The sculpture above is by the Italian Futurist artist, Umberto Boccioni. It is called ‘Unique Forms of Continuity in Space’ and was made in 1913; the figure is aerodynamically deformed by speed.
I saw this in the Tate at least 25 years ago and it made an impression then. I was an art student and remember standing in front of it, sketching the shapes into my notebook.
I look at it now with different eyes. Runner’s eyes!
I ran an easyish 5k today. It wasn’t quite conversational at times, but it wasn’t really hard work. I ran without stopping and even danced on the dot when someone wanted directions... the first km I went out a bit too fast at 6’19”, but then went 6’36”, 6’36”, 6’30”, 6’21”. I didn’t check the times at all when running and had felt I was going slower, so was pleased to see not only negative splits but I was only 1 second slower than the Park Run last weekend. I’m not getting faster, but it’s feeling easier.
Consolidation continues...
