Warm Up Run for the Vitality 10000

Sunday is race day for the 10000m crazy gang. I had put in 2x5ks this week (one hill one flat), but with 3 days to go, I just hadn't a clue what to do for a last pre race run. So, after much inner turmoil aka faffage, I settled on a half way house 7k. What pace though; race pace? Nice and slow? In the end my legs did their own thing (as usual) and I ran it at 6.15 pace...slackening off because of a hill and two gates at the end! What I learned was that there is no point in dreaming about a first sub 60 10k....I am way off that pace, and Sunday needs to be about giving it my best, but not returning to IC. Main thing is I enjoyed the run, especially meeting up with a border collie I helped find for its owner when it ran off about three years ago....it has never forgotten and always comes for a fuss. Special bond there πŸ™‚....

So, I am as ready for race day as I will ever be; bring it on πŸ˜‰

Let's hope it's not 10,000km! πŸ˜€

Seriously, good luck and enjoy race day because the run in itself will be the ink on the paper. In the pen are all the runs leading up to this. You'll be ready, fresh and prepared and I can't wait to hear how you got on. Enjoy what you worked so hard to get back. PB's are there for another day. Sunday is all about the distance and belief πŸ™‚

No wonder I was struggling for pace 🀣🀣🀣🀣🀣. Cheers GTFC, I will edit!!

10,000 kilometers is over 6,000 miles, your run this Sunday is not just as long as that, I wish you good luck for your 10K run on Sunday πŸ˜€πŸƒπŸΎ

Thanks Al.....good job you noticed or I would still have been running next ThursdayπŸ‘πŸ‘

Lol, yesterday I set out to see if I could run longer than 90 minutes, but I gave up at 83 minutes when I ran 11K, perhaps another time I will be able to run my second 10 miles run, nevertheless my run yesterday was OK. 😊 πŸƒπŸΎ

Good run Al. Maybe back off a bit next week and give it another go the week after or even the week after that? I plan another 10 miler late next week; we'll see.

PS, your original post is correct, you say 10,000m, metres, that's 10 kilometers.

I went back and edited it; πŸ˜‰

You’re on your own there BC - I for one will not be running 10,000km! 🀣

You and I thought the same today. I was also faffing about how fun to run, so I also did 7k, but a slow trail one. It has now originally turned to winter running on the common and I had to watch my footing carefully. My Brooks Cascadia 14’s were ace though, and there were no mishaps. πŸ˜€

How lovely you saw the collie again and it recognises you!

β€œSee” you on Sunday! πŸ‘ŠπŸ˜€

Beachcomber66Graduate10 in reply to cheekychipmunks

Good stuff CC. I will be running on a trail as ever; if it is a bit claggy I will don my super springy Speedgoats for an extra bit of oooomph. I think you got it right with a slower run today, but my legs are often out of control; faulty interface with the brain!! Really looking forward to Sunday πŸ‘ŠπŸ‘ŠπŸ‘Š

Think BC66 it’s time to taper, possibly! Good luck - hope it goes well.

Beachcomber66 profile image
Beachcomber66Graduate10 in reply to Gran4z

I am sure you are right Gran4z but the time to do that was today....a leisurely 7:00 /k would have been a better idea....but it is what it is!

I ran a 10k Pb last week; I may have peaked too early. πŸ™‚

Yay well done! I've just signed up so no prep for me, I'll just give it a go and see what happens 🀞

Beachcomber66 profile image
Beachcomber66Graduate10 in reply to Beatlesforever

Sounds like a plan! If you are running with others you will be carried along a bit. Otherwise making sure you finish is the main objective. πŸ™‚πŸ™‚

I'll be on my own but I just have to remember the feeling I had after my first (and only, so far) 10k and keep reminding myself that I can do it πŸ˜ƒπŸ’ͺ

Beachcomber66 profile image
Beachcomber66Graduate10 in reply to Beatlesforever

That first 10k feeling is great. Mine was on Boxing Day 2018; I can still remember the buzz!!

You will definitely do this πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘

It's just the best feeling πŸ˜ƒ Thank you! I will def try my best πŸ™‚

That a bit further than my tapering easy runs Beachcomber66. I did a nice little 15min run on Tuesday and will do the same tomorrow .

Wishing you all the very best for Sunday, and think of us virtually running with you. Hopefully we’ll be in London Together in May .

Beachcomber66 profile image
Beachcomber66Graduate10

The day before my one and only actual 10k race I went for a 15 minute jog on your recommendation......result, a 10k PB ! Guess who is going for a 15 minute jog on Saturday! I ran a really bad hill run on Tuesday....had to walk the peaks, so part of today was seeking reassurance that the oomph is still there. Pre match nerves πŸ™‚

That's a good tip - is everyone doing the 10000m on Sunday? I was planning on doing it one day this weekend, but was waiting for the weather forecast.

Beachcomber66 profile image
Beachcomber66Graduate10 in reply to PandaCory

No, people are running on different days; avoiding a huge concentration of runners setting off at the same time I guess.

