Not been running much at all since Christmas due to illness, however ran 2 x 3 miles lately and felt ok. Before my illness, I entered a 10 mile run which is now just two weeks away, should I try to increase my training to do this run, or am I being unwise to even attempt this 10 mile run? Advice please.
Should I give it a go?: Not been running much... - Bridge to 10K
Should I give it a go?
Can't help sorry, but glad you're back out there and feeling ok 😊
Maybe just try a longer run and see how you feel?
There's not much you can do in two weeks tbh and if you'd been training for this distance you would have a period of tapering in the last few weeks anyway so I'd suggest this isn't your time for this one.
However. Have you run this distance before? How many times? If you have run it a few times previously in the last few months then you might get away with it. You can always walk some if you need to. Personally, I wouldn't do it but would book another one to aim for because at the end of the day it's only a race and there will be others. But only you can make the decision for your body.
Thanks for your reply. I have run 10miles on a few runs before Christmas but am not sure what to do myself. Problem is my friend only signed up for this because I did. There is no pressure from her though for me to run it, but I do feel I’m letting her down.
That's a hard one then. Presumably you've talked to her about it. What does she say? Maybe go with her and do a run/walk but explain to her you might have to bail out at some point but you'll be there at the finish line for her.
Or, be with her at the start and finish lines as a supporter this time not a runner.
Good luck whatever you decide.
Sorry I don't know either.... Keep us posted
Agree with the other posters, that 2 weeks is the taper period now. So any long runs won't make a difference for that particular race. Can u defer the race ? Also what's the time limit to complete? You could just run /walk it with a bit of jeffing and just enjoy it. I've got the Brighton HM in 2 weeks, I'm a 100% not ready. I've decided to run walk it. As long as I finish alive and under 3 hours, I'm happy with that! I just want the bling and I'm doing a charity thing as well 😀
Good luck with your run and thanks for your advice, I will look at the time allowed for the race too.
I was thinking of pulling out as I'm not ready. But after looking at the cut off time I'm less worried. Also I checked the results from last year 100s of finishers were between 2.45 and 3.30 hours so I won't be alone.! Just for info, a friend of mine who was my inspiration to sign up, has done no training apart from 1 parkrun. Im watching with interest to see how he gets on. I think he will get round, afterwards though.....hes going be suffering. 😭 i wonder how many people don't do enough training? A lot I should think.
My son is a case in point! we are doing a half in March - first hl for both of us. He has done one 19km run and an odd 3 or 4km run, maybe every other week or two. I bet he gets away with it, and beats me bu=y a country mile (or six). It's just not fair!
Poor you, what a dilemma! I did my first 10 mile race after a period of illness. I had almost run the distance a couple of times in the weeks before getting ill. I thought I was better (though with hindsight I possibly wasn't as better as I thought), I did the race and pretty much hated it. I got a better time than I'd hoped, even though I walked some, but I felt awful and there was no runner's high. lots of reasons for that which won't apply to you I'm sure (not leas cos you're running with a friend). But I would caution two things if you decide to run/walk: 1. set clear in your mind that that is what you are going to do so you aren't disappointed at the end and 2. keep a very good eye on your pace because it is SO easy to get carried away in the race situation (I honestly thought I was smart enough not too .. pah!). Don't feel pressured, and don't get carried away. Good luck whatever you decide
Aw thanks Linda, I think I’m deciding against doing it as I don’t want to relapse in my illness, that’s my current thoughts. I will go and support my friend in doing it.
I think the answer is to try a few longer distances and see how you feel then, and if in doubt maybe not do it.
