At last I managed to take part in a ‘real life’ 10k race today at Thruxton Motor Racing Circuit near Andover.
It was all sorts of weather, as you’d expect from an Amber weather warning. It was close to being called off, but I’m glad it wasn’t.
I didn’t sleep much last night. Woke at 4:30am and could not get back to sleep. I’d been nervous about the race all week, the last 10k I took part in was 31 years ago in Dublin.
So off I went bright and early (checking FB in case it was cancelled. Up the A34 and A303.
Registration was due to be a drive through affair, but because of the rain it was done from one of the pit lane garages. There was hand gel and the ubiquitous NHS QR code to scan. Then back to the car to put my number one with the safety pins I’d remembered to take.
We had all been five estimated start times, mine was 8:41 in Wave 3. Once I was ready I ventured back out of the car, it was cold, wet and windy. I did some warm up jogging and my usual star jumps and then I went over to the track. It was well sign posted and I walked out onto the race track. I had my watch ready to go and I had my music ready to go too. Social Distancing was great and before I knew it I was next to head out. Across the start line and away !!!
I managed to keep to my plan, which was basically start slow a 6:30 km and then finish with a 5:00 km, give it take I managed to do it in 56:54 which I was most impressed with 😀
Some things I noticed running on a race track.
1. There’re pretty exposed to the elements.
2. They don’t flood
3. Flat and wide track makes SD a doddle.
4. No spectators allowed 😢
5. Great parking.
Great medal too but just great being in a race.
