How much is a single baked bean worth?

2.21km, to be exact.

My child is fussy with food. I did all the right things according to the books but at 9 years old, he eats like a fastidious bird. I said he had to eat one - one!!! - baked bean on toast for lunch and he negotiated as if his life depended on it not too. He hit the jackpot with “How about we go for a run, mummy?”

Hmmm...

60 seconds later we were in the drizzle, running. He has no problem whatsoever finding his conversational pace - the child never shuts up. After about 500m he ran out of breath and said it was time to walk and so it continued, walk/talk/run/talk. He likes a bit of melodrama and played the broken child quite well in the second km before perking up and sprinting the final 200m home to his ham sandwich.

“Running is HARD, mummy!”

I swallow my instinctive “No sh*t, Sherlock” and tell him it gets easier with practice.

Nice run for you today with your son ktsok, he sounds like a bit of a chatterbox, good company for you, both of you will soon be able to run a 5K parkrun one of those days.

😂 Lovely to run with your son. I am on his side though - baked beans are the devil's work!

Excellent to get him running so young. He will thank you for it.

Haha 😂😂 that’s funny. Children are excellent negotiators 😉

Tell him that baked beans are very good food for runners 💪

Clearly - I wonder how far he would run to avoid eating a whole can?!

😁😁😁😁

My son would only eat beans on toast for ages, but I was told it was ok as it fulfilled his needs Kids do change but keep trying him with different foods If he keeps running with you he’ll be hungry so might be more receptive to trying new stuff 🙂

We will see... I’m sure all those Annabel Karmel carefully blitzed home cooked baby meals to extend his palate MUST pay off at some point!

I would have eaten beans on toast every day given the choice.

I don't have them often now, but might have a go this weekend 😋😋

I had the same urge! Haven’t eaten them for years and then suddenly just felt like beans on toast with melting cheese... 😋

I make em these days. Haricot beans, onion, garlic, paprika, chilli, tomato paste sorta vibe 😋

Jell6 profile image

That sounds good, is it a lengthy process?

Nah, not at all. Once the onions are cooked. I used tinned haricots I hasten to add I like mixed beans too eg haricots and red kidney beans, but cannelloni, borlotti, butter beans etc all fine

I make a good vat full and then you can eat them on all manner of things, and can form the basis of a chilli, stew or pasta sauce, jacket potato topping World’s your oyster 🙂

Thank you for this, I will be giving it a go😋😋

Loved your post today ktsok! It is an echo of my family running experience.

Are they fully fledged independent eaters and runners now?!

The eldest is close to being kicked out of the nest. At least another 5 years with the other end 'freedom' 👍😁👍

Haha, I have 2 fussy eaters and one that eats everything from oysters to steak and kidney pie. Funnily enough she doesn't like baked beans though😂 They were all raised the same so it's not only nurture, nature has a lot to do with it. She's the middle one too, so it's not even that I was more or less strict with each child. The boys though are hard work lol.

Sounds like yours has mastered the art of distraction : )

It drives you bonkers, doesn’t it?! Hopefully your boys are fussy about the same foods!

I tell myself he is learning good life skills: not only the art of distraction; but negotiation; a bit of craftiness; how to find the opponents weakness... he will go far - but not as a chef!

Sounds like my house! Sometimes you wonder what keeps them going but I was a fussy eater as a kid to, so it's karma I guess. My mum thinks it's hilarious.

As long as he is running about and appearing fairly energetic I guess I won’t worry too much... I wish my mother found it hilarious, I think she thinks it’s slack parenting!
