On Thursday headed out for a 5k. Beautiful morning and in the right frame of mind 😃. 1k in and I seemed all over the place, changed to a guided run, 2k in and I was irritated by the voice in my ear 👂. Walked a bit as puffed, odd I thought as my speed was nearer 8mins per k. Turned music back on and after 1.5 k of misery I gave up.
Decided needed to go this morning but was worried I couldn’t do it after the disaster of a few days ago. Chance of rain 🌧 100% but it wasn’t raining so off I went. Seemed to be going fine for the first 4K and then turned direction and running in to wind. 6k in and the downpour happened, and it never stopped. Gave up worrying about avoiding the puddles. I couldn’t get any wetter 🙁.
Managed 10k in just over 1:08.
So what was the difference between today and Thursday 🤷🏻♀️, absolutely no idea. It seems some days I can run and other days I can’t. No over thinking for me today 😃

Well done on your first 10k brilliant and such an achievement.
I worry about the time less now after a chat to someone who runs regularly. They do 10k in 40 minutes (gulp) but his running buddy does it in 29 minutes (that is a crazy time) and they said you will always find someone faster than yourself to compare with and there will always be someone slower - just go out and enjoy your run. It has really helped me to enjoy it.
I got a bit worried that mine was going too high even though I felt ok. The last couple of runs it's been a fair bit lower, even over 10k so hopefully it's because I am fitter. My resting is 54, quite low.
A 29 minute 10K is getting a runner, I would call him an athlete into the elete athlete category, the athletes you see on the television during the summer months, pretty close to being in that category running a sub 30 minute 10K.
He is an elite athlete, out of the normal range for the vast majority of people but they then compare themselves to the real elite so we can always compare ourselves to someone better. Runs with my friend so that they can increase their pace. Needless to say I don’t run anywhere near them 🤣
I can so easily give up that I have to dig deep to go out again. Strange though as soon as I get my running clothes on my attitude changes and I am glad to do a run.
I have had really bad runs when I have to stop and walk after a few km and then other days I can keep going (only up to 8.5k so far). I find if I can push through the discomfort for long enough then I seem to get a second wind. The first few k are usually not much fun for me at the moment, so don’t know what that’s about. Hoping that will change over time.
Awesome, well done! It's frustrating when a run doesn't go how we had hoped but it's amazing when the next run is better than we had hoped for. I guess this is why we all love it
I was glad to read your 'bad day/good day' experience, I have had a couple of bad days and thought my age was getting the better of me, after reading your post I decided to have another go, it was pouring outside and the wind discouraging so I set about on my treadmill and to my delight I completed the 5K in just under 42 mins. I'm as puzzled as you are??!!
Glad it was useful to you. It still takes me by surprise when I have a terrible run as I think I shouldn’t by now but obviously it doesn’t work like that .
Delighted that you had a good run - wish I had a treadmill, will have to put it on the Christmas list.
January Sales are only about 6 weeks is front of us and winter is on it's way, ice and snow and shivers, brrrr! is a very strong argument to get a treadmill. Your worth it. My grandson has one with all the bell and whistles but it doesn't make him run any faster or better, mine is simple, it has speed, time, and distance. The speed is controlled from 0.5mph to 8.8mph and I find that more than adequate. Good luck my friend.
Had forgotten about the sales, may hold out to get one then. Only need something basic so I can run but stay dry and warm. Will do some research, never going to be champion runner but want to keep going.
So strange and it isn’t the first time. After a good run I don’t want to quit running, after a bad run I think I can’t run and will never be able to. Will see what the next one brings 😃
