Historic 10K run

This morning I ran my 17th 10K run at Stirling by the castle, the photo is of the Wallace Monument, that commemorates Sir William Wallace, a 13th Century Scottish hero.

Three years ago I climbed up all 246 steps to the top of the monument, that is a workout in its self.

Well done on your 17th 10k and you lucky, lucky man to have such a beautiful place to run! 😊😊😊

AlMorr profile image
AlMorrAmbassadorGraduate10 in reply toFrenc

That was where I ran, run 3 of week 8 of C25K in June 2018, however, that 28 minute run was only around 4K so not nearly as long as today's 10K.

Well done for your 17th 10K run! Wow, what a great photo, too. 👏👏👏👍

I don’t think I could climb 246 steps!

AlMorr profile image
AlMorrAmbassadorGraduate10 in reply toJools2020

Thanks Jools2020, 246 steps is alot but there are several landings up the monument where you can take a short break and, ha, ha, read all about the battles throughout history between 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 Scotland and England 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿, these battles still continue to this day, mainly at rugby and at a few football games. 😊

They do indeed, Al! 😊

Good luck in the football, Al 🤭

AlMorrAmbassadorGraduate10 in reply toHeavyFoot

I am not really a football fan, however, as a Scot I wish England a good Euro final on Sunday evening, if they win there won't be any other news on Monday and perhaps for the rest of next week. 😊

Well done on your 17th 10K Al 👍And love the picture 😬

After last Wednesdays 10 miles I ran 10K today, it did feel a bit shorter, I am glad that you like that photograph. 😊

Well done! Around the Castle isn’t exactly flat either and walking up to the monument is quite a workout.

AlMorr profile image
AlMorrAmbassadorGraduate10 in reply toSandie1961

I ran along beside the River Forth, mainly flat but there were a few short hills as well, I could see Stirling Castle as well as the Wallace Monument, yes walking up the hill to the bottom of the monument 3 years ago and then climbing all those steps was quite a workout.

GrannyhugsGraduate10

Congratulations on your 17th 10k. Great area to run in, nice choice of hills and flat. Happy running 🤗

AlMorr profile image
AlMorrAmbassadorGraduate10 in reply toGrannyhugs

Thanks Grannyhugs regarding my 17th 10K, I ran by the side of the Forth so there weren't too many hills, lovely morning for a run, part of that run was where I ran, run 3 of week 8 of C25K in June 2018.

Well done for your 17th 10k - and what a lovely place to do it!246 steps - wow!

AlMorr profile image
AlMorrAmbassadorGraduate10 in reply toBirdlady64

Thanks Birdlady64 regarding my 17th 10K, 246 steps is a workout in itself, just as well it was 3 years ago, I don't think that I could climb up all those steps today after running 10K., I am not an elite athlete.

What am amazing 17th 10K run AlMorr 🤗Glasgow is my hometown, although I live in England now, my daughter and I visited the Wallace Monument a couple of years ago with the intention of climbing to the top, but sadly it was closed for works..but it's on my to do list 👍🤞

AlMorr profile image
AlMorrAmbassadorGraduate10 in reply tosparky66

Thanks sparky66, there was a mini bus at the bottom of the hill, I paid at the office and was told to wait for the bus which would arrive in around 15 minutes, but I chose to walk up the hill to the monument, showed my ticked to the man at the entrance of the monument and then started climbing up all those steps, there are various landings where you can rest and read all about the history of Scotland.

AlMorr profile image
AlMorrAmbassadorGraduate10 in reply tosparky66

Update sparky66, from the top of the Wallace Monument you can see in the foreground The University of Stirling, they have a parkrun which I ran on Saturday 25th September, when I was running I could see the monument much closer than the above photo, I thought to myself, 'I climbed up that monument 3 years ago, it looks so high'

Doris8 profile image
Doris8Graduate10

Lovely run around the Castle AlMorr great view. It’s a big climb to the castle as well and Wallace monument is something else as well. It’s a great castle to have a look around as well. Welldone 👏👏🤗

AlMorr profile image
AlMorrAmbassadorGraduate10 in reply toDoris8

It was near Stirling Castle, I could see both the castle and that monument, the time I was in Stirling Castle was a very long time ago, however, I climbed the Wallace Monument from the very bottom of the hill 3 years ago despite the fact I could have got a bus up the hill, then climbed up those 246 steps to the top, quite a workout.

Doris8 profile image
Doris8Graduate10 in reply toAlMorr

But a great view and worth it😊

AlMorr profile image
AlMorrAmbassadorGraduate10 in reply toDoris8

PS, I do have a photograph somewhere on my Smartphone which I took from the top of the monument 3 years ago, I'll look for it and post it here if I find it.

Thanks Beatlesforever, I enjoyed my 17th 10K run this morning, I am glad that you like my photo, by the way Beatlesforever I now have Spotify Premium and have hours and hours of ad free Beatles 🎶 music which I can download and listen to when I am outside walking 🚶 or 🏃🏾 running.

