Oh bugger...

Well, as I suspected my left hip now needs to be replaced. I'm at the bottom of a 2 year waiting list so I'm just going to keep running for as long as possible. The surgeon is OK with that, as long as there's no lateral movement (so no Zumba - as if 😆😆!). My first question was "can I still run afterwards? ", & he seems to think it'll be OK, but maybe a bit clunky. I can live with that I think. Need some hand holding though 🤕.

That’s rotten. Here’s hoping that, as Covid cases reduce, the backlog of other surgery can be reduced.

Sorry to hear this and understandably waiting lists are very long at the moment. The good news is you’ve had the ok to keep running, the fitter and more mobile you are going into the op the faster and easier the recovery will be. Don’t go for any heroics. Aim to just head out and enjoy these runs without risking addiction injury. My father had a hip replacement at about 85 a few years ago and within 3 weeks he did a 3 mile long Christmas walk with us, at 90 he’s still very active - caught him clearing snow from neighbours drive this morning. you can do this.Happy running 🤗

Thanks! I had my right one resurfaced in 2007 & its been brilliant, but they don't offer resurfacing to women any more so this will be a total replacement on the left side - ceramic, so should be fairly hard-wearing & low maintenance (hopefully). The way it's been feeling I can't say I'm surprised, but still - the thought of going through it again doesn't fill me with joy. Will be worth it though, I know.

Big hugs to you!!!! It does sound pretty positive, other than that 2 year wait. Keep your runs slow, steady, and scenic as Grannyhugs says, and keep us posted!! I have a neighbour who has been doing amazingly after a hip replacement - seeing how she rushes about everywhere you'd never suspect she'd had, or ever needed the op! I think that keeping up with your fitness in any way you can will pay you huge dividends after your operation.

The good thing is you can still run. Although the prospect may sound daunting it'll improve your quality of life 'in the long run' - pardon the pun! I used to curl with an 80 year old lady who had her hip replacement and came back to curl afterwards. As long as you're fit, healthy and positive you'll be fine. The wait is a bummer but enjoy your running while you wait! 😉

I know, it's odd but running is actually easier than walking at the moment, certainly when going uphill! Thanks for cheering me up 😃

Any time! I'm glad it had the desired effect! 😉

Sorry to hear about the length of wait for your op PandaCory, let’s hope it doesn’t come to that. But in the meantime enjoy the runs that you can do and look forward to the pain free runs in the future!

Thanks - I've just this minute signed up for the Virtual Vitality London 10k for 2021, hopefully it'll keep me motivated (& mobile)!

Sorry to hear about your hip problems, how long has the left one been hurting you? I've had a hip pain for a few weeks now, have decided to rest for a week, when i was running, it would be ok, just stiffens up later, and when i've been sat about. 🤷‍♂️

Thanks! I had the right one done in 2007 & it's still good. The left one didn't look too good then, so I'm surprised it's lasted so long, honestly. It didn't really start to bother me until the new year, though. It can get worse when you're sitting as you say, so I'm determined to keep moving as much as I can.

I hope you'll still be able to enjoy your runs, it must be very frustrating for you, i've been quite lucky, with no major injuries, up to now, hoping a rest will do the trick!

I like to say I admire your attitude, a lot would give up with a bad hip, so well done and we’re all here for a helping hand if needed
