I'm going to do the longest run on a weekend as that's when I have most time. So today was 5.5k.
Knowing it was longer than my normal consolidation runs (though I have done one 6k), I started to mentally prepare. Take it slow, nice and easy. Slow down even more on the hills. No rush. Treat this as a recovery run.
All went well and my RunKeeper app announced I was 15 minutes in. Less km than i would normally hit by that point, but that's the plan. Next voice in my ear told me I'd done 30mins. Still felt good. Then came the vocals telling me I'd done 5k.
That's the point, when I realised that despite my mental preparation, I hadn't given a thought to my tech preparation. I need to do another 0.5km. How will I know when I've done that? And so the guess work kicked in, and I realised I'm a terrible judge of distance. When I checked my phone RunKeeper had me at 5.8km, Starava at 5.9km.
At that's when I stopped. I've done it and then some. Well done Mig. And then I gave myself a great big kick. What have you just done you stupid boy! I stopped at 5.9km. I mean, who stops at 5.9km. Nobody. If you've gone that far, you might as well go for 6km.
Still kicking myself!! But hey, I'm off the mark, on my way. And I now know I need to rethink the vocal markers on my app so I know when I should stop!
Happy weekend and happy running everybody

There is an amused smile on my face, thinking about 2.5k as a short run. I wouldn't have though about it that way when I started in October that's for sure
I did a 5k yesterday (first solo run since starting) as I we had a night out and I’m rubbish with a hangover 😂 So today I accompanied my Wife on her run on my bike . I was amazed at how far we have come and also how far 5km actually is ! She tried out the Stepping Stone C25k+ and loved it .
That’s true, we did the timed at least started it and 15 minutes short run felt hardly worth changing for and we did it in a dark park after that we went along the sea front where it’s lit up
When you look back you realize how far you’ve come
She posted the instructions for both the timed and distance Magic Plan yesterday or might even have been on Thursday. Go on to her thread. I'm sure you'll find it there. Good luck ☺
Vocal markers? I have wondered about finding an app that can actually tell me how long/how far I've run. At the moment I have three apps running - Strava, timer and a podcast. I have to juggle them as I'm running which isn't easy.
Shame about stopping at 5.9 but hey! that's a lesson learnt I'm sure. You too have begun your Magic 10 journey - let's try and enjoy the scenery 😁
Yeah the RunKeeper app gives you a choice of voices. Dont choose the drill Sargent! After telling me I've done 30 mins and giving me my distance and pace, he then takes pleasure from shouting into my ear 'come on, that dont make you cookies' 🤣.
But you get the option of setting a prompt after so many minutes and / or setting a prompt after so many km.
Great, I posted on the week 1 thread having done the same, starting with the 5.5 yesterday and asking about timers, I've downloaded something but it doesn't seem very useful (except for trying out some intervals) thanks I'll take a look at run keeper!
I did 35 minutes yesterday, still thinking about what to do with the short run. Tuesday’s, Thursday’s and Saturday’s for me with Tuesday being the short one.
I think I'm going to take the distance option over the duration option.
So for the short runs, I think I'm going to go at normal pace for 5 mins and then alternate between 30 seconds at speed and 90 seconds really slow. At the end of 15mins, I'll just go at normal pace right up to the distance marker (assuming I still haven't hit it yet!)
I’m using the Nike app, there are some short coached runs on there with that sort of interval, might try those or might just up the pace for 15 minutes, I know I can do that. Should be interesting!
That’s pretty much how I feel. I’m doing the timed one and honestly will be happy if I can run for an hour. Once that happens I’ll have a very good benchmark to consolidate on.
Ooh yeah, ouch. I’d be crouching and crying in a shower for a good couple of hours of I did that.
If you manage to mentally navigate past any of the flashing OCD neurons that are currently trying to self destruct your entire brain, that’s a bloody good run. Again.
I feel your pain, I did similar on the consolidation runs for c25k, I’ve now got Strava talking to me every 0.5k telling me time, pace and distance in my ear.
Same as you I am choosing distance over time spent running, just done 8k last week, then at parkrun got a PB!
Lol, I do things like that too...or decide to run a certain number of miles when my phone (or watch as of a couple of weeks ago, boy I love Christmas vouchers!) is set to km...so then I'm doing mental gymnastics while I run trying to figure out exactly when I'm supposed to stop!
It's all part of the fun and at least at 6K next week you'll know you've got this 👍
