Continuous knee pain starting the night after a run?

Yesterday I ran for 4 miles, which was after a 4 mile run last Sunday, and a short (2.5 km run) on Wednesday. All seemed fine until woken up at 3 am by pain in my right knee, which kept me awake until morning.

No problem, I thought. But Saturday evening and it's still there. No swelling, but slightly concerned that I've taken pain killers (ibuprofen and paracetamol) and they have no effect. Stretching my leg relieves the pain, until I stop stretching.

I'm thinking this is a normal run of the mill strain and I just need to rest for a few days? But hoping to tap into the practical wisdom and experience of the forum. If others have experience of this sort of thing I would love to hear from you, please.

Thanks - that does seem likely. Just a bit surprised that I didn't have pain when I was running, but it developed later, instead.

Poor you, that sounds nasty. I’m afraid I can’t help with a diagnosis but have you tried to ice it to relieve the pain?

I bought a great ice pack that can also be heated and have used it on my ankle, knee, calf and thigh and I found it really helped. It came with a strap to keep it secure.

Hope you feel better soon.

Thanks - as there's no swelling I didn't think of an ice pack but maybe you're right, and it would help, esp if it could be used to provide heat.

Just posting is a way of thinking out loud, and since I first posted I thought of just keeping my leg and knee tensed all the time, which is helping a lot - in fact pain free for the first time today. Amazing the ways in which this forum can help!

Glad you’re feeling better.

I haven’t ever had swelling that I can see but if i’m ever achy or sore I just reach for the cool pack and elevate my legs and it seems to help. I just remember reading Ice compression and elevation. The pain relief may be all in my mind of course but it’s justification for lying on the sofa and doing nothing!! 😂

Thanks - great to hear about what has worked for you. Elevating my legs usually works for me, but not today. But using / tensing the muscles I've developed through running has worked like magic.

I wouldn't have got there, though, without being able to post on this forum and interact with super people like your good self. 👍

Glad you’re sorted. It is a great forum!

It certainly is. You can't imagine how happy I am right now. From thinking I was on the IC for the foreseeable, to pain free. Wow.

Thank you. I view it as a lucky escape and a reminder that I need to be sensible, and not run too far, too fast, too soon.
