ForbiddenPlanet, first sub 30 minute 5k, congratulations, also, I am sure you will be able to get that BMI down a bit with all the excersises and runs you are doing. 😊 🏃🏾
Thank you Al. I think my next goal is go from running 10K once a week to twice a week, and then three times a week, so yes, hopefully as I run more the weight may start to reduce!
Thank you Arthur. I cheated a little on the fitness side as I was a keen hiker before I began C25K. Also, you did your sub 30 5K on a Park Run, which I think is more difficult. I have an ankle that sprains easily so I'm too scared to do Park Run!
Yes I was never really ‘couch’ either, always did a lot of walking. Not sure about parkrun being harder, the other runners kinda pull you round, only issue is if it’s crowded at the start it might slow you down but once you get going it’s easier I think.
As for your ankle - I can see how that would make you reluctant to run on certain kinds of terrain but every parkrun is different. Maybe your nearest one is more of a trail course and you’re basing your comment on that? Some parkruns though are flat and mostly on tarmac paths, couldn’t be any harder than where you normally run.
Thank you for that Arthur. Food for thought, and something I should consider. I always run the same route and I know where the uneven ground is and I'm sometimes a little unsocial hogging the even side of the path if there's a group of people coming towards me walking side by side. And I take care to run at times when I know the route is less likely to be busy. So my run is very controlled. Running in a group over unfamiliar ground I fear I would not have the same controlled and predictable experience.
Yes I was a bit like that before my first one. Not about the footing so much, I’m mostly OK with that but the idea of the unknown. My home parkrun at Montrose though is now a familiar route with familiar people.
Thanks Dexy. I look forward to congratulating you when you get there. Sometimes the journey is more enjoyable than arriving at your destination, and seems like you really enjoy your running. So I think you are way ahead of me! 😁
Thanks Rigpig. My long term goal is to run 10k 3 times a week as a regular habit - so in that respect I think we may be similar. Best of luck with your running; I'm sure you'll soon be matching and surpassing me!
Thank you so much! Well I’ve always played the guitar since I was 11. Anyway did try the piano but late in life and having guitar as well there was a bit too much.
So I’ve stuck with my guitar and I sing and record covers, folk mainly and I’m also trying to write my own songs.
Lucky you - really - you reminded me of how much I love guitar. Many times I wished I'd learned it instead of piano. I know all that boring classical stuff on the piano whereas guitar OWNS the popular music that most people love. (Although I do love the classical stuff).
We are indeed so lucky. Feels like being at the centre of the universe when, very occasionally, my clumsy fingers somehow make the sound that is in my head come out of the piano.
Great run FP....you are a mere youngster at 62! Park Run and one road race apart, all of my running is solo and on trails. My sub 30s have been at Park Run on a fairly flat and even tarmac course. Having other people running alongside and ahead (mainly ahead!) of me changed my perception of what I could achieve. You know your own body though so enjoy doing your thing 👏👏👏👏
Thanks Beachcomber. Congrats on your Park Runs. I do get some motivation from other runners (mostly when they accelerate past me!) as although I run solo, my route is very popular with runners. I used to walk the same route and was jealous of them; it's nice to be one of them now, even if they do all overtake me. 😁
Thanks kp. I'm not sure if what worked for me would help you or not, though I'm happy to say what I think helped me.
I think running 10K once a week helped me improve my overall fitness which in turned helped the times on my 2 5K runs each week. Later on I hope to be able to run 10K in under 60 minutes. And I plan to run 15K once a week in the hope it will help me reach that goal.
One thing I believe was holding me back, was focussing too much on my pace whilst I was running, and in particular, often looking at the Garmin watch on my wrist. I found when I just concentrated on being comfortable I was able to keep a good rhythm. For me I concentrate on my arms - if they keep a good rhythm then the rest of me seems to fall into line.
Other people made recommendations to me such as interval training and hills which I believe work for many people. I think we need to find what works for each of us and that's part of the process of learning to be a runner.
