Start ju ju's magic plan, it's on this forum and there is a very big group starting on 9th November you'll get loads of help and support. It mixes up distances to get you to 10k / 60 mins in 8 weeks then you can move onto your target distance

Hey well done for giving yourself a great challenge to look forward to! Given the amount of time you have my advice would be as follows...

Consolidate W9R3 for 3 weeks (3 x 5K runs a week) Then swiftly move onto Juju Magic plan (8 week plan) to take you to 10K, consolidate a few weeks after you’ve finished and then maybe look at a plan for a 10 mile goal, sorry I have not got this far yet but increasing one run a week by 1KM seems to be the advice, and then the HAlf Marathon is just another 2 mile or so! Voila! Remember to give yourself a little break in between the plans, have a week off, try different exercises to rejuvenate your love for running and by October you’ll be so ready!

Hi emmat7! I've also set my self for the challenge of Cardiff half next year :) I'm quite close to your situation, I finished c25k, been consolidating for a while, my PB is 38 min and I'm overweight! I'm currently doing Ju-Ju's magic plan to get to 10k, my current plan (though I change it every week, I like planning) is to get to 10k before Xmas, then take a break, consolidate 10k and start a plan to improve my 10k time (I did it after my first 5k, I used a Garmin coach plan, and it gets you running more than the distance that you are preparing). That should take me to the beginning of May, where I will take another break and start a half marathon training plan. I've looked at the ones in Garmin coach, but there are others online (you can check Hal Higdon, they have free plans and a free app, and there are many plans out there provided but race organisers...)

Good luck with your plans, let us know how it's going!

Thankyou that’s really helpful and I will do a similar thing there is a 10 k in margh Park in January that I might aim to do I moving to try this just out of curiosity is it recommended to have breaks good luck are you ina running clubam thinking of joining one in pontyclun I’m not sure where you live but if you ever need a buddy !

I think there are two things about "breaks". One is that while you should increase your mileage slowly, it's recommended to have an easy week every now and then (some people do it every 4 weeks, some every 8, you need to find what works for you), when instead of increasing you decrease you mileage. The other type of break is a complete "I'm not running this week", I have planned some of those to allow other commitments to fit my plan, and also because I think it's good for me psychologically, but that's only based on a personal feeling, I haven't read about it.

I'm not in a running club, not looking for one, my schedule is to chaotic and I don't think I could make that work

I forgot, there is another forum, "Marathon and Race support" not so active as this one but there is a lot of good advice there too

Well done! You can totally do it! I’m behind you I’m only in week 9 and I signed up for it too. Also going to do the Cardiff bay 10k in March all being well! Follow the 10k+ plan and that should build you up nicely for doing the longer runs! Good luck!

I’m in awe of you signing up, well done! I was in a very similar position to you in about June this year, what helped my pace was trying to run once a week with people (slightly) faster than me and then I very gradually increased the distance. I’ve managed to do do 10k now and going to gradually increase. Spoke to someone in a running shop and he suggested to try for a 10 mile event next as it’s in between. Ps I’m 52 too, also overweight, if I’m honest running hasn’t really helped weight loss (I still eat too much) but I definitely look and feel a lot better.
