Hi there and welcome to the New Quest for this month!
January Jaunt!
This is the first Quest of this New Year and it is going to be fantastic!
The weather can be challenging, but let's rise to those challenges and set some exciting goals for this new month
What the Quest is;
The Quest takes one month . You can join any time, within those weeks.
The main aim of the Quest is to help you find a focus or goal that you would like to achieve by the end of the Quest period.
I ask that you will be a Graduate to join the Quest. The main reason I ask this is that while you are doing the programme, your plan is very structured so I wouldn't want the Quest to interfere with that.
Most popular goals are:-
To run three times a week
To slowly increase distance
To train for a specific race
To add In Stretch and Strength exercises
As you can see they are personal to yourself and it's totally your own choice.
This is a personal challenge, so it's completely up to you! If you want to join, all you have to do is comment below with something like:
I would like to join the Quest, or, count me in! I want to ..............
Each week, I will pin a new post where all the members of the quest can talk about how things are going.
At the end of the Quest, there will be a certificate that you can download to keep.
Wishing you a Happy Healthy week

Hello Oldfloss and happy new year. I’ve been ill and need to get back to running big time as my mental health is suffering. I have entered a race the end of Feb, it’s 10 miles long and this is achievable as I was running this before my illness. I need help and encouragement to get my running shoes back on.
Happy New Year to you! Well done for beginning this...
Many many of us have suffered and do suffer with mental heath issues... This running lark is brilliant for supporting our efforts to get back on track.
What a goal!!!
But I feel sure you will do this... and we are all here to run with you... my own goal is to achieve my first HM in March... ( in the throes of the training plan as we speak!).
So.... we can run together and the first step is to pick up those running shoes and watch that Black Dog start slinking away....let's do this !!!!
Go you... a run already and heading out on this New Quest... it's exciting isn't it... a while month of new running adventures... we will all keep each other going! xxx
Hi OF, yes please, count me in! As well as joining in with the Magic 10 again and running 3-4 times a week, I’ve decided once and for all to nail hills. I know I can do them, I never walk, but I do slow down significantly. So I’m going to use my local parkrun routes more and utilise their hills to gain more fitness. 💪
I’ve entered 3 x 10k races this year so far and they’re my goal. I foresee an exciting year of running in 2019 for us all! 😀🏃♀️🏃♂️🙌
Count me in please OF after piriformis issues late last year, I’m back to running 3 times weekly, doing my stretches and planks and have just started week 2 of my journey to 10k. Very excited! X
Great idea! I would like to join the Quest, or, count me in! I want to run three times a week. It looks like a matter of course, but it is not (due to weather). I do not know what awaits me in January and in February.
This is my goal. It looks small, but it is not. I do not want to get into the winter. Never
Lovely to see you here..you are really up against the weather..sometimes what appear to be small challenges prove to be the most difficult. We will all do this...together!!!
Hello Oldfloss, I’ve restarted the magic plan to get me running 3 times a week again and give me some focus. Parkrun continues to be my favourite run of the week, and it fits in with the programme.
The weather will no doubt play it’s part this month but there’s always the dreadmill. 😱
Brilliant...well done you..I've done Magic 10 three times...it is terrific for getting us back on course...We'll do this..and if there's ice..we will do it indoors..Yes!!!
Hi Oldfloss, Happy New Year. Not sure where to start with my quest. November and my life changed, black dog and his formidable companion anxiety took over. This has been the darkest, loneliest time I've ever experienced.
I am pleased to say that although still a way to go after 7 weeks of torment there is light getting in which has given me some strength to fight. I knew running would help but anxiety is a pretty powerful beast that kept the door guarded well.
I have beaten this and run a couple of times now and will continue to fight by setting a challenge of running at least three times a week. Distance, time are irrelevant, reclaiming my life is the goal.
I feel that rejoining the forum is a step in the right direction.
Massive well done you.... we can outrun the Black and the Grey Dogs....and between us we will send them packing with their tail between their legs... keep posting...
Happy New Year..it will be.. you're here, amongst friends xx
Lorijay as part of the quest I would like to be your virtual running friend, if ok with you. I’m off out again on Wednesday and do Saturdays, and Mondays too. What do you do? Your choice, won’t be offended if you don’t want to, now worries. 🌻
Thank you Gran4z, that is so kind of you and yes any help to beat this is gratefully accepted. I will pm you if that's ok so I don't impose on this thread/topic.
