Happy New Year everyone, mine started with flashes like lightening, but just in my left eye. 2 trips to the hospital and diagnosis is PVD and iritis in the same eye at the same time. No retinal detachment, so looks like I can get on with my life again mid Jan when I can lift again. I’m allowed to run, but feeling too under the weather currently and it’s very icy round here.
I’ll be back.... 🤨

So sorry to hear that Baddie, but great that it’s not a detached retina which is always the fear. Good idea to give running a break for a while and until conditions improve . We don’t want you sliding into the canal.
Not pleasant Baddie - I've had posterior vitreous detachment in both eyes (at different times). Worrying at the time but no lasting effects - although you do notice more floaters in the eye to start with.
Did you get a tiny, bright yellow floater with a thick black outline a few days beforehand? I spent ages watching it float around, then the next day it was completely spherical, with a black dot in the middle. Very odd.
Oh no! Hope your eyes recover. Don’t know much about pvd and how it heals, so hope a speedy recovery for you and sending you my get well wishes. Take good care of your eyes!
Hope you are on the mend soon, sounds pretty frightening. We will all be waiting to do some virtual runs with you once you are right🤞we might to do it for real. Take care of yourself.
I am alright thanks. New year resolution, more positive attitude. I am doing LEJOG5. Currently in the borders of Scotland onward and up.I had really hoped to do the last few miles for real , pipe dream I fear.
Oh sorry to hear about your eye. Issues like this can be a bit scary and it's cold and dark. Hopefully you will feel less under the weather soon and run again. 🤗
Much sympathy. I had the exact same thing start about a week ago! I'd been for a run and when I came home got flashes whenever I moved my eye fast. For two days it was pretty bad, but now I only notice it at night in the dark. I'm assuming it's PVD and as it seems to be settling I'm just hoping for a normal outcome, but I know just how grumpy the worry makes you feel. I think it can take a long while to settle, but don't let it get worse without seeking help again. Fingers crossed it settles very soon.
Have you been checked? You need an ophthalmologist to check it’s just PVD and the retina is not involved. Opticians (or maybe just Specsavers, not sure) are now doing a triage role for the NHS so you can access care via an emergency appointment with them. They’ll send you on if necessary to get checked.
Thanks, I know you're right there, but Covid has me hesitating.About five years ago my OH started with PVD. Over the next few months - over a year in fact, he had several surgeries. He was the 1 in 10 where PVD doesn't progress normally; then he was the 1 in? that had an issue from the first op; then the 1 in? who had an issue from the next op ... and so it went on. His retina did tear but was saved by the surgeries, but other issues resulting from the surgeries mean his vision is now far from great. He was ultra unlucky unfortunately. My symptoms seem to be well within the 'normal' boundaries at the moment so I haven't been to get checked. If it weren't for Covid I absolutely wouldn't have hesitated to go to the optician, but under the current circumstances I'm waiting and watching carefully. Only time will tell whether that's a mistake!!! Any sign of deterioration though and I will be banging on their doors.
You won't see me for dust 😊. I had a few floaters but they have virtually disappeared 🤞. Will keep my fingers crossed for yours to get back to normal quickly too.
Normal for me is lots anyway coz I get regular iritis (inflammation of the iris). All very tedious. I’ve got a pirate patch in my jewellery box, ready for when I’m even older and even more decrepit!
Oh my! Visual disturbances are extremely worrying.
I get visual auras very very occasionally, about once every 3-4 years. My GP described them as silent migraines. It starts as a zig-zag disturbance at the centre of vision which then gradually spreads outwards to the peripheral vision and then disperses. I've not had one for a couple of years.
But that's not what's stopping me running at the moment...
I’ve had those. The first time was in a maths class as a kid, then one when I was walking down the street with a friend. I said ‘look at that persons face’ because before the zigzags arrived it was just bending lines, and it made a perfectly normal person’s face look injured. She said ‘why, they look normal?’ I find the vision migraine goes away if I sit in the dark.
At one 'happy' stage in my life I was getting them every week, was on permanent meds and gave up alcohol altogether 🙄. This current level is totally bearable in comparison. I sympathise massively with anyone who suffers regularly though.
Such good news, really!! Take it slow and no need to run on ice!! Yikes. Never for me! Im so relieved that this is just a short rest/recovery for tou!!
Take it easy Baddie ' you'll be back in no time - and the weather might be kinder by the time you're feeling more like it. It's such a lovely feeling when you've been feeling rubbish then recover and have a good run. Something to look forward to.
I sympathise. I’m just getting over uveitis as well! I really didn’t want to go to hospital with it but I’ve had it before and know it needs to be seen by an eye doctor because of the risk of retinal detachment. Opticians can diagnose it, but not prescribe medication. I went through the telephone NHS111 and spoke to a doctor who gave me an appointment at A&E. I was seen within 5 minutes. At least this time they didn’t give me the pupil dilating drops which plays havoc with my vision!
I’ve had PVD and the flashes continued for about 3 weeks, although they were improving all the time. The brain compensates for most of the floaters. Hope yours improves soon!
Thanks for your first hand report. Very comforting to hear from you. My Grandma always said it’s a thing that appears around Xmas. Hope you’re fully recovered and stay well.
Oh Baddie, that's rough, and quite scary. I got it 2 years ago. I still get occasional flashes, but I've adjusted to the grey spots (they drove me crazy at first). In my case it didn't help that the GP insisted on giving me migraine meds to try for a couple of days just in case before referring me on, by which time I was beside myself with worry😕)I'm fine now, but like you, I'll be straight down A&E at the first sign of the Curtain of Doom!
Oops, your GP wasn’t on the ball! Glad you’ve learnt to cope. I’ll be better once the half attached grey fuzz stops drifting across the focal point of my vision, then pinging back like it’s on elastic 😜
