HHM Training - Week 3 Day 1

Started the week off with a 15 minute recovery run as per usual on this programme. It was good to have a rest day yesterday to give my aching knees a rest. However, when I walked down the stairs this morning I felt like the old man that I nearly am. My knees were very sore. I got the massage gun and put it on a low setting before my run. My knees always feel fine when I’m running it’s usually the day after that I feel the effects. I’m still have trouble believing that I’m going to be able to run this HM. Some of it is because I know that I struggle more running outside and at the moment I’m doing all of my training indoors. I’m going to attempt the 8K run next week outdoors if my knees are up to it. Also, I have some days where my lungs are dodgier than others. My doctors are currently trying me on a twice daily dose of omeprazole as they say taking it at night may relieve some wheezing as they think it could be stomach acid causing wheezing and coughing in the morning. I don’t buy it but I’ve obediently started taking it at night too. My stomach is slowly going down but I did go out to dinner at Bodeans last night which wasn’t on my plan. Nawty nawty.

Your knees are clearly giving you some grief. Do you know what’s causing them to ache?

No I don’t - at first I thought it was the tendons in my left knee as it was hurting around the kneecap but as well as that it also hurts around the bottom part of the knee which could also be tendons. I don’t think it’s anything serious (he prays) because they don’t hurt all the time. Usually first thing in the morning or walking downstairs. I’m hoping it’s just my knees adjusting to the training and nothing serious. That said, I think I’ll give football a miss on Sunday as that might be aggravating them too.

You just need to make sure they don’t feel worse. Upping your distance will put more pressure on all the muscles and joints so it’s only sensible to try and figure out what’s causing the pain.

I assume you don’t need new shoes?

No I’ve been running in new Nike’s. I bought my previous trainers from Runners Need and though they may be causing it so I switched to the new ones.

Do you use a foam roller? Tight muscles can cause aches in knees especially in the quads.

No, I’ll get one though.
