2 hours - 14K

Hiya,

In my quest to 10 miles I had planned for 14K today, the farthest I have ever run. As always I Jeffed also this run at a ratio of 4min30 / 0min30.

Took my usual 10K route, though I went the other way around for the first 5K. All went well, found a nice rythm and enjoyed the run. At 5K I realized this run felt better than my 12K last week. But I have done my best to hydrate and I slept a bit better last night, 2 very important factors.

Passed a bunch of people and got mixed results to my called out hello's. Kept going, though I must admit that I felt myself slow a bit and indeed kilometers 8 - 9 - 10 were a bit slower. I thought I was slowing down ever more afterwards, but the stats say I was slightly faster again.

In the last kilometers I was struggling. But I had put together some aparatus yesterday with lots of bending and getting up again, so might be my legs were a tad sore before my run already.

The last kilometer felt as if I was crawling along instead of running, but the stats say it was my third fastest kilometer. It really is weird how your feelings can deceive you.

Despite struggling, I did finish my 14 kilometers in a (for me) nice time of 2:00:27. I had planned to go for the 10 miles next weekend, but I am starting to doubt wether I will be able to, having struggled so hard on 14 kilometers...

Cheers, Evy

Nice run for you today Evy, there is still a chance for you to run 10 miles, just over 16K, take the run slow and steady, slowly increasing the distance perhaps by either 1K a week or 500 metres a week, although I don't think that you should go for the 10 miles next week.

in reply toAlMorr

I know I should take it slower. But I just want that 16K out of the way to go back to 10K. And I want it out of the way next weekend because I don't want to force myself the 2 weekends after (have a week off work then and want to take it easy then). Stupid reason, I know. But I am stupid that way 😶

You are a very good example of a runner pushing themselves or putting on too much pressure, that might lead to a spell on the IC, if you do run 10 miles next week, good luck, take the run especially slow and steady.

in reply toAlMorr

I do push myself too hard often. I have this annoying habit that when I want something, I need it to be done, no extension allowed. In college in my last year, I could not handle re-exams in summer (how do you call it in English?). So I pushed myself so hard to succeed in the first set of exams in June, that I ended up with an anxiety disorder (which plagues me now still and for which I saw tens of shrinks and therapists and take meds for).

I push myself now to reach 10 miles and I want it over with. I have already had to postpone it due to my sciatic nerve. So this is already the second chance. I need to reach this 10 miles and get it over with to finally be able to run relaxed again.

But no worries about overexerting myself. I feel pain very quickly. Hence also the fact that my rheumatic arthritis is under control (because I was quick in feeling the pain). So if anything goes wrong during the run and I risk injury, I won't be able to continue even.

Well done, Evy!

Are you taking energy gels or jelly babies, and water with you?

in reply toIan5K

For this run I took my very first real gel at 1 hour of running. An isotonic gel from SIS I think it was. And every 30 minutes a gel-jelly as I always do. They are jellies made from gels but they are 1/5th of the amount of a gel.

Always got water with me. Drank my full 600 ml bottle empty this time!

I'd say a big 'well done' so far 👏👏👏 I also go by feel with all of my runs; on that day and in that moment. If you go out next week for the 10m and start steadily, and as you grow into the run you feel good, then go for it 😃

in reply toGTFC

Thanks, I will certainly feel if I can do more or not!

And this is everything. Running can easily be over complicated. Prepare well, bring a good version of yourself on the day and go for it 🙏

Personally I would drop back again next weekend !I notice in your reply to AlMorr that you said you just wanted it out of the way ?

Why ?

It will wait for you !

If it was a tough 14k today then drop back to 10k next time .

It's ages ago since I did my 14K , will I get to 10 miles ? Yes !

Does it matter when ? No, absolutely not 😁

in reply toInstructor57

I want it out of the way, because it nags at me. I will only find rest in running again once I reached the 10 miles. And the 2 weekends after next weekend I have to take it easy. So I have to get it out of the way next weekend. Sounds foolish I know. I'll just see how I feel next weekend. Going to take it easy this week anyhow. Maybe a 5K and a 3K.

