Well, I survived Parkrun in the heat, but only just. It was really a LOT warmer than any previous run I’ve had.
There was a big turn-out and everyone was in good spirits, but it was definitely tougher all round.
By the third hill I was really flagging and by the final 500 metres I started feeling dizzy. Never had that before and not fun. I had drunk plenty, but it was just too hot to be running up hills. We must be mad to do this. Just be careful if you are not running in the shade.
Not sure what time I got, but it was definitely a few seconds slower than my PB. On the plus side, my average is improving.
Home to a nice cold shower and hopefully a lazy day.
If you ran a Parkrun today, how did you find it? Looking forward to hearing more stories of self-inflicted suffering.

Give up even if you are 50 m away.. it is simply not worth it... I know it is a temptation, but we simply are not used to the sudden heat, and are unable to acclimatise to the changes... at least four of our awesome runners yesterday, taking part in major events, stopped and did not finish after dizziness and confusion became apparent.
I was at a parkrun this morning as a spectator, I showed my barcode to the race director informing her that I was there to preview of what I will be running in a fortnight, there is no run next week because of something else taking place in the park. She looks forward to seeing me then.
I spectated as well this morning AlMorr, did a consolidation run first at 8.00am. It was way too hot for PR. but a huge turnout. I think a lot of people struggled today. I was glad I wasn’t doing it 😳 hoping to do it next week. 🏃♀️🏃♀️🏃♀️🐌🐌
Yes Suebuzz, it was very warm for a full 5K Parkrun this morning, quite a few of the runners thought I was going to take part in the run as I was wearing a T shirt, shorts, the new running belt that I bought recently as well as trainers, but was NOT wearing my running cap or my brand new Brooks Glycerin 16 Running shoes or the socks to match, I will wear those in two weeks time for the big day.
All joking aside a few weeks ago I was sat in the back of an ambulance with lights and sirens going as they rushed my friend to hospital. She had been taking part in a 10k, had done more than enough training but was so badly effected by the heat she collapsed, unconscious 200m from the end. She had a temp of over 40! The weather was not as hot as today. Please please listen to your body. The brain has an amazing ability to override the warning signs but a run is not worth permanent damage. Because there was no obvious reason why she had overheated so much (apart from she's a stubborn moo ) my friend has been banned from exercise for 3 months and can only resume if accompanied by someone for a minimum of another 3 months.
I don't mean to be melodramatic but the dangers of overheating are very real xxx
Thanks, Jogun. I know it’s a serious business and I wasn’t trying to trivialise it. In fact there was a problem a couple of weeks ago when a runner needed medical attention so I am very aware of this.
Its only because we care x glad you enjoyed it and all is well.
I had to abort my Parkrun plans this morning as riding lesson brought forward to 8.30. Even then poor ponio got rather sweaty. Funnily he didn't object to the hose pipe bath today 🤣
I've got my long run to do so trying to work out when I can do it 🤷♀️ I really don't like the heat so late tonight or early early tomoz I guess. It was already 20c at 7 here today 🌡🌡🌡
Thanks. Yes, had loads to drink and feeling fine. Still pleased I did it. There could be a couple of months of this, so I want to learn how to run in the heat.
Good on you for volunteering! That means so much more when it’s a warm day like today. My mum has recently started volunteering and she’s really loving it. I make a point to say “Thanks Marshal” every time I pass one, it must mean a lot to them.
It really is a wonderful feeling when someone says thanks - not that I volunteer for the thanks, I actually love doing so, and almost enjoy it as much as running! Today, more so! 😅
Wow Stephen it was hot wasn’t it. Hope your dizzy spell soon passed. Well done you did it 👍🏼😃 I’m now contemplating a 5am start for our 7k next week 🥵😳😜
Hey you, I’ve just read your Park Run report. What a tough run in the heat today. Sorry you started feeling dizzy but thankfully you were closer to the finish line. I’m pleased you made it to post a report for us but how did you deal with the dizziness when you got to the finish line? Did you sit down? Get a drink? Seek shade?
On my park run today, I sought respite from the tree shades whenever it was available, but most of it was in the sun sadly! As soon as I crossed the finish line I was feeling rather faint, I did not even look at my token number (Parkrun text and email confirmed it was 164), I went to the clubhouse to hand in my token to be scanned and then grabbed a cold fruit shoot (apple and raspberry flavoured spring water) from the refreshments bar, that sorted me out instantly, I felt like this last week too and have been advised to keep a packet or Haribos on me for a quick fix.
Even though you are well hydrated and drinking plenty (which I have done) there may be a number of factors that may impact your run, for me it’s low blood sugar levels.
I’ll look after you for future park runs, we are in it together now 👍
There have been a lot of folk with issues over the last few days and Realfoodieclub has put another warning post out re-hydration and the heat... On other running forums too, some of our most experienced runners have had very real problems.
If you experience dizziness, blurred vision etc etc.. then you should, absolutely stop running right away. as Irish-John warned also.. you can go from feeling not too bad to something much more serious in seconds.
A run simply is not worth putting yourself at risk.
