Hi there and welcome to the New Quest for this month!
January Jaunt!
My photograph says it all...and as for the rain...well it's just wet... and it seems there are umbrellas for runners
This is the first Quest of this New Year and it is going to be fantastic!
The weather can be challenging, but let's rise to those challenges and set some exciting goals for this new month
What the Quest is;
The Quest takes one month . You can join any time, within those weeks.
The main aim of the Quest is to help you find a focus or goal that you would like to achieve by the end of the Quest period.
I ask that you will be a Graduate to join the Quest. The main reason I ask this is that while you are doing the programme, your plan is very structured so I wouldn't want the Quest to interfere with that.
Most popular goals are:-
To run three times a week
To slowly increase distance
To train for a specific race
To add In Stretch and Strength exercises
As you can see they are personal to yourself and it's totally your own choice.
This is a personal challenge, so it's completely up to you! If you want to join, all you have to do is comment below with something like:
I would like to join the Quest, or, count me in! I want to ..............
Each week, I will pin a new post where all the members of the quest can talk about how things are going.
At the end of the Quest, there will be a certificate that you can download to keep.
Wishing you a Happy Healthy week

Dear Oldfloss, I've been running every day, but I took Sunday off--I thought I deserved a rest and we just walked. My pledge is to try to continue this "running with the dog" business. The dog seems to like it, taking off at a burst of speed one morning this past week. Of course, the problem is that he stops abruptly to smell, pee, or poop.... I continue to do two half mile walk/runs with him per day.... Thanks for the "run with the dog" suggestion you made--because I tried it and it kept me in this community.
P.S. I like the umbrella! I need one for the rainy season in a few months. Think of me running in the rain with the dog and an umbrella? I don't think so! Right now it's too cold for rain and oddly enough, we've only had one snowfall this winter. It's a really warm winter for us though....
This is such good news... You are doing wonderfully and hopefully feeling the benefit? The dog is clearly enjoying it too !! Hold fast and keep on with those runs... xxxxx
I'm feeling generally well. Also, I did get hubby signed up this morning for a weekly visit at the "senior" (moments) center... Yay! That will give him a "spa" bath as well as some opportunity for engaging in conversation. It looks like a far nicer place than I anticipated which pleases me. Thanks for being a leader on HealthUnlocked. <--- That is much appreciated!
Hi Floss, sorry its so been so wet where you are! I hope it improves for this weeks runs. Not sure that umbrella hat is a good or workable look.... π
I have written a post about a couple of my Jaunts last week and received loads of really great replies, and I am hoping to continue looking for the positives this week along with lots of other folk, who also loved Paulanoo's idea of a 'run for fun only' month....
I managed two runs of 5k last week and squeezed a shorter run in on Sunday afternoon. It was grey and had been raining and I had been um-ming and aah-ing, then hubby said just go, you will feel better afterwards...so I did. A little no pressure 3k.
The positives were I didn't fall when I caught my foot on a bramble, avoiding a little westie on a flexi-lead, it was just before dark and the houses all looked cozy.... It was nice stopping at 3k and finishing with a sprint. I passed and said hello to two other runners too.(coming the other way...I didnt actually overtake another runnerπ)
A couple of nice walks too meant my week was quite active.
Pencilling a run in for tomorrow...might be longish...π
You have had a great time... and i got around to answering your post too!!! What am I like!!!
The runs and the walks you are doing at the moment, sound just right.. lots to see... and no pressure... I am going to take a leaf from your book and just relax into my runs...
I hope the longish run goes well... if you do it... mine will be at the weekend I think!!!
Hello Oldfloss, My quest for January is get back to 3 runs a week after a few disruptions and a lot of chocolate.
I ran with UpTheStanley this morning for the first time this year. My main purpose being to slow the boy down!!!! I am back on the magic plan this month so I now have something to aim for again. Looking at 10k races but not yet committed.
Great goals there...with or without chocolate.... I love Magic Plan... done it three times Happy running both xxx
My quest is to enjoy my runs and activities. I had 2 nice runs with twittering birds and blue bits of sky this week. I havenβt started my classes yet. Pilates teacher is on honeymoon and I didnβt get to my strength classes because I was away. Didnβt get a long run in either as I went out with my sisters to eat and see βthe favouriteβ. Iβm loving reading all the positive posts. Planning a long run tomorrow (see you out there bluebird) and a return to class fun.
I'm running three times a week, and I'm doing park run on Saturdays. My goal of doing that in under 35minutes is getting closer, down to 35.30 last week.
My other goal has emerged this week, I'm going to see if I can get to run 10k. I'm following JuJu's magic 10 plan. I managed 6k this morning, slow and steady. And I got back before it rained too!