It dosent have a 'Do before date'

But if today was tough then it may be sensible to drop back !

Whatever you decide , good luck 😁👍

Well done! I was off the forum for a long time so have only recently seen your posts so haven't followed your journey. It sounds like you're loving running and aiming for that 10 miles and maybe more is great.I managed one single 10 mile run about a year ago. I didn't exactly jeff it, but did have a few breaks to eat something, take some photos etc, so a couple of walking breaks. However, that 10 miles was after quite a few 10ks. 12ks, a couple of 14ks etc. So I didn't go straight from one to another. I don't know how many 10ks you've done, but it might be worth feeling a bit more comfortable with the longer runs first. That said, the stars might align and it just happens! Sometimes the time is just right. I hadn't really been aiming for the 10 miles I ran, it just so happened that I carried on running! That's always the way I've reached a particular distance rather than setting out with that goal planned. But that's how it goes for me!

It sounds very exciting anyway and a great run.

in reply toRoxdog

Thanks, I do have a bunch of 10K's in my legs in the meanwhile, I do at least 10K in the weekends. Don't know if it is enough. Have done 11, 12, 13 and now 14 in the meanwhile too. But I'll see how it goes when I am running ☺

Roxdog profile image
RoxdogGraduate10 in reply to

Ah well, that 10 miles is completely achievable! But only if you're feeling it on the day. See where your legs take you! Look forward to that post!

Woollyweaver profile image

Well done on your 14k, Evy, that is a great achievement in itself. But 2 hours is a long time on your legs. I tend to agree with Almorr and Instructor57 - are you sure you are ready for the 10 miles? Might it be a good idea to consolidate the 14k distance until you don't feel quite to exhausted by it? Then you will be able to celebrate a strong and triumphant 16k when the time is right....My little sensible mantra to myself at times like this is always "just because you could, doesn't mean you should"!

But I get that you have got it into your head that you need to do this! Promise us at least that you will be sensible and stop if you start to feel any unfamiliar niggles - a spell on the IC would be most unwelcome. And remember to enjoy the moment - that's what it is about. Good luck 🤗

in reply toWoollyweaver

I will be sensible and qtop if I feel any pain. I don't plan on doing 14K regularly, it is just a step to 10 miles. Once I reach 10 miles, I drop back to 10K, my favorite distance ☺

AlMorr profile image

Some runners do get a bit of the running bug, for a while I thought I would never run any more than a 5K, that didn't last long, I went on to run a 10K, so far I have ran 20/10Ks, then gradually like you Evy I increased the distance, 1K a week to 16K/10 miles, I have ran 5/10 mile runs, however, I don't think that I will run further than that, I am comfortable with 10K, if I do run any further than a 10K, it won't be until well into 2022..

in reply toAlMorr

I think I am like you. I like the idea of a HM. But I don't think it would be good for my body. So when I reach this 10 mile, I skip back to 10K as my max. Should I want to try another 10 mile, it will be well into 2022, if at all!

AlMorr profile image
AlMorrAmbassadorGraduate10 in reply to

Good morning Evy, every time that I have run 10 miles I am NOT shattered at the end but my legs feel that if I went on to the HM I couldn't walk, let alone run for a few days, I don't want to lie in bed recovering, let alone on the IC for any time whatsoever, perhaps if I had more training by some expert I could do that but like you I feel 10K is just a nice distance to run, have a lovely Sunday, I am about to leave for a 10K WALK.

in reply toAlMorr

It is not that I was shattered yesterday either, just had tired legs that were a bit sore. But I had done a lot of bending and stuff the day before which I am not usd to either. So that might have played up too.

But I just don't think going past 10 miles would be wise health wise. I don't even think doing 10 miles every week would be wise, running for 2h20 every week sounds a too heavy attack on my body.

