I'm on Earlies this week, long days from 7 AM till 5 PM, so if I'm going to get my run in then I either have to be up at Sparrow's or leave it till I log off at work. Today I decided to get into my shorts & T shirt just after 5 when I'd finished my stint at the Salt Mine.
Buckle up the dog's leader, fire up my music, set the bluetooth headphones, and I'm off.....a bit of rain, it'll be all right, after all, it's been raining all day.
On reflection, this was a mistake. The steady rain has turned the track into a quagmire, the wind was picking up a little, and the rain was a cold steady drizzle. After the first half mile up the farm track I turned left and ran down a gentle slopey track round the edge of a farmhouse, the trees and bushes meet overhead, and it's like running in a tunnel. A *very* wet and muddy tunnel, the mud was a good couple of inches thick. Next section is a long slow rise on a farm track at the edge of open fields, the wind can really get some speed up, and the rain was driving straight into my face. It's at this point I began to think I should have given it a miss, but as I'm out there I'll just get on with it.
It's at this point I slipped on the mud, and slid off into the storm ditch, which is about 3 feet deep, with about a foot of muddy water in the bottom. I didn't hurt myself, just felt a bit of a plonker trying to lever myself back up the bank, while simultaneously shoving Scamp back up onto the track.
That's it, I admitted defeat less than 2km out, so it's turn round and squelch off back down the track, eventually getting home about 35 minutes after I set out.
No more running in ridiculous conditions like that, if the poor weather keeps up I'll find a route on paved roads around the village, running in ankle deep mud is a mug's game.
Hot bath, and a cup of hot tea, and I'm a new man. I think I'll have a couple of rest days, then see what the weekend brings. Surely the rain will stop by then?
