Reading about others who have entered in virtual races such as LEJOG and such, I was curious and looked it up a bit more. I passed the Conqueror site before, but found the price rather much for just a medal. Until I checked it out again this morning and compared it to my yarn buys for my crochet hobby and my e-books. It actually sounds very interesting! And seen you enter for a longer period of time like 10 weeks or more, the price is actually not that much. So I took the leap and entered.
I have entered myself into the Mount Kilimanjaro race for 97 kilometres (60 miles). First I wanted to do the Channel between England and France of 33 kilometres, but then I saw the Kilimanjaro and I found it suitable for me. I work in a steel trading company and I work on East Africa (Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Rwanda, Mozambique, Zambia, etc.). So what better for me that a 'race' in Tanzania? I'm sure I'll learn new things about this country!
I think I might be able to reach 97 kilometres in 8 to 9 weeks (I only run 30 minutes - 3,... km on weekdays), but just to be sure I chose 10 weeks. You never know what life throws in your face. The Conqueror app is linked to my Garmin account / watch, so tomorrow I will be doing my first run in Tanzania :-).
So thank you all for posting about your virtual races and your bling, it caused me to slink down the rabbit hole myself!
Sounds fantastic. Wishing you all the best on your run - or is it a climb?
Have you thought about joining is on the Cape of Good Hope Ultra relay? We will be travelling through many of those same places. There is lots of good company & no cost (but no medal either I'm afraid)
A number of people are running multiple challenges at the same time. You would just have to log your distances in several places. I don't think there is anything dishonest about it, especially if one is a group run and the other a solo challenge.
Well done for signing up. I started Grand Canyon but was almost immediately sidelined on the IC. The great thing about it is you can change your goal time (which I did) plus they plant trees for each milestone - can’t remember the % complete tree planting details but it was on the website. How lovely to find out more about countries you are already sort of familiar with ...but in a different way. Hope you have a safe and happy running experience
Every 20% I think, that is a very nice extra. Always good to help nature. And yes, never been in Tanzania myself and actually know hardly anything about the country. So always glad to learn more ☺
