Magic Plan W1 done this evening 🥵 🤗 😝 Stuck to Ju Ju’s plan and can see my speed gradually improving. Love the feeling of achievement!!

But I have such a nagging pain on the top of my right foot & in my left hip. I can run through the pain, but it feels so much worse when I get back home. It’s been like this for about 10 days now. Keep thinking it will go away. It doesn’t seem to be getting worse, so I’m keeping running every 2 days or so, by which time the pain has subsided a bit. Any tips fellow runners? Is it ok to keep going? I can’t bear the thought of having a week off!!

Just be really careful! I wrecked my Achilles tendon running a 5k and ignoring the pain (see today's post from me!). It took 3-4 months of uncomfortable physio exercises to get me back to doing C25K w1r1 today. (wanted to do much more but didn't want to push it too soon).

You might find the Eccentric heel drop exercises helpful, though they are uncomfortable to do. It might ward it off.

Here's a leaflet from the Oxford University Hospitals trust that describes the exercises. I think it's best not to do the exercises (particularly stage 3) on the same day as a run, but you could do inbetween:

Thanks so much Iain. I’ll look at that Oxford Uni leaflet and will check out some specific exercises for it.

Poor you! I hate to say it, but I think you need to rest and then if it isn't going away, perhaps get some advice? If you catch this early, you can probably get back to your longer runs quickly. The risk of continuing to run with this pain is That it may get worse and you could end up for a longer period on the IC!

Having been on the IC for about 6 weeks, I know now that if I'd sought advice a bit sooner, I may have been able to stop it embedding and stopping me running.

You say it is actual pain and that's your body telling you something.

Good luck, I do empathise!

Thank you Roxdog. It’s so frustrating but I think you’re right. My old body is telling me something!

Like Ian, I suffered Achilles tendinitis back in July. I stopped running until I saw a physio. He said it was a good job I did as I didn’t do too much damage. You should never run through pain.

Many exercises later to strengthen calf , ankle and Achilles and I am back running again.

So my advice is to seek expert help just in case you need to do the same. Good luck.

If something hurts run less, rest more. Aches and niggles are commonplace but pain is a symptom of injury.

Sorry to hear that 58soon, I know it’s tough to face physical challenges when we’re in a good head space for improving and striding forward but having a week off is so worth it. As others have said take time to find out what the problem is and listen to your body and you’ll need less time out in the long run. Take care 🤗

Thank you all for your advice. I think I needed to hear (from those who understand how I’m feeling) that I need to rest it a bit longer. I’ll take heed of what you’re all saying..... rest, rest, rest until it feels better. Frustrating it may be, but you’re right, and far better now than a longer time on the IC. If it doesn’t feel better within a week, I’ll get it checked out. Thanks for being there!

My physio said the reason for mine may have been “2 much 2 soon after 2 little for 2 long” . Apparently a well known Physio phrase.

So striving to go further and faster is not good until you have done lots of strength and stretch exercises .

But we are not experts so cannot replace seeking advice from someone who can examine you.

Thanks Dexy5. You’ve convinced me! Woken up this morning feeling more achy than ever. Time to call the physio and take more than a couple of days rest. Hope to be back out there again soon.
