A Running Nose...

... is no help to running feet, I find. Has anyone solved the where-to-carry-tissues-conveniently problem?

40 minutes this morning across the fields & home over the sports ground and past the new housing. The barley fields have been cut & the permanent grazing fields topped. Season moving on.

FACT I have learned recently: ragwort, source of hay fever & banned from fields when I was a horse lady for its toxic potential, is also a native plant hosting a vast array of important insect life at different stages of their life cycles. Guess I need to admire its yellow brilliance & figure out the tissue thing.

Still trying with the strength & flex. CP2, I don’t think I’ll ever love plank. ☹️ And JaoJao, that Dead Bug is a killer but I am slowly winning. 😊

Happy running, folks. I enjoy all your posts. 👏🏼😄

I tuck mine inside my bra strap up near my shoulder - which is ok on short trips but if I’m on a longer run and sweating more it gets damp so I tuck them in my fitbelt.

Me too. I hate hankies so I keep a mini packet of tissues in my flip belt.

Ah ha. Hadn’t thought of the bra strap, and waistband gets sticky really quickly! Don’t have a belt yet.... sounds hot. 🌞😅

A fitbelt is made from wicking fabric Granspeed, but you're right you can feel warm around the waist in it..but it will carry a smallish flat waterbottle!😊

I'm pleased with mine. xx

I have 2 small bottles for mine and I carry my phone in the front pocket

I got a stretchy belt from Ebay. I carry my keys and phone with me.

And me! Though I now have a pair of yoga pants with actual pockets!

One in the belt, one down the bra but it does get a little moist 😁 Also it's no fun putting it back again when it's been used 😲 it's easier in cool weather, I tend to have pockets I can use then.

Granspeed profile image
GranspeedGraduate10 in reply togrumpyoldgirl

Yes, me too. My summer gear has a phone pocket but no room for tissues. 🤣

grumpyoldgirl profile image
grumpyoldgirl in reply toGranspeed

It's not just running gear, clothes designers seem to have decided that women never need pockets, because we, err, always have a cute little handbag with us or something?! 😂😂

Granspeed profile image
GranspeedGraduate10 in reply togrumpyoldgirl

Know just what you mean! I now often shop at outdoor firm Rohan because they believe in pockets for women. 👍

limberlou profile image
limberlouGraduate10 in reply toGranspeed

I used to buy men’s trousers to wear at work because I never had enough room in women’s ones for all the stuff I had to carry all day. Work keys, work phone, Stanley knife for boxes, pen, little notebook...women’s pockets you can barely put your hand in.

grumpyoldgirl profile image
grumpyoldgirl in reply tolimberlou

Yes! And then there are pretend pockets. What's them all about? 🤷

Bumbag or flipbelt - is this a thing then? Does every runner get a runny nose? Thought it was just me - though it's cold air that causes mine - in this weather I just need a tissue to mop up the sweat!

And regarding ragwort, there is a species of moth (burnet moth I think) that can only lay it's eggs on ragwort. I was merrily destroying the ragwort in my new garden (begone, killer of horses!) and found scores of caterpillars on it. I ended up leaving a small patch in our hedgerow for them 🐛🐛🐛

I get a runny nose too....very annoying! get through several tissues and have to slow down to blow each time!! Is there a way to prevent this??

Not that I know of. Any advice anyone?

I prefer a hanky to tissues, so only need one. And these days I always use the only pair of shorts I’ve got which have proper pockets ...... I used to run with hanky flapping from my fitbelt, but it wasn’t a good look 👎

Yes, that’s the sort of thing I was reading about. Save a bit of ragwort is my new rallying cry, amidst the sneezing. 😄

JonathanP profile image

Have a runny nose every run - thankfully I have at least one pocket in every pair of shorts! 👃😀

Granspeed profile image
GranspeedGraduate10 in reply toJonathanP

Smart planning. I run in capris, and the struggle to get things out of stretchy pocket is epic. Sneeze has come & gone by then.... 😄

I’ve resorted to carrying a tissue in my hand. I have more in my fit belt, with phone, keys etc, but it takes me an age to retrieve them, I try to time that for road crossing when I usually have to stop anyway!

Granspeed profile image
GranspeedGraduate10 in reply toKat332zz

Perhaps I can blame my slow times on the runny nose? Must be a factor, I reckon. 😄

*Am I the only one who blows my nose on the fly by covering the other nostril* ??? 😳😳 PLEASE say I’m not? 🤭

Not in plain sight I hasten to add. I wait for the right moment .... Often as not I’m alone, so no restrictions! 👍

in reply tocheekychipmunks

I hear that is called a “snot rocket”!😆

Not something I would do - just like I wouldn’t wear my slippers outside - I had a tough mother 🥴

cheekychipmunks profile image
cheekychipmunksGraduate10 in reply to

I used to get hay fever (not so much now), and I’d get a very sore nose if I kept blowing it. I guess that’s why I’m quite efficient at snot rockets!

This is what I do, I hate soggy tissues and just think of all the trees you are destroying 😉.

