Ran 5k today and was awarded with this badge. It was quite a sad moment, these shoes have been through a lot with me, they completed my first HM with me, they’ve done 400 miles with me. I don’t want to let go!
They feel like they have some life left in them, they pass the twist test, they’re still really comfy... but I now need to get new shoes for the long runs. Maybe these old faithfuls can do the odd parkrun with me in the future.
I can’t believe that I have so much emotion invested in a pair of shoes. Others have come and go and it didn’t bother me. Can anyone suggest a good therapist to get me through these times?

Good to hear from you UNM, you don't need to throw your shoes away, they were your first proper running shoes, once you have bought a new pair for your longer runs, you could still wear them as you say for Parkruns.
I began a series of very short "test" runs as early as October 2017 after watching the Great Scottish Run on TV, they promoted C25K during a short break from the running, before that I thought C25K was something to do with running 25 kilometers.
So during the winter months of 2017/18 I ran for only a minute or two to see how I would get on.
One of the runs was on a measured official 5K course which is used for the local Santa Dash in December, I had a run on that course about a month before I started C25K and actually ran/walked it in just over 40 minutes only using my wrist watch to time myself.
I started around 10am and finished at 10.41 so I thought it's time to officially start C25K, that was on 18th April 2018 and I graduated on 18th June exactly two months later.
I ran my first full 5k on that same course around two months later, by that time I had my first Smartphone, my time was 34.24, so now I have told you about my early runs. 🏃🏾.
I don’t like to think about my very early ones 🤣 boy they were tough! Don’t know where I’d be without C25K and also the forums... not running that’s for sure!
I had a young, female, engineer working for me on a project in Albania. She had a nice car. I made a comment about it in passing and she said "Well I am a working girl!" Some things don't always translate well!
Oh dear, you've obviously had some fantastic runs with those shoes but nobody wants to work eally past their retirement date, I prescribe a little light work with them while you make friends with a shiny new pair. Happy running 🤗
Thanks. I’m starting the process of choosing colours for the next ones (why I don’t know, with free choice they’ll be all black, but it’s keeping me entertained 🤣)
I love a discount! Had freebies coming here for the last couple of weeks, todays was unexpected, 2 cans of red bull in a box... from a Strava challenge... don’t drink the stuff and if I’m really lucky I’ll win a year’s supply 🤣. Found someone who needs it though, night care worker with young kids, she says it’s all that keeps her going sometimes.
I am a therapist! But I am also a terrible hoarder, so absolutely no help to you at all! I still have my first pair of trainers to use in the garden and when they finally fall apart I may try and compost them - I don't think I could throw them away!
🤣 at least I’m not alone... that in itself is good therapy!
I know exactly what you mean regarding your shoes. The lonely miles in all weathers and they have been your constant companion. Well done on all those miles and I wish you just the same in your new pair.
🤣. There was an alternative to sit-ups called torture twists in the half sat up position... I tried them once... they did exactly what they said... there’s no way I’ll ever do them again.
I've only been wearing my Garmin watch since Monday (birthday present). On Wednesday I did almost nothing and it gave me a 'well rested' badge. I think I've got this covered. 🤣
Not done the twist test??? I do wonder who states the distance when these become over the hill? I have 3 pairs of mid range Asics. My first pair (Gel pulse 9) replaced a pair of really poor slazengers and were a major step up in comfort. I did a lot of gym work + c25k on the treadmill and then began running outdoors. They are still comfortable and cushioned however I use them for the gym and recovery mainly as they are getting a bit baggy. My next pair are hitting the 500k mark and my last pair, newest, I use for longer runs sort of 10K +.
I think there’s a lot of variables that affect the milage a shoe does... any quoted spec would have to make a lot of assumptions, weight would be an obvious one, things like stride length must play a part too. I only run in my running shoes, sometimes they walk home, but usually they’re swapped in the car... the back of which is more of a locker room these days 😂
I feel your pain, I love my Ghost 11's and they're only 10 and a half months old which feels quite new to me, but I've run 420 miles in them so figured I better order a new pair.
