I used to cycle- hurt my knee, used to swim but am only comfortable with breast stroke and it hurts my back. A few years ago I discovered I could run. It was my first ever gym session with a trainer. When I got on the running machine, I got a pretty instant endorphin hit. Apparently it’s weird that I can run and not swim, but that’s what I did. Managed a half marathon. Twice. Then my back took a turn for the worse. Some changes at work made me want to leave, I now hate my job. My back got so bad I saw a doctor - I could hardly walk without pain. He told me I was depressed. 3 months of CBT followed plus physio. I found the C25k app as I needed a structured return to running, and have now completed it. I have been repeating runs, but need to progress. I am running less frequently and when I run I sometimes want stop so bad. These negative thoughts made me redo a week 6 run as it was easier. I have not run today so that’s just one run this week. I feel myself slipping into a bad place ...

If you post all your runs here we will encourage you and cheer you on and one run this week is way better than none

I'm with WillowandSola on the one run being way better than none.

I think the ideal for health benefits is to be running 5k three times a week but I suggest it's best to keep to what you can do comfortably.

These folk are the kindest group I’ve ever come across, good luck on your journey, I do hope you find solace and can enjoy the runs you accomplish.

I'm glad you came here, as you will find loads of support. It can be hard to get motivated but you will find that you feel better after a run. You say that when you run you sometimes want to stop. Have you tried 'jeffing'? I'm not a big fan generally, but sometimes, when a run feels like a chore, I'll do it and it does help. Strangely it doesn't seem to affect my time too badly either, but maybe that's because I run so slowly! Keep lacing up and I hope you find your Mojo soon

Thanks for this. No idea what Jeffing is?

Run, walk, run like you did in C25K. Named after the guy who developed it. I really lost my mojo about a year ago and it helped take the (self-inflicted) pressure off

Thanks so much. Just looked up Jeffing and see there is an app - focused on running a half marathon. I ran today. No idea how my mood can vary so much, but this morning I ran 7k. Your support and that of others on here helped me enormously. And the music wasn't bad either - started with Bach, went on to Eminem, then Van Morrison, finishing with Ali in the Jungle telling me everyone gets knocked down and asking how quick was I going to get up.

Try out the Audiofuel music. They are excellent. There are several available on the NHS site, and on Spotify as well. If you want to try them out, I can post the links.
