Shaking it up a bit

From starting C25K back in early March I was running pretty much the same route week in and week out. I liked knowing exactly where I was in terms of distance covered and time to get home etc. NRC kept urging me to change it but I HATE being told what to do....

Anyway, a week or two ago I decided to follow a different path branching from my normal route. It's really knocked me out of my complacent dithering. Instead of just doing the same thing I've now decided I'm going to do a recovery run, a speed/endurance/fartlek/interval type run and a long run every week instead of just 3,4 or 5k. Last week the recovery run on Monday turned into a race against myself but I won so that was good. Then intervals on Thursday and 6k on Saturday. This week did a very slow easy 'Run with Headspace' on Monday,3.09 km in 30 minutes. Today tried 'Out Strong, Back Fast' which half killed me towards the end but I did it and feel fantastic now. I've also taken up a beginners yoga class so that's a long held ambition finally filled.

Now I'm working up (mentally) for my 'big run' at the weekend. I might do it on Friday as I have to go somewhere on Saturday, and much as I'd like to try Parkrun again I'm not sure I'll have time. I can't run on Sunday as there's a local 10k run which will covering my usual route. I was going to enter but my ankle injury put paid to that as no opportunity to train :( . So, I'm looking forward to the fun of planning my next run. Will it be another 6k? or 4 miles? or Parkrun? Ooh, can't wait to find out...

Pic is from Monday, tilting at windmills :)

PS just double checked, the 10k is in two weeks time so maybe I will run this Sunday. As well as Friday :)

Oh wow! It sounds like you’re having so much fun exploring those running legs! I still get the same kind of buzz trying something new that I can feel from reading your post.

Upwards and onwards, and that 10k is already peaking around the next corner!

You betcha! When I saw it's still 2 weeks to the 10k a little voice said 'go on, you know you want to'. Luckily a more sensible voice said 'don't be daft, 2 weeks is nowhere near long enough for a short chubby sixty something to progress safely from 6k to 10k'. The next one is May bank holiday next year, definitely a possibility....

Sounds like you've reached that lovely stage where your body sees running as "normal" and you can have fun exploring what you can do with the new found ability! Happy running!!!

Ooh I hope so!

You could do Park Run and then do another run straight after. Just don't expect a PB on your PR as your brain will tell you to slow down as there will be more to go after the first 5K. That is my excuse for a slow PR.

My one and only time doing PR I knocked 3 minutes off my PB and it killed me 😂 not sure I can risk it given what I have to do the rest of the day 😁