Thanks for the video, mine still look almost like new so will check them out against the new pair and see if they're still safe to run in for a bit longer or need relegating to walking shoes!
I hope you fall in love with your new pair when you decide what to choose, and they're so comfy that the pain of your loss is quickly forgotten 🤞😉
I’m sure the excitement of new shoes shopping will help! Pictures are a must... maybe I should always photo my new long run shoes next to their predecessors, that’d be interesting to look back on.
It’s strange, the little wear bar in the Garmin app never seems to move and then all of a sudden it’s almost full... 640km on them and they nearly made it a year, I added them to my gear 29/6/19... I guess they will have at least a run on their anniversary tomorrow.
Garmin 245... I was look at the Fenix6 solar, but at £840 that was going to have the wife looking at the back balance 🤣. When I took the solar off and compared features, there wasn’t £200 worth of difference, and very little in the features I’d be likely to use. The Fenix can happen next year... I’m thinking of going to ultra, and one I was looking at was 6am earliest starts with cutoff in the evenings... I won’t be fast, so will need maximum battery life! I also need to look at how to charge it as it’s a 5 day event... or maybe I just need 5 watches 🤣
You are so going to love that watch, we will expect a photo 😀and that pulse ox is a scary thing, mine is consistently lower than the finger one the doc puts on if you go see him/her
Mine was a bit low when I bought my watch in Jan and after sending screenshots to my daughter to show her what it did she said “your oxygen levels are a bit low” i pointed out it’s only a guide and not a medical device but she was right and a few days later there i was in hospital on oxygen so how clever is that watch? it knew
Yeah... I’ve done my reading and didn’t purchase until I read that pulse ox can be turned off 🤣. I think I’ll use it for manual checks in the daytime... the night one wouldn’t work as I tend to sleep with my wrists a little elevated amongst pillows (all the wife’s fault as I was happy with one pillow until she made me try two) and that will affect the readings apparently.
They are clever... apparently the body battery really does show if you’ve had a drink too!
Alcohol. I was reading that it shows a much lower battery when hungover, but even seems to pick up on just the one! Obviously this will need extensive research... I don’t tend to drink the night before a run, and I’m willing to, for the advancement of science, drink heavily before one of my rest days 🤣
Of course not 🤣. It’s on Garmin connect... and they do partner with Nike and UA... maybe it’s all part of the great US data grab for profits. If Nike run club suddenly starts advertising to me specifically for replacing worn out shoes we will have our answer (I haven’t told NRC about these shoes at all)
There’s a lot of variation... I was watching a video on YouTube of a South African guy who’d done 750km, including a marathon, in Decathlon’s £10 shoe!!!
I know... I already had “goodbye old friend” for retiring some other shoes... so when I do finally let go, there will be nothing... apart from new shoes 😎
It’s so sad isn’t it. But if I was you I would buy a new pair and do alternate runs in old and new. You’ll soon know when it’s time to let go. I’ve still got my first running shoes for walking in. I didn’t know you could get a badge - I obviously didn’t run far enough before replacement. 😢👟👟
When you add gear you give them a milage... I’ve retired other pairs before the my reached the number, so this was the first time I had the sad news that they were going onto end of life running.
Think these will do a couple more long runs while I break the new ones in with some 5ks and then switch the two over. New watch will be some kind of comfort I think 😎
Yes all mine have been recorded on garmin, and I found it sad telling it that I was retiring my first pair, but given I had 2 other pairs of road shoes and a pair of trails, it had to be done.
I need more shoes... got my flats for short and quick... new longs coming... I need a couple in between, and then I can start on the trail shoes... so I need cross country spikes, mud specialists, ones for rock, and some hybrids... will have to sneak them past the wife one at a time though 🤣
