After graduating last month and then suffering a heavy cold that forced me to take a week off I’ve been diligently running three times a week but my long runs have only been 7km and 5km. I’ve noticed that I’m getting faster on the shorter runs but I didn’t want to lose the endurance I’d gained and I really wanted to check my 10km wasn’t a fluke so I knew I needed to do another soon!
It was a warm but damp morning and I wasn’t particularly feeling it when I set off so I decided to do a slow 5km and see how I felt - once I got there I decided to carry on for some loops of the green that would get me to 8km and by the time I was on my way there I knew I’d really decided to do 10km!
I didn’t check my distance until I was at 9.1km (I was doing a different route than usual so I wasn’t sure exactly when I’d need to stop and I decided to check at what I guessed would be 9km, so I was pretty spot on!) and that last bit really dragged! I wasn’t at all focused on pace today but I did notice at that point that I’d probably beat my first 10km time, which was 1:13:00. And I did, I completed 10.01km in 1:09:54 at a pace of 6:59/km, very pleased! And yes I did do the extra 0.01km deliberately so I could beat my previous distance on Strava 😂
