Early morning 4.5k and poor hubby 🤕

I managed to get out there for an early 6:30am morning 4.5k, so not quite able to be used for a (not) Parkrun.

Hubby and I also didn’t make it to the Parkrun route (The Wammy) yesterday as planned, as after our morning yoga in the garden (which was … mmmmhhhh 😀😍: healthunlocked.com/strength... ) those legs in the linked picture took a beating when hubby couldn’t resist the request to play tennis with our teenage son.

So mom’s 5k took a backseat (I was humming and hawing anyway), but the whole game was cut short when hubby hurt his calf muscles again. I have a feeling it’s a proper tear, as the pain seemed to come quite suddenly.

So hubby is again on a lengthy injury couch, and I will have to yoga and run all alone again! But poor hubby 😭, as a really sporty person he is really getting annoyed at spending so much time on the injury couch. And of course we’re constantly wondering why?!

For my run this morning, everything was ok and it was nice. I donned my old cheap and low rise shoes, that keep me running on my toes. Music was a German band with great funny verses (“Ganz schön feist”).

My classic former rail route is reliable as always, and I’d say it would be a perfect Parkrun Route if it weren’t for the fact that it’s missing 500 meters

Happy running everyone!

Well done getting out early great time of day birds chirping and not as many people about.

Your railway route looks a bit rough to mine, mine is more a path beside railway but yours is nice and flat like mine. Fate must be happening I went for just about 10 km walk yesterday and put it on Active 10 and came back and Mr Doris pulled his Calf and limping . He’s on IC as icing yesterday and feet up . Only thing is not getting much rest as working and on feet all day so he’ll have to rest tonight. He’s not a good patient 😕. He doesn’t stretch after runs and walks for a wee bit to warm us before running. No bruising on calf so hopefully not a bad strain. Probably out about month or so. Isn’t your calf sore running on your low rise shoes? Keep up the good work 👍🙂

Thank you! What a coincidence! It must be hubby calamity day!

My calf muscles seem to be holding up without any problem since I started running 18 months ago. But I reckon it is due to the ultra-slow Japanese running. So I am not pushing speed, only slow distance. Only thing I had issues with in the past was knees. But doing knee strengthening workouts really helped.

Great stuff and big thanks. And give your hubby get-well wishes from the two of us. I can see how frustrating an injury like that is.

Sorry to hear about Hubby’s injury CBDB, hope he heals soon! Your running route looks lovely and your music choice is interesting- having just googled the band, I’ll have to brush up on my German!

Yeah, they’re great and funny. I saw them live at the beginning of their career, as I worked as a music journalist whilst I was a student. Free tickets! 🎟 👍🏽

Great early run but what a shame hubby is on the IC again. It must have been lovely being able to run together. Hope its not too long a recovery.

🙏💪 and we will run-walk again.

Sorry to hear about your hubby's injury, can imagine it must be frustrating for both him and you. Do make sure he rests it sufficient and doesn't work it too early risking a long injury.

Just a quick question, you do the Japanese Slow Jogging shuffle, right? Can I ask what your average pace is? I think I go a bit too fast to Slow Jog and am wondering whether I could slow down a tad more. Do you walk in between too (Jeffing) or is it a continuous run?

Thanks, I have a feeling his calf muscles have various muscle scabs that have not healed smoothly and with tight calves and then our age, they are easily overstretched. Physio and sports massage is the next step in his plan of recovery.

I run continuously but really slow. I don’t know about pace but my speed is just under 5km/hour, so I manage the 5k in 57 min, often just above the hour. I was very conscious of my snail pace until I read an article that suggested Japanese slow running advised to be between 3 and 5km/hour. So I’m ok, I think.

It just makes me the slowest runner by far in any race, Parkrun or challenge.

I think this speed can be really hard to run if you are able to run faster, but for my age and my condition, it’s a perfect way to run.

👍🏽

Thanks for the information, speed or pace, all the same. I am just learning to think in pace, so speed is sometimes still easier to understand 😉. I always think I run slow too, but outside I run average 7 km/h (including my Jeffing - on the treadmill I go from 6 to 7 km/h but it feels very heavy). So I am fast in regards to your speed. I tried running very slow once, but it felt heavier. Still want to explore the Slow Jogging though, maybe I can run continuous if I go slower. I just wish to prevent injuries and now with my knees being dodgy... Don't know, this requires further investigation 😉

Yeah, there are some videos which help a bit.

One thing some podcast mentioned is that for healthy knees, if you are running and looking down and see your knees, you are not slow-running perfectly. You shouldn’t

see your knees, as that would mean you are overextending unnecessarily and knees take a bit of beating then.

Good luck. I have found it’s great for longer distances, so I managed to get up to 10k several times (I train up to that distance repeatedly), but 10ks just take me a long time so hydration and fuel is a thing for my 10ks.

in reply to CBDB

I reached my (only so far) 10K Jeffing (4:30 / 0:30) with an average of 7 km/h. But that was also in perfect circumstances. Perfect weather, perfect road, perfect time of the day, perfect feeling body. Perfect circumstances don't exists that often, so I really should try to slow down some more, go more in the direction of Slow Jogging...

Following your runs closely!!

Sorry to hear about your hubby being laid up and you’re now going solo. Perhaps teenage son might join you? 😆. My teenage daughter’s impressing me on her C25K journey. A crazy busy week resulted in a bit of a delayed start to week 4, but she’s back on it 😃.

As for pace CBDB, just keep doing you, it works! 😊🏃‍♀️🧘🏼‍♀️

Yes, I’m impressed by your daughters C25k journey!

Teenage son has discovered Tennis, so from last week he’s switched his running to playing Tennis with dad, and now (due to dad on IC) playing with friends.

Rather than going away this summer, we got a local tennis club membership and its proven to be quite successful.

Tennis is my teenage son’s thing too, big time. My husband plays too but he’s in danger of landing on the IC himself - keeps forgetting his age 🙄

Sorry to hear hubby on IC again 🙄

Your route does look flat, but I’d be worried that I would trip on the little gully running down the centre. 😬🤦🏻‍♀️