Excellent, Spotify premium's really worth it 🎶🎧 I always download my playlists to listen to them out and about too 👍

I like most types of music except Death Metal and Rap, if I wish to listen to a full work of Classical Music and don't have it on CD I can now can listen to it on Spotify.

AlMorr profile image
AlMorrAmbassadorGraduate10 in reply togrumpyoldgirl

Thanks grumpyoldgirl, I have not set any records on running but according to my running diary I have ran 17 official Parkruns, 56 (not) parkruns, 17/10Ks, a few 8K, 11K,12K, 14K and 2/10 mile runs since I graduated from C25K on the 18th June 2018, I did decide last week after running my second 10 miles run that from now on 10K will be my longest distance, 3K, 5K,8K and 10K runs are the distance I love running. 😊 🏃🏾

grumpyoldgirl profile image
grumpyoldgirl in reply toAlMorr

It's so important to enjoy it, so that's a good decision 👍

AlMorr profile image
AlMorrAmbassadorGraduate10 in reply togrumpyoldgirl

👍 🏃🏾

AlMorr profile image
AlMorrAmbassadorGraduate10 in reply toAlMorr

PS grumpyoldgirl, I was speaking to one of the members of my Thursday morning walking group, she used to run and has ran 40/10K's, however, she told me that on a few occasions when running at an event 10K such as the Great Scottish 10K many "runners" who have not trained for the event at all tend to stop running and walk slowly and keep back runners who have trained for the event which could affect their time if they were after a PB

An example of that was several years ago when there were about 60,000 entries for the Great North Run, however, around as many as 20,000 did not start and many opted out before even completing the first 5k of that run, I think this happens a lot on those event runs.

grumpyoldgirl profile image
grumpyoldgirl in reply toAlMorr

Wow! You'd think they'd have the sense to start at the back! 😬

I'd much rather thw 10K's to climbing those steps, something you'd only do the once?! Beautiful running location...do you avoid the midges?

AlMorr profile image
AlMorrAmbassadorGraduate10 in reply toMormor1

Indeed Mormo1, I didn't come across any midges yesterday during my run, the evening is the worst time for midges.

Dups profile image
DupsGraduate10

Wonderful photo. Congratulations on your 17th 10k. You are relentless in your running. I am always inspired when I read your posts

AlMorr profile image
AlMorrAmbassadorGraduate10 in reply toDups

Thank you Dups, yes I like running but after my second 10 mile run last week I decided that I won't run any longer than 10K from now on, same with cycling, I had a 3 and a half-hour bike ride a few weeks ago and came home knackered, so from now on, like running 2 hours on the bike will be my longest bike ride.

Update I have now ran 5/10 mile runs

Well done Al, another 10k completed. I met some your Scottish heroes( football fans) on the train to London on the day of the recent England/Scotland game. We were serenaded with football songs throughout the journey, including "Stand up if you hate England" which left only Mrs BC and me sitting in the carriage, plus two Scots lads who chose to be polite!! All done in fun and there were fist bumps and "enjoy your day" when they left the train; sums up the relationship really.🙂

AlMorr profile image
AlMorrAmbassadorGraduate10 in reply toBeachcomber66

Thanks BC66, I keep clear of football fans, I treat them all as if they have the plague, apart from football fans, (it's the football fans that is causing Covid 19 to increase again) we Scots do NOT hate the English, my friend in the Thursday morning walking group is from Shropshire, I am running with him doing C25K, fortunately, like me, he is not a football fan.

Beachcomber66 profile image
Beachcomber66Graduate10 in reply toAlMorr

🙂 I didn’t feel hated in the slightest. My experience of being in Scotland has always been really positive; lovely place and lovely people.

Fantastic run! We have stayed in this area a couple of times on holiday and love it. I've been to the top of the Wallace Monument too. Loved the view but was quite panicky on the stairs! Thank you for your inspiring posts.

AlMorr profile image
AlMorrAmbassadorGraduate10 in reply toRowers

Thanks, you have to be careful especially coming back down the stairs, it's quite narrow and steep, I did take a photo at the top but realised that the photo is on my old Smartphone.

How beautiful! It must make the 10km all the more enjoyable to have such a view. Yes I bet those steps can be a good work out... I did something similar Tuesday but didn't even have the energy to count the steps :-)

It is very nice running or walking when the view is as beautiful as the one you see in the picture I took, I didn't count the steps, it was the guide that I read saying there were all those steps. 😊 👍

AlMorr profile image
AlMorrAmbassadorGraduate10 in reply toRunningwithhoney

It is RWH, even better from the top of the monument. When the visibility is excellent like on the day 3 years ago when I went to the top, I could see looking one direction almost back to where I live 15 miles away, looking the other direction I could see the Scottish Highlands with the famous Ben Lomond in the distance.
