In my quest to slow my pace I think I have just developed a new crush.... ๐Ÿฅฐ

โ€ข32 Replies

I know, at my age it's silly to start talking about crushes, but I think I've just experienced my first crush since school.....

I'll own up and confess all to Mr D-d later today when he gets back from volunteering at our local vaccination centre, but for now I just want to keep it to myself..... , and everyone here obviously!

It all started with my quest to slow down my pace and rediscover my inner snail, ready for stretching out into those longer runs that I so want to reclaim. My shorter runs have been run unintentionally at quite a brisk pace for me, some of them sub 7 minutes/km and I have found slowing down really hard.

I have been running without music for the past few months, as I didn't like feeling cocooned by headphones and not fully aware of my surroundings, especially after being taken by surprise by a very big dog on one run ๐Ÿ˜ฑ. Because I run on the heathland and woodland trails near my home I love to hear all the birds, so I do like running without music. However sometimes it is nice to listen to a podcast or a playlist of songs for walks, as the slower tempo encourages me to slow down my pace.

For a long time I have also wanted to try Nike Run Club, so often mentioned on here, but my ancient iPhone wouldn't run the app. When it finally started to give up the ghost last month, I updated to a newer refurbished iPhone and yesterday I downloaded the NRC app.

This week I treated myself to some Aftershockz headphones. They arrived yesterday and what a revelation they are. It's like taking the radio outdoors in the garden with you, but only you can hear it plus all the birdsong too. I love them, plus there's none of that muffled buzziness in the ears afterwards that I was getting with in-ear buds.

I linked the NRC app to Spotify and my Garmin watch (I really do not recognise myself in that sentence - I thought I was technophobic!) , chose "First Run" from the guided runs list and set off this morning for my 5 min warm up walk. I pressed play on the run, and that's when it happened...... โ˜บ๏ธโค๏ธ

Coach Cory entered my life..... ๐Ÿฅฐ His straight talking makes him my kind of a guy. The fact that I had Spotify's "Feelin' Good" playlist running as well in the background probably factors. He guided me through the run, ensuring I ran slowly and his reminders kept my pace down. This was one of the most enjoyable runs I've had in ages. When Coach Cory gave the instruction to take a photo of myself to celebrate the end of my run, I did, but only for Coach Cory, you don't want to see my wind-swept little beetroot face grinning from ear to ear.

Fabulous450 has her wonderful Sgt Mjr Garmin, I have my Coach Cory. I fully expect he is easing me in gently, as he sounds like he can do the tough talking when needed, but that's fine by me, I prefer to know where I stand.

Much as I would love to keep him to myself, I know it's good to share, so if like me you were wondering what the NRC app was all about, based on my first run alone I can recommend it. I am really looking forward to "The Next Run" and finding out what Coach Cory has lined up for me.

A big thank you to everyone on here who posts their NRC runs. I had been reading them with interest, now I finally know what it's all about!

Happy running everyone ๐Ÿฅฐ๐Ÿƒโ€โ™€๏ธ๐Ÿƒโ€โ™‚๏ธ

Great post ๐Ÿ˜And so pleased you enjoyed your first NRC run ๐Ÿ‘

I'm sure you will enjoy many of them ๐Ÿ˜

in reply to Instructor57

Thank you - I am looking forward to exploring more of the NRC guided runs. I think I have the "next Run" to do next, not sure after that. I guess I can just pick and choose?

Yes, pick and choose , if you are into Mindfulness there are some good ones with Andy P from 'Headspace' ๐Ÿ˜

in reply to Instructor57

Mindfulness, definitely! Have I read some of your references to the mindful runs in your posts?

Ha!!! you are only a week behind me! isnโ€™t he amazing? I did a 20 minute run with NRC everyday for 5 days last week because I just wanted to go again and again ๐Ÿ˜‚

in reply to SueAppleRun

Ha-ha!๐Ÿ˜†I know what you mean! There is definitely a feel good factor about that "First Run". I loved it! Not sure I can quite go 5 days on the trot though - well done you! โญ

With Willow feeling unwell with a cold I just popped out the door for a little run thinking I could turn round and come back if i didnโ€™t want to run far, once the worst of the colds are over we are going to do the first run together

Aw my phone is too old for the NRC app ๐Ÿ˜ฅ it sounds fun

in reply to Joggingonthewildside

It is! My old iPhone wouldnโ€™t run the app either so I have been hankering after it for ages. ๐Ÿ˜€

Haha ๐Ÿ˜‚ this made me giggle ๐ŸคญIt sound like you had a really enjoyable great run today.

