Ok, this is a bit of a late post as I didn’t know what forum to put it on (you’ll see what I mean but I warn you, it’s a bit of a long one...). I had the most amazing running week last week and I’ve been holding back and holding back but I’ve got to say something.
Mad day 1: So, last Wednesday I went out for my usual long run. There was a road I hadn’t been down yet. I knew it was long but the weather was nice and I was curious. It took a long time...I didn’t look at my Fitbit as I was too busy concentrating on running on country roads and grass verges. I got back to near home and looked...8.5 miles 😱 My legs were feeling tired but I generally felt ok and thought...’it’s now or never’, so I took a more scenic route to get back to near my house. Smashed 10 miles! Whoop, whoop! Never been over 7 miles before...my calves were on fire and I had to wander around for quite a while to calm them down, but boy the buzz from doing it was so worth it!
Mad day 2: Saturday...parkrun day. Lovely weather, perfect for a PB I thought, but I don’t go out to do PBs, I just run and hope. Legs had mostly recovered but I had a niggly right knee. Ran round at what I thought was a fairly respectable rate, got back to the funnel, had a lovely warm handshake from a volunteer I knew and saw the scanning queues were longer than I’m used to. Saw Katnap a few people in front (he’d PB’d), looked at my watch and it was pretty obvious I was in alien territory. Official time 27:13 new PB for me too! 😱😱
Mad day 3: Sunday...I’d arranged to meet up with up with a friend to run the route of the Regency Run 10k we have coming up. We hadn’t run together before and I wasn’t sure how it would be as she’s been running much longer than me (& my knee was now more niggly). However, we plodded round, I could see she was more suited to the first 5k which was hilly and I was better on the flatter second 5k. We stop/started a few times and my knee eased off. Got to what would be the end, checked my watch and found I’d knocked 3 minutes off my 10k PB 😱😱😱
A week on from the 10 miles I’m still coming down from the shock. My knees have been proudly shot the last couple of days. I don’t recommend what I did but I think I’m getting more used to what some parts of my body are saying to me now. The niggles were all down to tight muscles and are well on the mend after lots of rest and extra stretching.
So I discussed with Katnap where to put this post, he said I should put it on the Marathon forum, but only the first one is right for the Marathon forum, the second is C25K and the third is B10K, so I’ve gone for the middle ground.
Now let’s see if I can get that 60 minute 10k on Sunday 🤔🦆🏃🏻♀️

Thanks Deals, yes it was amazing. They don’t come along too often do they?! Knees aren’t bad at all thank you. I went on a short run today and gave my calves a really good stretch which seemed to sort the worst one out 👍😀
Wowsers, loads of kudos coming your way! You’re totally on fire at the moment TC! Hope you don’t mind waiting around after our Southampton parkrun. Bring a book or something to keep you occupied until I come puffing in! 😅
😂 thanks cheeky 😂 I only go hell for leather at the home parkrun as I know what to expect and I think I’m more of a broken down, extinguished pile of soot at the mo, but it’ll come back🤞😀.
Thinking about it, actually Eldest Kitten would probably prefer to run round parkrun *with* a book!
Thank you Floss, actually I’ve got it 😁 It was one of my incentives to go past 8.5 miles. You were also inspirational in my running it 😀 I’m so pleased you’ve brought that badge in 😀🏃🏻♀️
And guess what’s playing on the radio at the moment? ‘Born to Run’ 😂
He has had his moments..he climbed a great deal when he was younger..and then I did also when we met...we were of the age; the climbing times of Joe Brown and Don Whillans.. who I was lucky ? enough to climb with in the Llanberis Pass.... J was also Officer Commanding at what was, RAF Stafford in the RAF reserve and did a great deal with and for them also...Gold assessor for D of E too! You can tell how proud I am of him can't you! xxx
Wow Floss! Your OH is amazing, no wonder you are so proud. What a pair you are! Shame you and Youngest Kitten didn’t get to chat so much, he’s doing lead climbing as part of his Bronze D of E - he’s been indoor climbing for about 2.5 years, hoping to get some outdoors in this year. He climbed at the Roaches in 2017 but the club has been a bit in flux since then so he’s not had a chance. Next time we see you you’ll have to have a natter 😀xx
Oh wow,, we climbed on the Roaches all the time.. when we were not in Wales... J was an instructor with Stanley head Outdoor Centre in his 'spare' time too... and we took loads of groups out there...literally just down the road from us
Yes, we are sort of geeing each other on at the moment. I probably wouldn’t have done the 10 miles if he hadn’t done it a couple of days earlier. Little Kitten also has a bit of pressure on him now as Katnap and I are now faster than him at parkrun 😁
That’s what the knees were telling me CP. This running lark is a bit addictive you know, just when you think it’s getting a bit mundane it comes along as does something like last week.
Yes I bet they had a good moan! I had a surprisingly long run last week, a bit above comfort but I felt good and again thought it’s now or never... it’s almost as if progression is in steps
Yes, one of my other runny friends said a while back, when I’d just graduated and was itching to break 30 minutes, that it would come all of a sudden and out of nowhere you’d be able to run further and/or quicker. She was right!!
I don’t know! I feel like I’ve used all mine up at the moment! 🤓 If we can bottle any we’ll bring it with us to Southampton 😉
It was a chicken that was wandering a bit too close to the road. I tried to shoo her back but I think she knew where she was going - she didn’t want to cross it anyway 😁
This is fantastic...what a week?! Some excellent results there...I knew when you said the queue for the scan was longer than usual that I was going to be reading about a park run PB!! Well done for than...I can’t seem to knock any time off my parkrun PB but then again I only do it now and again...but now I’ve smashed 10k, who knows?! You’ve got to be in it to win it! And then...a 10k Pb with an extra niggly knee?! You’re a real trooper!
Well done TailChaser , I want to run RIGHT NOW after reading this post, jam packed with inspiration! X
You will get that parkrun PB down, it’ll come, especially now you’ve knocked that 10k gremlin on the head. I was getting a bit bored and disenchanted with my runs and look what happened!! It just comes out of nowhere!! 🏃🏻♀️🏃♀️🏃🏻♀️🏃♀️🏃🏻♀️👊xx