I found your Post very moving and I want to wish you well, wish you power and wish you out there running to ' reclaim your life' whilst joining all of us wherever we are in our running adventures.x
Good morning, Floss, and HNY to you! I would like to join, please!
I've signed up to JuJu's 10 is the magic number, but basically I'd like to get back into running regularly. Goals therefore are to run twice a week for this Quest and to be comfortable running 7k by the end of the month. It might be slow, but that'll do me!
Happy New Year my friend! These are great goals.. I find Ju's plan super.. have done it three times now to get me back on track after illness or injury!!
You know how I feel about slow...perfect... you've got this!! xxx
1) Lose 1.25kgs - which sounds a lot but it is from what I hope is a blippy high (I could easily lose 1kg of that overnight)
2) Complete (belatedly) all the activities from the Virtual Racing Fitness Advent Calendar (too many to list here but they range from 8 glasses of water to saying something positive to another person to star jumps)
3) RED January (after a fashion, I've not even opened the pack yet... plan is for *activity* every day. I am definitely counting vacuuming and yoga, and probably counting lifting of aged parent if desperate!)
4) 20km total running, just to make sure it stays on the agenda
5) Yoga practice on 16+ days
6) Setting a new longer term swimming goal - which means organising a new way of logging. And then making a start on it...
I am trying to pop a little weight on... ! And I am certainly counting my two days with small runner in training as exercise for Red January, walking and lifting up....and racing around after her in the fields....my T shirt has not arrived yet!!!
You are so determined I am sure you will do his... keep posting please!
* to get back to running 3 days per week and back onto my HM plan after a holiday stint kiboshed my running over Christmas break. I should be up to 18k for my long run by the end of the month if all goes to plan, but I am finding winter running a huge challenge this year due to so much ice 😖. For some reason, I always make it my goal to run a HM distance in my winter training, get to 16 k and can't/don't carry on. My goal this year is to try and reach it by the beginning of March (I won't reach it in time to do the Hypothermic Half 😢 but I'm so concerned with making running a chore and taking away the joy by forcing myself to do long runs on the treadmill or having to run in nasty weather that I haven't committed to the Hypothermic half once again - that and the entrance fee is absurd! You get a camelbak hydration pack this year, but with my lovely new Salomon vest, I didn't need it). I'm also going to continue to encourage hubby to come out and run with me on my mid length runs. He's not able/willing to run those distances, but we can run a couple km together, then I can carry on to do another loop or 2 to reach my distances. It just means keeping these runs near home, but it'll be worth it if he can hit the trails with me a bit this summer.
* to focus on my core during my crosstraining activities this month. I was surprised how sore my QL was after snowmobiling for 2 days. We skied for 2 days prior to that and legs/body felt great, but then after 2 days and 250km on my machine, a good portion through windy forested trail, my lower back was screaming at me. I have found some good stretches, and ran 2 mid length runs since coming home and it is on the mend but it is a huge reminder that perhaps my core isn't as strong as it could be/should be.
Those are great goals.. and some really challenging conditions...brrrr... You are going to get there... even snowdrifts and freezing temperatures do not stop you!!!
Dear Oldfloss, my first goal this week is to get my husband accepted in a daycare somewhere so I have time to think. My second goal is to run more with my dog. This is interval running because he has to stop to pee and poop! <3 <3 <3
Well done on this.... that will be a great goal if you are able to get just a little free time for yourself...Running with the dog.. perfect... and intervals.. even better! Please stay strong and keep posting in the Quest!
It's crazy isn't it? I have two excellent siblings (my Dad no longer regrets that none of his offspring have conventional full time paid work) and a mother who can do some stuff but we were awarded 4 care visits a day this week for my Dad and I am almost hysterical with relief.
I find the 5 minutes warm up walk is really useful with a dog as Google usually obliges in that time... and if we're doing on-lead running, she now understands that's different to a 'loadsa-sniffing, loadsa-peeing' stroll
Hi, GoogleMe! You must be in Great Britain. I'm in the States and have not yet actually gone in yet--too many things to do. I found out the care will be almost $100 for 4 hours, which is astronomical to me especially considering that I'm trying to conserve funds for his eventual(?) institutional intake somewhere if/when needed.
Our dog runs when he feels like it, but has stopping off "important/essential" sniff 'n' pee points which brings me to a screeching halt and gives me a chance to catch my breath. Since these walks only total 1 mile a day, I'm trying to run during all of them, but sometimes it's nice to just stroll--like in the home stretch "cooldown."
Thanks, Oldfloss! Holding onto the string!!! You gave me the idea of running with the dog and he's acclimated to it well, albeit an 8-yr-old black lab. I think he knows the word, "run" now! Thanks to you, I am still in this running community.