Sandie1961 profile image
Sandie1961Graduate10

I have only done a 5k along the old tramway towards Portreath from our Cornish holiday cottage on Tuesday and then 3 days of almost 20k steps a day up and down Cornish hills. Oh yes, and fuelled with hake and chips at Rick Stein’s chippy in Padstow today πŸ˜‹ Shake-and-run and I are going to suss out TailChaser ’s virtual Vitality route on Saturday so that we don’t get lost, then we’ll β€œsee” you on Sunday πŸ˜ƒπŸ˜ƒ

Beachcomber66 profile image
Beachcomber66Graduate10 in reply to Sandie1961

That is serious. Altitude training and special diet....I am doomed!!

Fantastic place to spend time; we love Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly.

You need to sample lots of the local booze πŸ§™β€β™€οΈπŸ˜ˆ

I am trying to taper a bit this week ahead of Vitality 10k but no real idea what I am doing and don't really want to stop, so did an easy 6.5k yesterday, easy 5k tomorrow. I am going to try for a sub 60 minute 10k but should at least manage to beat my previous PR (I got lost in the woods!)

Anyway best of luck for Sunday! Good to know we'll have VRBs along for the journey.

Beachcomber66Graduate10 in reply to Blackberrypie

The beauty of virtual runs is that there is no such thing as getting lost!! 10k is 10k. Hope you make your sub 60; I may have left it 10 years too late.... but I don’t know how to give up.πŸ™‚

AlMorr profile image
AlMorrAmbassadorGraduate10 in reply to Beachcomber66

Talking about leaving it10 years too late, I think that I left, at least running 30 years too late, however, 30 years ago I was going long bike rides, I overtook many cyclists unlike now when I am overtaken on the shorter bike rides I do now. if I had started running 30 years and IF C25K and parkruns had existed then, my running times would, based on my quick cycling times have been sub 30 for a 5K and sub 60 for a 10K.

My philosophy is that I am delighted that I opened this new chapter in May 2018 at age 66 after 30 years of not breaking into a run; I never was a pure runner (as opposed to playing football, tennis, cricket etc . ) My comment was just an acceptance that there are limits to what I can achieve now .....we can still do PBS though πŸ‘

Good luck for Sunday BC, it sounds as if you’re on great form πŸƒπŸ™‚

Thanks IP. Border collies are often not high in the affection stakes. This one is an exception; head down and tail wagging like mad ....like Molly; an 8 year old puppy!

Your post threw me a bit when I read it Beachcomber, as I have also entered in to this and had to go and check that we have from Sat 24th until Nov 1st to do this run. I am planning on doing it next weekend.

Well done on your run and good luck for Sunday too!πŸ’ͺπŸ…

Sorry if I gave you a start Sandraj! A group of us decided to β€œgo early” with Sunday as the best fit. I will be the northern lone ranger, but VRBs will be with me in spirit!! Looking forward to it. πŸ‘πŸ‘

7k in preparation sounds just about right to me BC and enjoying it is a bonus!I did 10k today, but it was quite hard going (hence 6.48 pace) - could have been a rather exhausting back class yesterday, or perhaps just one of those runs!

Hope it goes well on Sunday -take care !!

Beachcomber66 profile image
Beachcomber66Graduate10 in reply to JonathanP

Thanks JP. Just a heavy legs day?

I have plenty of experience in taking defeat like a man....no training or taper needed for that! If I come in under 1:05 that will do. πŸ™‚

Well done Beachcomber66. Lovely story about the dog. I am running my first 10k for the vitality 10,000 sometime in the next week. Hadn't thought about changing what I do in preparation. I am in the last week of JuJu's magic plan, but had to miss the 4k run for a variety of reasons. I look forward to seeing everone's celebratory posts on Sunday, and will share mine when I do mine. Cheering you onπŸ™ŒπŸ™ŒπŸ™ŒπŸ™ŒπŸ™Œ

Thanks Lifebeginsat. I think that your prep is just fine. I am making adjustments this week because I have been running up to 10 miles recently and I need to adjust for a shorter slightly quicker run. Be cheering you on too πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘

I too will be doing the vitality 10,000 on Sunday. It will be my first 10k and the timing fits in with the end of JuJu's magic plan for me. Lets see how it goes.

Beachcomber66Graduate10 in reply to 00marks

Dame Juju’s plan will see you through (she should be Dame JuJu given the number of us she has helped to 10k). I ran my first 10k just short of 2 years ago. I ran it really slowly to make sure that I got the distance and built up from there. It will be great to do a first 10k as part of a β€œrace”.....a medal to remember your milestone. Excellent πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘

That elusive sub 60 10k. I'm with you on that. It feels like it will never happen. I've ran a few sub30 5k but haven't even ran a full 10k in months. But enjoying the run is more important than a PB.

Best of luck on Sunday. Can't wait to read all about it!

Beachcomber66 profile image
Beachcomber66Graduate10 in reply to SaskAlliecat

Yep, I did a 28:17 park run Pb last autumn, but physio has now applied a speed limiter and she is not one to defy πŸ™‚πŸ™‚. 6min/k is best I do these days. The apres run banter will be fun though πŸ‘
