“Le Vanqueur” - The Winner

I posted a couple of weeks ago that my friend, Sam, and I had completed the cancelled 11 km town run. All alone.

Although he was well ahead he stopped just before the finishing line to talk to friends, allowing me to pip him at the post 😂

Well, he has presented me with this cup. I thought it funny and touching.

Then someone pointed out how “Le Vanqueur” is pronounced in French.

Never mind, it’s staying on my mantlepiece as it’s the only cup I’m ever going to win.

He’s still my friend.

I remember your post, it made me laugh, and as I said at the time, that’s true friendship for you! Enjoy your wonderful trophy 🏆😁😁

If it makes you feel any better, it should be spelled "vainqueur." Not that that fixes the pronunciation issue 😂😂😂

Reminds me of my language assistant teaching days, and the child who, in her desperate attempt to name a "double decker bus" triumphantly shouted, "Madame, Madame, I know! It is a double bugger!"

You’re quite right about the spelling, Cmoi. I just checked the trophy and he got it right.

Love the bus story !!!😎

The bus thing was almost 40 years ago and I can still picture the scene! I had to pinch mysef hard so I didn't laugh. Poor kid genuinely didn't realise what she was saying.

In more recent years there was the student who'd clearly worked hard to memorise everything for a vocab test. Unfortunately his dyslexia meant that his spelling led him to write something in French which translated into English as " F*ck the car again gently."

I awarded him the mark and just corrected his spelling!

Funny how those things stick in ones mind. 45 years ago I was an English “assistant” in France and have so many memories of howlers. From both sides. And they continue!!!
