I’m not sure my trainers will recover from all the mud.
Most of my run was great. I run alongside the canal so apart from jumping small puddles it’s usually fine. This week I’m running further and took a detour to avoid a long dark canal tunnel. I think next time I go that way I’ll take a torch and go via the tunnel.

That photograph must be a bit like many running and walking paths all over the UK, those proper running shoes are expensive, you don't want them to be ruined running through mud, I have had to cut about 50% off my normal running route because of puddles and mud on the route, made worse by the Foresty Commission cutting down a lot of trees on part of my running route making it impossible to run or walk along, so I have had to work out a new route, means running about 3K, making a U turn where the worst of the mud is, run for another 2K to make up the 5K.
Yes, running shoes are expensive- I wonder if there are any suitable for muddy conditions- I like running outside and even my local parkrun gets pretty muddy in places.
In the very early days when I was doing a few "test runs" I did a few 1 minute runs in boots, it wasn't I began C25K proper that I ran my runs with trainers, once I graduated I went for a gait analysis and bought the recommended shoes and socks to match.
It's a similar problem (although not quite as bad as in your photo) on my normal route. It's also the whole clean up performance, washing shoes, getting them dry etc etc that's a real pain. The trouble is I prefer the 'rural routes' to running around the streets, maybe somebody will design some running wellies 😂😂
wow that is some serious mud! No way to avoid it either (unless you turn back) I jsut bought some asics trail shoes with GTX (weatherproof) but i don't think they would have survived that!!! There is a brand called innov8 - who do trail shoes specifically for mud! maybe worth a look if this is going to be your winter
Thanks for the tip on the shoes - yeah I think this will be my winter - I can run on roads but don’t really like it so I run on trails unless it’s too dark x
I could've matched this yesterday! 👍I love a muddy run and a decent pair of runnning shoes will last just fine (just a little dirty). I have trail shoes but prefer the non- gortex ones, as when you run through deeper puddles, they drain more quickly - but it's all personal preference. Look out for Road to trail type shoes (often called hybrids ) as these are great for a run that encompasses road, grass, muddy trails etc.
Many people allow their muddy shoes to dry before just knocking the dirt off but I hose mine off and stuff with newspaper and you would never know where they've been!😀 I also have a 'Boot buddy' which I often use - saves on water and makes the cleaning up really quick! Good luck!🙂
Looks like a river! Need flippers more than runing shoes.. lol
A pair of trail shoes will offer a tad more grip in those conditions, if you're going to run in that terrain often, luckily it's not like that all over the UK, I was out today for nearly 8k and trail was fine & dry..
I just bought some road to trail shoes that should allow me to get through the mud over the winter...I haven't tried them yet though. I went with Inov8
