We are VERY HAPPY TO BE :
Announcing the Cape of Good Hope Ultra Relay (aka The Great Group Run)!!
Originally Irish-John βhad the dreamβ - a relay race along the βlongest walkable road in the worldβ from Russia all the way to Cape Town in South Africa (see the link below for more details of the original route).
After some background work, we can now announce the latest HU Challenge!!! And itβs a big one! The ULTIMATE road run. Over 22,000km!!!
Something to make us feel a little more connected and add a bit of extra fun to our weekly runs. This challenge will run for as long as it takes us ....
HOW WILL IT WORK?
β The challenge will be hosted by Irish-John, Charlies1, and Runaroundsue
SAVE this post to get email updates, and follow the three Team members to receive an email notification whenever they write a new challenge post! You can always unfollow later π (Check in your settings to make sure you have these email alerts enabled)
β The challenge will run from Monday 1st March, for as long as it takes, with regular posts here on Bridge
β This will be a walk/run challenge - all walks and runs qualify (whoβs going to run 22,000km without the odd walk ???)
β Charlies1 has kindly set up a dedicated website for this challenge where you can find out about our route. Take a look here
It already has some information on the 1st leg of the route (Anadyr to the Kazakhstan border, through Russia), and on some of the places we will visit along the way
β Once we start the race (1st March), you will be able to enter the date and distance covered for each of your own runs via the same website (you will receive details on exactly how to do this once you are signed up)
β You will be able to see where you have run on a map and the website will track our overall progress along the route.
β You will be identified by your HU member name and wonβt need to disclose any further information besides date and distance
β We will write a weekly HU post on Bridge to update on highlights of the week, discuss progress and maybe even take guesses on how long we think it will take to reach the finish line!!!
ARE YOU UP FOR THIS CHALLENGE?
β Will you help us reach the Cape of Good Hope in good time? Let us know in the comments if you want to take part, then we can enter you into the team!!!
β Any questions? Ask away below
We hope youβll join us and have FUN!!!
The Great Group Run Team

Original route inspiration for this challenge:
Here's one article about it (there are many, and the idea originally surfaced on a Reddit thread):
Yes please, count me in. Excited!!! Thanks for all you guys have done to make it possible. Team support is essential - if I run approx 25km per week it would take me just under 17 years (880 weeks) to complete this! ππ€£ bring it on! ππ
Yeah! It's happeningπββοΈπββοΈπββοΈπββοΈπββοΈπββοΈπYes please John, Charlies1 and RunaroundSue I would like to join the Great Group Run Team. Thank you for all your time and efforts organising this for us, it will be great fun!
I have followed this post and look forward to starting on 1st March....
Hi I-J, would love to join you all on this journey. Iβm a fairly new runner nearly at 10k. Hopefully my smallish contribution will help. Very excited to be part of it.π
Please include me on the challenge it sounds interesting-I want to increase the amount I run, at present I am only running once or twice a week 5k and this sounds a great incentive.
Definitely count me in. Thank you all for the hard work already carried out setting this up and the work to come , much appreciated. Happy running and walking everyone π€
Count me in please! Iβm on the IC at the moment but hope to be trotting again by 1 March, although at OGR speed I wonβt be adding huge numbers of Km! But I can walk so will have a contribution! Itβll be cold in Magadan at the start though so the right gear will be essential folks!
Can I join your team please, can I, can I, pretty please ?I know I donβt go as far as others but hope to make regular contributions to the team effort ππββοΈπ Thanks to all the organisers for making this possible πβ€οΈπ
Iβm in! I donβt do too many miles, im hoping to hit my first 10k run next week, but it all adds up and it will be nice to be part of something bigger π
Iβd like to be in... I have had a longish period away from running and some illness, but Iβm keen to get back and have re-started. Iβm nowhere near being bridge to 10k material just now but hope to be fairly soon so this will be a great challenge to keep me motivated. Thank you for your work in setting it up π
Brilliant! The beauty of this challenge is that there's no personal pressure but the chance to be part of a motivating team. Win, win I reckon. Let's have some fun!!!
I'd love to join in please π currently resting a hip niggle but sure I'll be 'up and running ' by 1st March. Looking forward to some virtual travelling with many like minded companions this year after all ππββοΈπ
Excellent. Look after the hip and don't rush it. Don't forget you can always count walks if you aren't sure if you are run ready. The niggle will go, and the runs will wait π
Hi, yes Iβd love to join the effort to do this challenge! Please count me inπ Iβm running LEJOG, Route 66 and training for my HUHM at the end of March, so I should have a few km to contribute!πββοΈπ
I won't add many miles but I would love to join you all on this adventure. A great incentive to get off the couch and learn a lot on the way. Thanks for your hard work in organising. π
This sounds brilliant! I'd love to join in if I can please. Thank you to you all for organising this. It'll certainly give everyone a boost. I tend to run the same route so it'll also give me some inspiration too of what I would be seeing along the virtual route instead. Great idea! π
Please can I join. Not running long distance but may managing 10 k per week when hips allow but walking well so could add those to total. Let me know what I have to do π anything to keep the gremlins at bay. π€£π€£
Could I join please? A relative newbie to running, completed C25K in September. The furthest I have so far ventured is 13km so my contribution may not be great, but every little counts π
Monday is just the first day Floss Every day after that will also count so any day you run or walk eill be counted towards the total distance :)Heck, with all I have going on tomorrow I'm not too sure I will be able to get a run in
Hi there.Am I too late to join? I saw this a while ago but like everything else in my life I only get organised at the last minute. I'll be the one dashing towards the start at the last minute! Very exciting.A lovely idea .
I've only just seen this - what a great challenge. Can I join in even though it's already started? I need some incentive to kick me out of bed and go for a run!
Itβs going to be very lonely if you are all in Russia and Iβm here βΉοΈ
Please can I join the party Irish-John? If Iβm trying to increase my distance it might help in some small way . πββοΈπββοΈπββοΈπββοΈπββοΈπββοΈπββοΈπββοΈ
Hello !!! I really reallly reallly really want to join in !! Have seen a few posts about COGH in the forum and had no idea what it was all about ! (Must have missed this original post !). I soooo want to run through the Russia bit - and beyond ! Itβs a year to the day since I returned from Georgia - i place I visit a lot for my work and I see the route goes through there and through north and South Ossetia . Can I join in please ? FOMO and need for motivation. Pretty please ?!!! π€ΈββοΈπ
fear of missing out !!! Though it sounds more like drain cleaner than beer (maybe closer to Russian beer π€£). Ouch - no some Russian beer is actually quite good. Hurrah !!
HiHaven't visited the HU site for several weeks - been slowly working on LEJOG6 and am now only 20 miles from the goal so was looking around for a new challenge.... and have just found all the buzz about COGH.
Is it possible to join at this late stage?? I have March runs recorded on Garmin which I could add or else could I start as of 1st April?
