

Another vote for Runderwear knickers. I find them very comfy and they're made with moisture wicking material. An absolute game changer for me 👍

Are they true to size would u say?

RunWillie profile image

I have the Womens brief in size S which fits me well but the Womens hipster S is quite small for me so would size up next time. Hope that’s helpful 👍🏻

I used their size calculator where you enter waist and hip measurements and it worked for me 🙂

I bought the winter runderwear merino wool briefs and they are lovely to wear on a cold day but they have severe vpl as they are quite tight around the top of the legs. I got the merino wool running socks and I absolutely adore those.

Also in their sale I bought summer shorts with short legs but I've not worn those yet :)

Great question! I'm interested to see what people say too ☺️

From a guy's perspective, one of the concerns is "public modesty". Some may remember the controversy of Linford Christie's "lunchbox".

The other concern is chafing. Having things securely held in place helps a lot with that.

I have all-in-one shorts for warmer days (mesh gusset, short tights and shorts combined). They have handy mesh pockets at the waist too.

For other times, I have some compression shorts which I wear as underwear, also specific running undies (Decathlon) with no seam at the bottom, hence no VPL when wearing running tights with them.

Fionamags profile image
FionamagsGraduate10 in reply to nowster

Yes I think chaps have other issues to consider.... I had to confiscate a pair of my husband's cycling shorts in the interests of modesty. They start off fine and then suddenly they've worn a bit thin. Not a good look.... 😳

I've checked out the tights/leggings that I have and they are not likely to treat me well if I try roseabi 's commando suggestion. Too many seams 🥴🥴. Runderwear sale duly perused - shall give them a go.

roseabi profile image
roseabi in reply to Fionamags

Hmm, I wasn't suggesting you go commando, I was just having a joke with Jo!😂

MrBassmanjazz profile image
MrBassmanjazz in reply to nowster

Not sports - but Cross Hatch also no seam at the bottom.

nowster profile image
nowsterGraduate10 in reply to MrBassmanjazz

Seams are only a problem for me if they're straight up and down, and make no accommodation to support the dangly bits.

The most comfortable ones I have have no seams at all (except at the waistband).

My running knickers are chosen for comfort - light, breathable fabric, and minimal seams. The rest of the time I have something of an obsession with matching underwear, often Rosie for M&S.

Why oh why though do manufacturers insist on using horrible, itchy, scratchy look-at-me-I'm-all-plasticky-whiter-than-white labels on underwear? I have to cut them out! They're irritating under running gear, and ugly in pretty undies.

Frizzbomb67 profile image
Frizzbomb67Graduate10

I run in M&S no VPL short style knicks. They stay put, are comfy and give no VPL (obviously). They are also 3 for 2 or some such offer.

RunWillie profile image
RunWillieGraduate10

I wear Runderwear undies for running. I’ve got two pairs & will be buying more next year! I’m not sure I would risk going commando after birthing five children 😱

Fionamags profile image

Another consideration 😉

I wear skimmies from jockey for running. My shorts are very short so the skimmies stop my thighs rubbing and don't have a lot of seams, labels or ride up. Also very breathable with cotton woven into the gusset.

Love my runderwear undies, runderwear is fun to wear for me

Cheapskate here! Decathlon running knockers for me. They wick moisture and are very comfortable even in summer. Apparently you're not supposed to use fabric conditioner when you wash them so I don't and they're lasting well.

I don’t have any suggestions although from a chaps point of view I have notice my pants wear out quicker since running - but lying here isolating with COVID it has brought a smile to my face 😊

I highly recommend jersey silk which has an open weave so wicks sweat away very, very quickly. I’ve been wearing silk for mountaineering for years, cool and dry in summer, warm in winter. I’ve found they are great for running too!

Sounds terribly posh, but I always buy my jersey silk knickknacks on ‘special order’ from a UK company called Suli’s Silk. I get them specially made with a jersey silk gusset and without any scratchy labels (cotton gusset and labels are standard otherwise). Cheaper than most sports knickers at only £18.00 a pair

sulis.co.uk/silk/Briefs.htm...

Avoid cotton gussets…awful, sweaty smelly stuff as are most synthetics.

Happy running! : )

As ever I’m late in responding but having read everyone’s comments I think I might try some runderwear! Until now I’ve been a strictly ‘big girl’s knickers’ sort of a gal - there’s too much of me to go commando (as others have said, in the event of an accident my very low embarrassment threshold would kick in!) and sadly the world isn’t yet ready for me in shorts of any type! But I hope you manage to resolve your dilemma soon Fionamags!

Coddfish profile image
CoddfishGraduate10 in reply to Oldgirlruns

Runderwear are full coverage items, I don’t think you would have a problem with them. The ones described on the site as hot pants work best on me for running but I also use their briefs for the gym. Am tempted to get some of their long running shorts for the winter.

Coddfish profile image
CoddfishGraduate10 in reply to Oldgirlruns

In fact I have just ordered some of their long running shorts. Will hopefully be using them next time we do parkrun together, so I can tell you all about them.

Thanks to all of you for the fab responses! Have Runderwear on order from their sale.

If you want something fairly cheap, I find the latest version of M&S synthetic knickers work well. They come in packs of 5, I think, in black. I think they’re the « bikini » style ones. They’re so thin and soft that you barely feel them, and I find they work well for both running and hiking (with no concerns about being found Commando if taken to hospital!)

I then add either leggings, or shorts with built in (reasonable length) Lycra inners, to avoid my thighs chaffing.

Dups profile image
DupsGraduate10

I swear by Runderwear. Really comfy knickers , no seams, I never go commando! However liberating it might be 😂 I would also recommend the running bras as they too are really comfortable with no seams etc. I think the knickers were about £11 and the bras around £50 but I think well worth the spend

Roxdog profile image
RoxdogGraduate10

I bought some 'runners' knickers but didn't like the band at the top which dug in. So I just wear my usual underwear, just my rather old ones though! I keep thinking about buying some, but they seem expensive and I am rather particular!

Fionamags profile image
FionamagsGraduate10 in reply to Roxdog

I have my softest, comfiest knickers on rotation for my runs. But even so, the chaffage makes itself felt when running for more than an hour. That's what has set me on this Great Knickers Quest.

Roxdog profile image
RoxdogGraduate10 in reply to Fionamags

I just get chafing where my bra is around my ribs! I think you can buy anti chafing cream, but am using vaseline 🤣
