Aw bummocks!

What the flabbering bollards have I done?!

In a fit of enthusiasm / madness it appears I have signed up for a half marathon in September. Because even the less experienced runners in Good Gym did.

Baa! ๐Ÿ‘

I did manage an 11km non stop today with the last 3.5km uphill, in a sub 12min mile (7:24/km). So 10km is 1:13 now, but the HM is twice as far ๐Ÿ˜ณ

Saw a fantastic t-shirt on Facebook that said โ€˜Everything hurts and Iโ€™m dyingโ€™.

Think I might need it! ๐Ÿ˜ฌ

My daughter has done so recently.... her first half marathon ... the London Vitality Big Half M in a couple of weeks .... never thought it could happen but two years post-kidney transplant she is there with her training...... we are blessed! She was home for half term this week and did her twelve mile training run whoop whoop!!!!! We were race support crew ๐Ÿ˜€๐Ÿ˜€๐Ÿ˜€๐Ÿ˜€

Equi you are so ready for this.... time to just believe!

Equi-geek profile image
Equi-geekGraduate10 in reply to Millsie-J

Wow, really! After a kidney transplant? Puts everything into perspective doesnโ€™t it?! Huge hugs and ๐Ÿคž for the London Vitality. Sheโ€™s already a winner though with that training distance!

She has always been stoic and embraces life to the full. She is fund raising for a cancer related charity because of family circumstancies.

Just continue as you have Equi, build slowly, look after your body, have confidence in you, you have this for sure! โค๏ธ

It's doing really well. Lovely group of people. I volunteer or run every week. Usually around 150 runners of all abilities and speeds. It's not an easy course, on grass and a lot is an incline. But love it. Will get to Lydiard soon hopefully. Am taking grand daughter there on Monday!

What are you like Equi? First the GSR and now a HM. You are flying and Iโ€™ve every faith in you. You are going to do this, and at least you donโ€™t have to travel as far. Good luck with the training.

mrrun profile image
mrrunGraduate10

You can do it. Focus on non-stop slow running, train well, look after yourself, thereโ€™s plenty of time. HM is a comfortable distance and always remember thatโ€™s just a regular training run towards its big brother, Full Marathon. Itโ€™s sounds way more daunting than it really is, but in reality itโ€™s just a few comfortable hours of your time ๐Ÿ˜‰.

Pete1w profile image

Congratulations on taking the plunge. I swore I would never run a half but peer pressure ( an ultra runner at work) told me "what's the worst thing that can happen"? I run the Sheffield half in April and the training has been going ok. If you can run 11k now you're gonna be fine for your event in September. Good luck and don't do what I did and try and do too much too soon and then need a month off through injury...... You're gonna be amazing ๐Ÿ˜ ๐Ÿ˜

Booking a HM with a hill at mile 11-12? What were you thinking ๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™€๏ธ........๐Ÿ˜ฑ๐Ÿ˜ฉ........only kidding! ๐Ÿ˜‚ , youโ€™ll be brilliant, you can definitely do this......if you can do 10 miles, (and you can) itโ€™s in the bag...๐Ÿ…๐Ÿ’ช

Fabulous!

I want to know I can do it before signing up BUT without signing up there's less impetus. So well done on being so brave / nutty! ๐Ÿ˜

So far I find that I can extend distance by running slowly (like barely above walk speed) just to prove to myself I can do it, and then try to do it again at a later date at a running speed.

I did 13k at the start of the month and it took me 2 hours. I did 13k yesterday and it took me 1h20m.

Now onto 15k....

As you go beyond 10k it helps to drink extra water the day before to make sure you're hydrated.

Also, to carb load effectively, take 3x as much water as the weight of carbs.

Then drink plenty of water after your run to flush out the stuff generated. I find this really aids recovery.

Happy running ๐Ÿƒ

Good advice.. I did 12K on Thursday and it took me 1 hr 40!!! I need to up my game !

14 next for me...

My excuse is loose dogs, an over enthusiastic sheepdog, who thought I was a sheep and a potential axe murderer:) xx

Good for you! Have done this so can say, "Been there, done that, got the Tshirt!". Believe me, you can do it. The feeling of the first half is incredible and the excitement of creeping up slowly from 10k too. This time last year, I had a month left before my first and I had been doing 3x5k during the week and at the weekend, 10k one Sunday, 12k the next, 15k after 2 more Sundays and then an 18k two weeks before the day. It worked although the last 2k were hard. Nothing beats the first time so go for it! :)

Equi-geek profile image
Equi-geekGraduate10 in reply to Tjcp

Thanks Tjcp! Sounds like you did the same as my prep for the GSR (10k, 12k then did the 16.1). I know that feeling of the last couple of km.
