First 10k....in the bag!

So I’ve been using the wonderful magic plan as a framework for increasing my distance. I haven’t kept exactly to it as life just gets in the way sometimes, but the format is certainly a good one as I managed my first 10k this morning.

Having checked the weather and with the increase in heat for the south east due over this weekend I was so determined to get my long run in this morning.

Last minute plans last night though meant a trip to Jazz on the Pantiles in Tunbridge Wells to watch my brother in his band The Skatonics. A tad too much dancing and way too many drinks 🤭 and I thought my plans for this morning would be scuppered. Late night doesn’t bode well for an early morning run, but my running gear was out waiting for me, so how could I not?

I’m so pleased to have achieved this distance. It’s slow but steady. To go from the couch having not done any real exercise since leaving school (& hating it then!) to running a 10k at the age of 50 blows my mind.

Thank you to everyone on here. I don’t post often but this forum is my early morning read every day and is what gets me out of that door. You guys really don’t know what an amazing, positive bunch you are!

Thank you all!

Congratulations on completing your first 10k run today, that time is very good, recently I have been working on slowly increasing my time by 1k a week so to eventually get to 10k in around two weeks time, last Wednesday I ran a 8k in 61 minutes, next Wednesday it should be about 68 minutes by running 9k and the 10k the following Wednesday, if I keep my pace at around 162 steps a minute I hope to run that 10k in around 75 minutes.

ScampiedoodleGraduate10

Sounds very similar to me AlMorr, although I have no idea how many steps a minute I do as I’m sure it changes with each km and every change of song in my playlist too!

Good luck with your plan, it sounds really structured and I’m sure you’ll smash it. I’ll look forward to seeing your post in a couple of weeks time!

Hi it was in may and I have not ran one since, I will work up back to 10k when it's cooler. I really find it harder in the summer. I tend to stick to 5k and am happy with that. Everyone is different. Do what's best for you. Good luck . Happy running. 🙂🏃‍♀️

Raspberrypink profile image
RaspberrypinkGraduate10 in reply to Scampiedoodle

Hi, I’m not sure what to do next and posted about it. Don’t think I’m ready to much longer distances at the moment . What about you?

Scampiedoodle profile image
ScampiedoodleGraduate10 in reply to Raspberrypink

Likewise! My legs are telling me never to attempt that again so really not sure what to do!! I’ve just read your post and the responses (thank you) all very useful and so I guess I’ll do a couple of shorter runs and see how next week pans out & whether I attempt it again or stick to 5ks...I think I’d like to get “comfortable” with 10k but I’m guessing that means attempting longer distances......decisions decisions 🤔

GoGo_JoJo profile image
GoGo_JoJoGraduate10 in reply to Scampiedoodle

Not necessarily. Just practicing 10k will get easier over time. 👍🏻😁

You managed a great time, you could also just try running to time, start with 1hr 10 mins and use that as your long run, you'll be surprised how far you can go as it becomes more "normal"

Scampiedoodle profile image
ScampiedoodleGraduate10 in reply to GoGo_JoJo

Thanks for that GoGo_JoJo my 5k time improved as I was working towards 10k (a lovely bonus that I wasn’t working on) so I assumed lengthening the distance in excess of 10k would then improve the time for that distance. Having said that I really like the idea of working to a time limit so thanks for that suggestion ....Only problem is if I get close to 10k after 1 hr 10 mins I’ll want to carry on to hit 10k again so the time will go out of the window! 🙄

GoGo_JoJo profile image
GoGo_JoJoGraduate10 in reply to Scampiedoodle

Ah but that's where self control comes in! We learned to listen to the programme remember. So if you go out for a 10k, do a 10k, if you go for an hr and 10, do just that. I learned that lesson the hard way and can definitely advocate doing what you set out to do, especially at this point of your progress 👍🏻😉

Scampiedoodle profile image
ScampiedoodleGraduate10 in reply to GoGo_JoJo

Self control - can I get some of that on eBay?? 😂

Well done Scampiedoodle! That first 10k is so special isn’t it

I have not repeated mine since the first so am building back up again gradually so as not to injure myself. Wish I’d carried on doing that distance more regularly tbqh.

Scampiedoodle profile image
ScampiedoodleGraduate10 in reply to BarbieW

Thanks BarbieW - I know that if I don’t keep up with consolidation runs I’ll lose the ability but it’s quite daunting as I know how difficult it was!! Good luck with your journey back to build things up again.

Well done, Scampiedoodle! 🏃🏃. I have signed up for a 10k run in couple of weeks and am trying to do 10k plus two out of three times a week. Trying not to concentrate on my time just to do the distance at the moment. Like you I am 50+ and started C25K last January. You guys on this forum really do make a difference. Your encouragement gets us through. Thank you 😀

Scampiedoodle profile image
ScampiedoodleGraduate10 in reply to Reggiegirl

Wow 10k a couple of times a week sounds a tad beyond me at the minute but I think I’m initially taking the advice of GoGo_JoJo and trying to do times runs, so perhaps a 1 hr 10 min at the end of next week won’t some shorter runs thrown in.

Good luck with the 10k run - I’m sure you’ll smash it with all that consolidation.

Congratulations Scampiedoodle 🏅 the first 10k is an awesome feeling, it’s an amazing achievement. I did my first 10k on Sunday and I can’t stop smiling!! It really does something for the confidence, well done 👍