Just going to keep to my weekly 10K to get some regularity in my legs and to strengthen them. And in spring I'll see if another 10 miles is going to happen or not ☺

Enjoy your walk!

Hello BlackScorpion, Well done on your distance PB today. 👏🎉🏃‍♀️ PBs are always worth celebrating. I really felt the same about wanting to complete the 10 mile distance, and so I know that I progressed more quickly than may be recommended during my last few weeks.

It's interesting that you wrote that you were struggling, but your stats informed you that you were going faster than you thought.

As you so want to receive the big ✅ for 10miles, I wonder how many factors you can work in your favour during the previous week. Clearly sleep and food and not partaking in any exhausting activities. What was your elevation gain today, can you choose a route with less elevation gain? Can you slow down so that your energy lasts longer. I have my Garmin showing average running pace, and then each km my Garmin displays my pace for the km just completed.

I am sure that you will listen to your body and respond to any messages that it gives you. What do you listen to while running? Can you also choose something that will help in some way?

I'm actually going to drop my distance way down from last week's 10miles. I haven't quite decided it may be 6 km or 7km. Lots of elevation gain (over 200m) so that it will take me about an hour. It is interesting that 10km is your favourite distance. I haven't developed a favourite. I wonder how much you run in each week, my usual is 2 runs of 30 minutes and a longer one. My 30 minute runs are generally one easy pace and one with intervals. I think that this is less running than some folk do if they are building up to 10 miles.

Whatever you choose I hope that you enjoy it. I think of running as an investment in my health and so appreciate the stamina that it has given me. I seem to be able to continue gardening tasks, for example, without needing a break. A real improvement from before running.

Happy running to you. 🏃🏻‍♀️😊

in reply toover61andstilltrying

Hiya, my elevation gain is not too much. I live rather very flat here in the city. No hills or anything to climb. So nothing to gain there.

As for pace, I am rather slow. I start at about 9:30 min/km and gradually increase during the run until 8:30 sometimes with spikes of 8:00. In short runs I can jump into the high 7 min/km, but that is exceptional. I think my pace yesterday was ok, maybe I can try to keep it a little bit slower in the first 10K.

I have my Garmin set up the same as you. So I can regulate a bit my pace at the beginning. But I must admit that the longer the run takes, the less I look on my watch.

I don't listen to anything while running. I prefer hearing the noise around me. I have run with music in the past, but I prefer letting my mind wander on its own.

As to how much I run depends on how often I can run. I try for 3 runs a week, but have sometimes appointments or life interfering. IF I can get in 3 runs, it is two times 5K (43 mins) and one time 10K (85 mins). If it is only 2 runs, it is one 5K that gets slipped.

I will just see how I feel next weekend. Yesterday for example I had hormonal migraine which I solved with meds. Maybe that had some effect too? And that period of the month might have caused some effect on my legs too. No idea. Maybe next weekend the stars will line up and it will go smoothly. And maybe they wreak havoc and I have to stop after 8K. We'll see ☺

Well done, it certainly does look like you're within touching distance of 10miles. Reading about it is actually giving me a little itch to run further, but I'm not sure when I would fit such long runs in. Maybe one for when the days get longer again. Funny what you said about pace, I also can't guess my pace, sections that felt like running on the spot turn out to not be so!

in reply toDylanTheRabbit

I have the luck that I can do my long runs in the weekends. No worries as to when I come home or so. During the week the faster darkness is annoying me too. Luckily I have to work from home again until early Januari, so I have the normal travelling time I can use now to run earlier ☺

What a great run! You should be really proud of yourself. I know the feeling battling that last km as though it’s never going to end, but somehow we get there. Well done 👏🏼.

It is very mental, I have the same with walking. When I know it is almost over, it is as if I can't continue. I always have it.

Yessss... as long as I keep hydrating well and get a good sleep the night before, I should be able to do it. No that-time-of-the-month next weekend and normally no appliances to put together the day before. So fingers crossed!
