Picking a 10K race

I'm starting the November group of Juju's plan next week and want to start looking at 10K races next year.

I've only ever run parkruns.

Obviously there aren't any 10K Parkruns. Where do people go for listings of 10K races? How do you know which ones are friendly and not full of super competitive speedy people?

Just google 10k races near me. Let’s do this and find a race are good. In my experience all races have a mixture of super competitive and normal people so I wouldn’t worry too much 👍🏽 Have fun!

You talk about 10K parkruns, I don't think that there are any, however, the last time I ran a 5K parkrun I am sure that I saw one of the faster runners who had finished the 5K continue to run a further 5K to make up the 10K, he was going fast, it wasn't one of the slower runners who were on that part of the course.

I go on here findarace.com/ and don’t much care how fast the rest are.

I’ve never run a 10k, hubby has, and we’ve both been involved in the safety network for lots of other types of races. From experience all competitors are friendly and often the largest cheers and congratulations go to those further down the listings as they are the ones who have put in the extra effort. Choose one for location or time of year or one a friend does then go and enjoy it. Marshals and spectators will cheer you all the way to the end. Good luck

Once you find a race, you can have a look at the results from the previous year, you will see if there people finishing with all times or only really fast people :)

I’ve run two 10k races so far, both local ones - very friendly and well-supported. I enjoyed both although one had killer hills and the other was in torrential rain! Next weekend I’m doing the Olympic park 10k which promises to be flat. There won’t be the same amount of support as the race happens every month and it’s just laps of the park (almost like a 10k parkrun although sadly not free) so it will be interesting to see if I find it as enjoyable. I would say find a local charity one to start with then you know it will be more friendly and less competitive! x

Using the tools mentioned above, check to see whether races are chip timed or fun runs. I entered my first 10k race to find it wasn’t actually 10k, and I was most disappointed. I was told it didn’t matter because it was a fun run. The Simply Health Great runs are very well organised chip timed runs.