We are in the 'privileged' position of dealing with terminal cancer cf other disabilities and conditions which means we are getting so much funded and some of the gaps are being filled by wonderful local charities.
Hi OF, count me in too please. I want to continue training for the Brighton Half Marathon, and I would like to ‘virtually’ support Lorijay too - we can run together in our virtual world. I will check in with her 🌻
Hi Oldfloss, count me in please, i have started JuJu’s Magic 10k plan again and will hopefully pluck up the confidence to do my first ever park run! Happy New Year!
I did enjoy the pink run 😃 mainly because it was miles away from where I lived so felt incognito 😎 but I’m going to give park run a go I have had my barcode thing for about 3 years ... I hope it doesn’t become obsolete after a certain time 😂😂
Those are great goals!!!! You are most welcome!!! And... Yes... the running shoes they are essential!!!!! Next to you...they are your best asset!!!
Happy New Year Questors,
My January quest is to enjoy myself. I plan to run 2 or 3 times a week, one 5km, one longer run and one "other". I want to do at least 2 of my core strength and Pilates classes. I love the teachers and the classes are fun. I plan to enjoy sunny, frosty runs and I am not putting any pressure on myself to do hills or 10kms or speedwork. I also plan to play with my Xmas present watch.
Love your Quest goal Paula, I've been trying to think what my quest for January will be and I may take my lead from you and go for enjoying myself!😊...a run tomorrow, then I will have a think and sign up....xx
I’m hoping to progress on 3 fronts again🤪, i.e. increase longest run to 15k, run 12k at GSR race pace (6’00”/k or better) and do 5k on the dreadmill including 2 separate Ks @ 13 kph. But I ‘m starting with a week off to get shot of a matched pair of calf niggles ...... ☹️
And I think I’ll be happy to achieve one of them 🙃
Please may I join in the January Jaunt Quest.. a little late😆
I wasn't sure what my goals where for January, and I do like to join the Quest, so having read through everyone's plans for inspiration it was Paulanoo's goal to enjoy herself with no pressure to achieve that matched how I'm feeling this month.
So, I am planning on enjoying my runs hoping to manage twice a week. I have entered a 5k virtual race for January on Strava so will make one of my runs a 'race' so I can get that trophy, and I have also entered the Strava run a 10k in January, but I will be making that a fun 10k with some walk breaks rather than trying to get a PB.
I am just back from a 5k run in the beautiful luke warm sunshine with glorious blue skies and the breeze at my heels. Its only Tuesday, so another run looks likely later in the week...
Also looking into joining a beginners pilates class this month...
Happy Questing everyone, and Paulanoo will enjoy comparing notes with you!
Today was enjoying the tree branches stretching out and silhouetted against the bright blue sky. First little bit was cold and hard to catch my breath, and I wondered if I would need a breather at the halfway mark. But by then I felt so relaxed and alive I didn't need to stop running at all... Happy with that.😊xx
Hi BB, lovely run. I did a 5km at lunchtime and I was thinking of what the enjoyment was. Like you, i was looking at bits of blue sky through the very bare branches of trees. The birds think that it's springtime so they were chirping like mad. Oh, I hope you find a nice Pilates class. I have a small class (6 people) with a physiotherapist as the teacher and it's really effective. So I recommend trying to find a small class. Good luck with your second run.
That sounds like a perfect goal... enjoyment.. runs.. no pressure... winter sunshine and cold crisp air... lovely stuff....Happy Running my friend and do keep posting your runs xx
PS
There is a small group Pilates class here... at one of the village halls... but too far for you, wishful thinking on my part 😉xxxx
Thank you Floss. I will post some runs I promise..
I have the chance of a new pilates group in our local village hall, or an old school friend of my daughter is now a pilates instructor and I may go to her with my hubby too.. he has expressed an interest, will see if I can get him to come..😆
Hi Floss - count me in. I'm aiming to run at least three times a week - working on improving my pace a bit and run another 10k before the month is out.
And I'm hoping joining the Quest will ensure I visit the forum at least once a week - even when work gets on top of me.
Sounds great to me.. even though your pace is pretty fantastic now!!! It is good to drop in to the forum.. I was delighted to have the Bridge Quest this month as I miss dropping in too!!! xx
Hi Oldfloss, it’s taken a few days to build myself up to posting this as it’s not a particularly nice subject, but I’ve just come back from a lovely 10k and am having a bit of a glow.
