Two very different runs.

On Saturday, a twitter friend was celebrating having got up early and smashing her 10k PB. as it was nearly lunchtime when I read her post, I congratulated her on her achievement and commented that given the temperature, there was no chance of any PBs happening on the run I was about to head off on.

It turns out, I lied.

I ran only my second ever sub-60 minute 10k, setting a new PB of 58:19. To say I was pleasantly surprised would be the understatement of the year.

Tonight, I went out for another run; 10k again. There was less elevation, I was deliberately taking it slow, but dearie me it was a tough one. I was well rested, well hydrated; it was actually cooler than Saturday, but I was obviously still experiencing some sort of hangover from my weekend exertions.

Not to worry though, it's still another run in the legs and under the belt, taking me to 55k so far for the month.

Stay safe, particularly in the heat...

Good run and time for you sTrongFuse, I hope where you live you missed the worst of the thunderstorms we had during last night in Scotland.

No, we had about 5 of them parked in our vicinity. It was actually pretty spectacular with them going off all around in every direction; although the cat was far from impressed...

Talking about cats, last night the temperature did not go below 17C, so my cat Eeshan decided to stay out in the garden, where I live in Cumbernauld we missed the first bout of severe thunderstorms altogether but could see the spectacular displays of lightning way to the east especially between 10.30 and about 11.45pm.

I was rudely awakened by the second wave of thunder at 3am, I opened the door and the cat rushed into the house a little wet to say the least, there was a short burst of heavy rain but we did miss the severe flooding that occurred further south and east of where I live, at 7.40am I ran the first of two 5Ks I will be running this week, it was 17C and very humid, but the run was OK otherwise, I drank plenty of juice and was not the least bit dehydrated. 😊 🏃🏾

Good luck with your runs. I'm not a morning person in any shape or form so I'm always in awe of those who get up early to do this.

Congratulations on another sub 60 minutes 10k and on tonight's 10k also. I think the hot and humid weather takes its toll on us sometimes. 😊🥵👍

Yeah, I daresay the 40k bike ride on Sunday and the 5k on Monday also had something of an impact. It's just as well my legs are attached, or they'd probably skulk off and hide somewhere.

Well done my main man! I actually really like your comparison here. Congratulations on your PB and sub 1 hour run. It's a really good distance to keep that pace up. Also, the second run is awesome in a number of ways: you can cover the distance in any terrain, you can go at a steadier pace, you still had the legs after a PB and you know that you just ran it ten- eleven minutes quicker and that it's in you when you need to call on it. Very well done. You deserve it 🥇

I was deliberately aiming for 70 minute pace last night, as I knew the heat and leg-weariness were going to be factors. Did what is probably about the "flattest" 10k route I can do around here and pretty much nailed the pace. Just wish I'd worn my road shoes instead of my trail ones, as despite the torrential thunderstorms of the night before, the paths were still bone dry and I would have appreciated the extra cushioning (first world problems...)

Two great runs. Cracking new PB for you. Sounds like you were subconsciously running to beat your friend on Saturday. You're definitely heading for a great monthly total for august, do you set targets? Happy running 🤗

I have an informal target of 117k per month. The rationale being that it's the distance between John O'Groat's and Land's End divided by 12. Being able to run the length of the UK in the course of a year seems like a reasonably achievable goal. I'm generally happy with anything over 100k on a monthly basis. In May, as part of Miles For Mind, I set myself 125k/75 miles.

Reality is that I just run what I run but my "typical" distance these days is between 8-12k with the occasional half-marathon thrown in for good measure and 5k only for recovery or "speed" training.

Great monthly target, we're running roughly the same monthly distances but I just reached 10miles for the first time and cant do your 60min 10k. Have a great month 🤗

You too. Congratulations on the 10 miles. That is a huge achievement. Just need to add on a parkrun to get you to the HM now.🤪

As my HR was up at 185 by end of my 2hr 10mile run I think I'll just accept that's my limit🤣 I did enjoy it, especially as it was ½ the route I was cycling with a local group the next day, seemed a massive achievement 🤗