No targets achieved yet, but at least Iβve now gone beyond 5k for the first time since Christmas. Paced by Dexy to 6k in 43 mins, then 4 on my own in another 22.
And though Iβm highly sceptical about magic gear, a pair of compression socks did seem to help my calf issues π. Onward and upward!
I have just completed the first week of Ju Juβs magic plan so am aiming to start week 2 on Wednesday! Love the umbrella βοΈ what will they think of next π hope you have a happy healthy week too.
My quest this week is to hopefully to complete the 7k of the magic plan. Did the short run yesterday, but with 60kph winds last night and only slightly less today, it may have to wait for a little longer. Would love the umbrella hat, but fear I may be doing my Mary Poppins impression. π€
Still on Red January, I was really pleased last week as I actually got a 1km swim in so my training plan for 2.5km in March is on course also ticked off two more of my Runkeeper HM training plan along with weights, indoor bike,Nordic Walking and a couple of strolls. So far the change of thyroid meds is a thumbs up, I feel strong. Have a good week all and good luck with your long run Oldfloss. Rfc xxx
I still have two runs of Ju's plan to fit in this week - eek! but I have to take my car in to the garage tomorrow, so that accounts for one of them quite nicely Things may be looking up...
Sounds like you had a good week Getfitok, and managed to run twice and do some heavy lifting as well as your strength and flex.π
Definitely not failing your goals...we all just try to do our best, sometimes its just not possible to do it all...There is always the next week though!
Happy Questing πxx
Sorry to hear you're not sleeping well at the moment.x
Had a great week last week - 3 runs, a strength training session and swimming at the pool another day. Ran my longest run to date -16.3k so getting closer to the HM. Unfortunately ended up in the ER on Sunday night with severely intense lower abdominal pain. I was concerned it was my appendix, but the pain passed and they figure I had a kidney stone. Still feeling some weird twinges but no intense pain. Unfortunately it has thrown my week off a bit - I haven't done any exercise yet since Sunday's run, but am planning on doing something tonight (hopefully a run with hubby). I am working this weekend so this is sort of a recovery week for me, I guess.
Thanks for the concern Floss. I had initially thought I was just cramping a bit due to dehydration until the sharp pain hit. The back pain and sharp abdominal pain is gone now but my bladder is rebelling a bit and reminding I'm not quite back to normal. I've decided to skip my run today (and likely for the week). If things don't feel better soon, I'll be visiting my GP.
They were basing it on the severity of the pain, the way the pain presented, radiated down into my groin then went away. They talked about a CT but didn't want to call in someone or expose me to the extra radiation given I was very comfortable by the time they got to me (and it was well after midnight) but told me to come back if the pain returned and then diagnostics would be necessary. I've been feeling ok but am getting uncomfortable again today but moreso in the bladder and lower pelvic region and have never had to pee so much. I haven't seen a stone pass yet so suspect it may still be in my bladder but if I don't feel better soon I'll try to get in to see my regular doc. There's no running for now. Running to the bathroom as often as I did today was enough for me βΉοΈ
All sounding positive there...mostly for you anyway! Jump about exercises I find a tad daunting... RED January is fun isn't it... although I am counting my two days with small runner in training as really hard workout days!
Go you...I hope the kilo goes and the shoulders ease x
Well, my quest to run 3 times a week didn't get off to a very good start! I ran twice last week (with hubby who has started C25k again). Unfortunately on the second run Squiggy smelt, then saw a cat, pulled sharply forward and continued pulling very hard until we went past the cat (who had made a quick exit into the bushes!). The next day I could hardly move - my lower back (where the harness goes) was extremely sore I am dosing up and doing gentle stretching and walking. It is very annoying. Hopefully we can get going again in a few days but perhaps with Squiggy running loose!
Having only just graduated today can I join in. Mine is to consolidate for 2 weeks, during those 2 weeks to run a parkrun. Probably a week Saturday. Also to continue with the programme at the gym my personal trainer has set me twice a week, for core and strength.
You can with pleasure.. good goals and the plan to take it steady and consolidate is a good one! All too easy to forget how important it is to keep the strength and stamina going alongside the running...I am always going on about it in the C25K forum! ! Well done you!
I would like to join the quest.... I am training for the Blood Axe Challenge and want to run three times a week. Am returning to the groups after a long time due to other stuff, and have managed to keep running, but not as often as I would like.......
Count me in. My target for January is to complete a 50 mile RaceAtYouPace challenge, thatβs about 80k. I am currently at 45k for the month so far, so it should just be achievable.
