Looks like it’s the IC for me 🙁

My leg stiffness has been getting ever worse to the extent that getting out of bed is tottery and very painful. I changed footwear and got a better reading chair, but to no effect.

My physio did say he thought it was muscular and so I continued with my usual stretch routines and found that I could walk off or run off the stiffness within about 10 minutes.

Not so last Friday when I completed my usual 3km hilly run but finished with bad leg pains. I went back to the physio who now thinks it’s my lower back and recommends an MRI.

I get back to the UK this weekend and am going for a second opinion with a trusted osteopath. In the meantime, nothing more than a morning walk (which is difficult).

I have no idea of the procedure for getting an MRI and am so worried that it could be a vertebra/cushion problem.

Running really does mean a lot to me.

Thanks Alisonx. Every day I’m on the IC I can feel the fitness levels dropping and weight piling on!! Hey, I’ve only missed a couple of runs!!

I know just what you mean - I am struggling on with a sore hip. But I agree with you that even missing one run makes you feel down (although it is not that desperate really) and I also can feel the weight piling on. Also the running fills in the days - it is boredom that often makes me turn to the chocolate!!! Unbelievable how you go from no real exercise in your adult life to becoming a running nerd - (although in my case a very slow one).

Hope it is not too bad - and you get pain free running again soon!!!

Sorry to hear your joining the IC Heavyfoot. I'm there too at the moment, but working on my recovery.

I was interested to see you had been doing walk/sprint intervals and hill work before your problems began. My Achilles problem occurred after a month of running using the run/walk method and very long walks on non-running days. I noticed an increase in my running pace, however the extra strain may have caused the muscle fatigue...maybe, maybe not. It's my first running injury after more than four years.

I hope the problem with your back can be helped easily, and wondered if the extra strain from faster running has contributed.

Thanks Bbr. The problems started well before the walk-sprint experiment but I had just put the pains down to Anno Domini and could run them off during the Toxic Ten.

I hope your recovery goes well. Perhaps a special forum for IC dwellers?😁

So sorry about your injury HeavyFoot, I just hope the experts can get you back to running ASAP, in the meantime just rest and read all the posts from everyone else here on Bridge to 10k/C25K and other posts on Healthunlocked.

Thanks HeavyFoot, report No. 1, this morning I ran a 5K, not at PB, time was 33.21, not as fast as on Saturday at parkrun when it was 32.31, with all the rain ☔ there has been, I had to avoid a lot of puddles, so I was 90 seconds slower than on Saturday at parkrun, I had my metromone app at 172 steps/cadence a minute, next Wednesday I will set it at 176 steps and see what time I'll get. 😊 🏃🏾

Diagnosis is the first part of the road back, so getting that MRI is a step forwards. Fingers crossed that it’s something and nothing... could just need some extra strengthening work, but they’ll point you in the right direction.