I'm interested in what you say about your aftershokz head phones I've dithered about getting some several times. I hate earbuds, they always fall out and I dislike the muffling of the really world. But would they work with my glasses, some people say yes but it's quite a bit of ยฃยฃ if they don't ๐Ÿ™„

Look forward to hearing how you and your new crush get on ๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜‚

in reply to dijep

I wore the aftershockz yesterday while gardening to get used to them. I wear contact lenses and glasses and wore the Aftershockz comfortably with my sunglasses all afternoon. I know what you mean about the price but hunt for a deal. Mine are the aeropex ones, currently reduced on the runnersneed website to the price Iโ€™d saved for the less expensive ones, so that was a great bonus and they arrived next day. The sound quality is great too and they were really comfortable during my run. I have a little head but they gripped and didnโ€™t bounce or feel loose once. Iโ€™m really glad I bought them and that I found the aeropex on a genuine deal.

I've got a small head as well dijep so I got the kid's ones and they fit perfectly. I put them on above my ponytail and they fit over glasses no bother. Absolutely worth the money! No wires and not feeling like you are in a vaccuum.

Oh now you and Fionamags are both tempting me after all they may help cheer up my stay on the IC. ๐Ÿ˜ŠBut size wise you both say you've got small heads (me too) but Fionamags has childs size are yours adult size Delly-dot?

I would listen to more stuff if I could get something that works better than earbuds..... Now who am I trying to convince? ๐Ÿ˜‚

in reply to dijep

Mine are the standard adult size and I do have a tiny head, but the Aeropex are the lightest headphones and I soon forgot they were there. The smaller size are offered in the Trekz Titanium.

Titanium are the ones I've got - in bright pink ๐Ÿ˜‰. Got them in an online sale but don't remember where.

I think thatโ€™s a crush Mr D wonโ€™t mind! I really enjoy the NRC - I love how it takes my mind off the struggly parts of runs. And what a lovely run you had, sounds brilliant. ๐Ÿ˜Š๐Ÿƒโ€โ™€๏ธ๐Ÿ˜Š๐Ÿƒโ€โ™€๏ธ๐Ÿ˜Š

Thank you Frenc. I loved this guided run. Iโ€™m really looking forward to trying out some of the others.

๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚ Nothing like a โ€˜new crushโ€™ and โ€˜what happens on the run, stays in the runโ€™ ๐Ÿ˜‰๐Ÿ˜‚Iโ€™m a Coach Bennett girl myself but have to admit Iโ€™ve been neglecting him for some podcasts recently , must make amends ๐Ÿ˜†

Iโ€™m sure youโ€™ll enjoy NRC so many to choose from , I really like โ€˜Donโ€™t Wanna Run โ€˜ with CB , I find myself answering him and nodding in agreement for the whole run ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚

I do rather envy your Aftershockz โ€˜ like having the radio in the gardenโ€™ just sold them for me .

Good luck with slowing down ๐Ÿ‘Œ Iโ€™m trying similar , although not as fast as you and I havenโ€™t done 10k yet, I know I wonโ€™t unless I get an easy pace worked out ๐Ÿคท๐Ÿผโ€โ™€๏ธ๐Ÿƒ๐Ÿปโ€โ™€๏ธ

Happy Running

in reply to RacingintheStreet

Hi. I have heard a lot of good things about Coach Bennett. Does he host some of the guided runs or do I have to select him from somewhere? Thanks for the "Don't Wanna Run" recommendation ๐Ÿ˜Š.

As for you answering Coach Bennett on your runs, I was chatting away to Coach Cory. I'm glad no-one was around to hear!

Oh thank you Allbarron, I will look after Coach Cory for you until you are back out there. How's your knee? When do you hope to get the go-ahead to start again?

Well done. If you like Coach Cory, you'll be head over heels for Coach Bennett ๐Ÿ˜

You can do the NRC runs any way you want, I know it says first run, next run etc but it's not set in stone. I tend to pick out a time that I want to run for and go from there. x

in reply to

Thank you! Where do I find Coach Bennett? Does he host some of the other runs or do I need to select him from somewhere in settings?

in reply to

He does some of the other runs and he is fun. He gives you somethings to think about while you run.

Great, thank you ๐Ÿ˜Š