Thank heavens - I’m so glad I have a buddy in this! As others have said, it’s more like water anyway. I wouldn’t (couldn’t) do it with the ‘thick stuff’ 😖😖😖

Normally in the bra to start the. Pockets. I have had, disgusting to admit resorted to wiping my nose on my buff oce after Tissues disintegrated

An old fashioned hanky works best.

As a long time hay-fever sufferer (more perpetual-rhinitis in fact - runny nose all year round), I have a vast stock of white men's cotton hankies in various stages of wear. I have a folded one for emergencies in the tiny back pocket of my tights (with a parkrun token), and stuff one up each sleeve for easy access while running.

I can't stand tissues as I find they make my nose sore. I can't use cheekychipmunks method - bushy moustache....😢

cheekychipmunks profile image
cheekychipmunksGraduate10 in reply totheoldfellow

Oh no please don’t even try TOF! That wouldn’t end well! 😖😅😖

Deals1 profile image

Good post and answers!

Yeah I always have a runny nose when running.. Never had hay fever begot so don't think it's that. I did Google it one and it can be a thing apparently. I normally wear a sweat wrist band and took a tissue in there, also keep some in bum bag and maybe one in pants waist band. But as cheekychipmunks said I've been a little naughty too recently and have done the little blow into hands without tissue!! 😂 I know this is probably TMI but most of the time I'm so hot n sweaty can't really tell the difference! Plus my nose gets sore too. Confession over 🤣

in reply toDeals1

I use a cotton hanky (tucked into my waistband for storage - wrist sweat band sounds a clever idea) ) but I’m not sure the runny nose is “snot” (sorry!) - more like water. I hope so anyway as I then use the hanky to mop my sweaty brow, neck and hair - it is wet by the time I finish. I have to wash them myself in the washing machine along with my running gear as my wife thinks cotton hankies are gross (and I don’t use fabric conditioner on my running clothes).

Granspeed profile image
GranspeedGraduate10 in reply to

Well, having just read your Nasal Trauma post, Dozydoughnut, I reckon you are the current authority on all things nose! I shall go for the cotton hanky but adapt to the wristband carrier. 😄 (And my tea nearly went flying reading your post. 🤣)

My nasal passages are now my most attractive feature 😁

Hidden yeah that's kinda what I meant when I said I was hot n sweaty and the runny nose wasn't much different! Yeah more like water... Hence my new found technique!! 😂 I also use the wrist band and sometimes nose. Wash my kit separately too and no fabric con 👍.

I use a bumbag, I need multiple tissues on a run! I have a cheap one from sports direct that has done me well. I have also found that taking an antihistamine half an hour before running really helps as well, I use the benadryl allergy ones that you can take up to 3 a day.

happysouls profile image
happysoulsGraduate10

I've got a couple of microfibre cloths about flannel size and fairly compact soft material. I run with one in my hand and use it for nose blowing and sweat mopping. I'd never be able to keep up with my nose with just tissues.

Sandie1961 profile image
Sandie1961Graduate10

I have a bumbag as well. I know it’s probably very 80s but it is handy for phone, keys, coins, parkrun barcode and tissues!

Yes I have the same at the moment even though ive never suffered in the past. Still its outranked by the sheer joy of being out there running and liking every bit of it.

I roll a wad up and tuck it under the front of my waistband. Seems to stay there intact

Hi grandspeed. I tuck mine into my bra also. Slightly in the cup. Does the trick all the time. However make sure the tissues are not to bulky hee!hee!🏃‍♀️🤣🤣

I run in a cycling top, has a longer back with 3 pockets. Phone, keys and tissues. Never notice they're there.

Granspeed profile image
GranspeedGraduate10 in reply toFleetnot

But can you get at the tissues/hanky while running? If I stopped every time, I might not get home until lunch after starting before breakfast?

Fleetnot profile image
FleetnotGraduate10 in reply toGranspeed

Easily, never have to stop. Rediscovered top when too warm to wear a jacket and I needed pockets, works great.

Fleetnot profile image
FleetnotGraduate10 in reply toFleetnot

Have a look at dare2be sale..as low as 7.50 with one pocket. However just realized mine is a man's as they have 3 pockets...can anyone explain that logic?

Granspeed profile image
GranspeedGraduate10 in reply toFleetnot

There’s an exchange somewhere else on here about the lack of pockets in women’s clothing - think it was GrumpyOldGirl. Always so annoying. ☹️ I will check out the men’s version, thanks.

Some great posts here! I wear shorts with pockets when it's warm enough and leggings plus running jacket with pockets when it isn't - tissue easily accessible either way.

I have the same every time I run, it drives me crazy! It's not hay fever, it seems to be exercise related as I get it all through the year but only when I cycle or run. I use a tissue or two tucked in my bra and one in my hand. I quite like the idea of the microfibre cloth thing as it does seem to be more 'water' than full on 'snot'!

I do have to slow down for every blow and get a sore nose quite often!

Use a proper handkerchief they’re much nicer on the skin and don’t disintegrate. I tuck mine in my bra strap probably not a great look but then I am 64 years old and past caring how I look 🤣🤣🤣

I bought those running leggings and shorts from Fabletics. They are brilliant- loads of pockets! Some of them have external pockets as well as internal so you can carry tissues that are easy to get to.
