W6R3 - 6 runs to 10km!

I usually do my long run on a Saturday morning but I’m home alone tonight and had finished work by 6pm so I decided to go for it and start my weekend on a high (I was the child who did my homework on a Friday night!).

I’d worked out a 9km route but it involves one really long stretch on the same road and partway through it I decided I couldn’t quite face that so instead I did my 5km route followed by my 4km route, which felt easier as they’re so familiar to me now, even though my map looks a bit less impressive!

It was a bit hotter than I’d bargained for and about 6km in I was feeling pretty tired, which worried me, but I managed to fight through it and I really enjoyed the last couple of km.

In total I ran 9.01km in 1:05:42 at a pace of 7:17/km - no Strava medals today but I’m pretty proud of those splits, I wonder if I’ll be able to duplicate every one by the time I finish?!

Oi! Negative splits over 9km? Are you sure you're not related to Jools2020 ? 🤣

Haha, I am super lucky that it seems to come naturally as I don’t think I could do it if I set out to, I’m not good at pacing when I try!

I know. Some days it just happens. Other days they're all over the place.

I know mine will be all over the place tomorrow doing parkrun in the hilly Chadderton Park.

Oh yes, it’s pretty hilly there, one advantage to running in the city centre is it’s flat as a pancake!

Factoid: The base of the City Tower off Piccadilly Gardens is the highest point in the centre of Manchester. Part of Britain's gold reserve used to be in an underground bank vault under an anonymous building in a nearby street, safe from flooding.

The city centre isn't that flat! From Portland Street down to Deansgate is a drop, and similarly down towards Piccadilly Station and Whitworth Street is also a drop.

You’re right, I should say where I’m running, which is actually partially out of town up towards Newton Heath. Up Great Ancoats St is reasonably uphill too. It’s the flattest marathon in the UK though, isn’t it? I grew up in Saddleworth so it’s flat by my standards!

Thank you - a new one for me but I’m feeling pretty pleased with my past self this morning!

Those splits are amazing - slightly spooky actually! Don't know how you managed that. Great 9k though and a cracking time too.

It’s weird, isn’t it?! I’ve done two lots of identical splits before now but never three and I’m sure I couldn’t replicate it if I tried! I’m very lucky that the negative splits seem to come naturally, I’m not good at pacing myself when I try.