My first quest of 2019 is simply to sort my flippin’ pelvic floor out, it’s driving me...er...potty...! Last week’s attempt at a 10k was the final straw. I’ve dabbled here and there to sort it as there is no rhyme or reason as to when it fails me (e.g. it never happened at all whilst I was doing C25K), but the routines I’ve tried usually caused more problems, usually, I suspect, from over-doing it which has put me off.
So, thanks to a thread on this wonderful forum, I have downloaded ‘Squeezy’ the NHS app suggested by Neelie13 & your ‘penny in the buttocks’ suggestion Oldfloss (😆). So far so good and I have to say (<touch wood>, fingers crossed, and any other way of not spoiling it!) after 5 days there does seem an improvement.
So 6k on Monday and 10k today, not sure how rest of month will pan out. But my routine is to each week do extra core exercises afterwards, yoga and gym in between and of course my beloved Parkrun on Saturdays. Squeezy is 3 times a day, each day, whatever I’m doing, no excuses. I *will* sort this!
You will go you... these issues need airing and addressing xxx
You are sorting this and maybe, now... feeling more at ease with everything is going to help too...slow and steady as ever...and a great 10K tucked away... Winning combination! x
I’m being good! I’d like to run a 5 mile... but the ankle still needs some TLC... no speed sessions for me until March, I think February will be all 5k or thereabouts and gentle. Equinox will be close then, and that would give me 6 months to be ready for equinox 24, which I’m not sure is doable, so that is going on the back burner for another year I think.
A .. ( gulp )... sensible plan. It is hard...The running teaches us so much about patience... But... the runs, whatever they may be, will wait and be ready... until we are ready for them x
Yeah... and we are in the early stages of forming an 8... so I’m not committed to that day... sadly it’s only annual, so I may be doing that next year, which will mean no autumn marathon until 2021... but it’s good to plan ahead 😂
It is a pain...and can be upsetting...but... we are our best asset... we have to nurture ourselves...because running is not the only thing in our lives... ( although it is pretty darned awesome) xxx
I think my HM in March is gonna be enough.... and I have got a super 10K in September which I have tried to get on for the last to years... I managed it this time!!! RAF Cosford... Spitfire Run!!! Snail on Speed!!!
Spitfire run sounds great... we had a car park fenced off where I used to work because of the cadmium and nasty stuff from the spitfire development and production... never had a runway there though 😂
I have wanted to do it for so long.. we all run and carry the name of a pilot was lost in the Air..something that will mean a lot to me. And 10 k I will enjoy The HM... not sure... a lot of folk....and mainly flat.... that is going to be the hardest bit for me...hence trying Park Runs for the first time!
I have done my first... I was traumatised..280 folk...but my Son in Law stayed with me...! I did not go last week.. took me a few days to calm down... !! But.. I am heading back again on Saturday... it is the fairly new Isabel Park run in Stafford... only the 6th PR there which is this week The run is pleasant.. if a tad narrow and the flatness just unnerved me ....and the people!!! But.. I will get there.. slow and steady!!!
My goal is to run 3 times a week. Hubby has started C25k again from the beginning so we are running together, with Squiggy of course! We have managed two runs this week and the third will be on Saturday, so going well so far. I am running slowly but continuously and he is doing the intervals - just as well otherwise I wouldn't see much of him with his long legs
What a lot of replies to this post. Best of luck to everyone giving the quest a go.
RED January is in full swing now and I must admit I am loving it, starting the year off feeling strong. I need to carry on as I have a 2.5km swim in March and a HM in May, so this is my heaviest training season and I need to be up for it.
A great, positive start to the yea,Rfc... I am enjoying Red January too...although my own Black Dog showed his face today... until I outran him up a hill!
You have got to get ready for those targets and you will do it!!!
Oh I so wanted to join this month's quest but I really am struggling with this chest infection and asthma. I'll try and join later in the month if I'm fit to run.
My quest for January is to run at least one 5k per week. If this doesn’t seem much of a challenge I’m hindered by the dark mornings & nights with work in between!! I’ll step it up again when it’s possible to run more than just weekends.
Please may I join? My main goal is ‘hills’. I’ve entered the Longleat 10k on 3rd Feb and I’m told it’s very hilly 😱. I’m also in training for my first half in March. I’m up to 10 miles so training is going well.. Good luck everyone. Some very inspirational goals 💗..
Hi Goalies.....I have committed myself to JuJu's plan for a third time, which in turn will give me the impetus to try and reach a 30 minute 5k That's my goal.Eek I've said it now!
