Hi there and welcome to the third week of the Quest...January Jaunt!
At his time of the year, certainly here in the UK, many folk are finding it hard to complete their outdoor runs ...or indeed, find the motivation to get out at all.
But...this is the first Quest of this New Year and it is going to be fantastic!
The weather can be really challenging, but let's rise to those challenges and set some exciting goals for this new month
What the Quest is;
The Quest takes one month . You can join any time, within those weeks.
The main aim of the Quest is to help you find a focus or goal that you would like to achieve by the end of the Quest period.
I ask that you will be a Graduate to join the Quest. The main reason I ask this is that while you are doing the programme, your plan is very structured so I wouldn't want the Quest to interfere with that.
Most popular goals are:-
To run three times a week
To slowly increase distance
To train for a specific race
To add In Stretch and Strength exercises
As you can see they are personal to yourself and it's totally your own choice.
This is a personal challenge, so it's completely up to you! If you want to join, all you have to do is comment below with something like:
I would like to join the Quest, or, count me in! I want to ..............
Each week, I will pin a new post where all the members of the Quest can talk about how things are going.
At the end of the Quest, there will be a certificate that you can download to keep.
Wishing you a Happy Healthy week

Last week was a right off after my emergency room stint. My lower abdomen/pelvis was unhappy with any jostling so walking was uncomfortable, let alone running. I had my ultrasound today and am finally feeling a little bit better so am hoping for a short little tootle on the treadmill like Razouski did last week (but a lot slower π). In reality it may just be a brisk walk, but I'm getting quite grouchy πΏ so it is time to do something for me again. Fingers crossed I'm back on track this week.
Thanks Raz. It's been such a crazy day at work after a really busy weekend on call so I'll likely just try a brisk walk instead. I'm not going to push anything, that's for sure.
Sorry to hear you're still barking like a dog. That's not fun. Good on you for getting 15 minutes in though.
Hi Allie, I have been wondering how you got on at the doctors. Understandably you are frustrated, take things gently so you can get fully better though... brisk walking is fine as long as it's comfortable to do so.
Thanks Jan. I'll be taking it easy, I just really need to get some endorphins going. This girl is getting so grumpy without being able to exercise. It is amazing how a good run can lift the spirit and make the world an easier place to be in.
Oh Saskie, I didnβt know that you had hurt yourself. I need to find your post about it. I hope you get out for a wintry walk. Soft snow, trees, sunshine. Walk fast and breathe deep. And feel good. Hugs π€
Thanks paulanoo. I didn't put a full post up about it; I think it was just in last week's January jaunt. I ended up in emerg due to a sudden and severe lower abdominal pain. They figured it was a kidney stone but didn't do any imaging that night because I was more comfortable by the time I saw the docs (and it was late so it wasn't warranted to call the tech in to do the imaging). Fortunately the severe pain is gone, and the residual discomfort is getting better every day. I should be back at it soon, I hope. I'm just not pushing anything right now.
Hi there lovely, not seen you in a while. All I can say is ouch to your problem and do take things easy. Don't go running about yet until you feel absolutely right. Take care xx
Iβm still struggling to get back to my old running self, a gastric flu got me and now I have a really bad cough, so depressing. Roll on when I can get back. Lost more weight and stamina. Goal is to get going on my pins again.
Youβve really had a difficult time. Hope youβll feel better soon. January is so difficult but Iβm sure youβll be back out there once you are well.
Well there was I feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't run to day, and you guys are all suffering more than me. I'm all tetchy because I haven't had my running fix today due to a minor muscle strain and stiff hip making running painful.
Hope all you others on this quest that are a tad slowed down will soon be back on course. Happy running
A lot of folk are having a bad time right now... and we are all here for each other... you take it steady... some long soaks in the bath and some gentle exercises....you feel better soon! xx
My quest is to get over this chest infection and do some recovery runs to get to 5k without dissolving into a fit if coughing or struggling to breathe.
Then it will be onwards and upwards again. Just wondering if the steroids will impact on my running ability πππ
Oh gosh... this is such a nuisance and so, so wearing... I really empathise..... I thought I would never get rid of the cough! Just take it as ever really gently... sending a gentle hug x
Just managed 2 runs & 1 s&f this week, but lots of moving boxes & furniture, realistically I think that I will just have to do what I can until the work on the house is finished. Good luck to everyone else.
I had a funny old week. I was preparing hard for a job interview. I got a stomach bug too. Spent the night before the interview being very ill. I did one 6km run by the sea. It was a drizzly day so there was nobody about except lots of sea birds. I did One strength class - oh that was hard. Iβm very glad that life is back to normal and I plan to run and go to classes this week. Normal service will be resumed π
Well done on your seaside jaunt, thats a good distance in the rain...πI was thinking of you on my run, but was luckier with the weather (no sea views thoughπ)
Thanks BB. I just did a rainy lunchtime run. I did a headspace thank you run because even though I didnβt get the job, I have lots to be thankful for. I feel much better π
I'm sorry about the job but clearly there is something better waiting. I'm glad the lunchtime run gave you enjoyment and peace of mind. Big hugs my friend π€
Well like many others last week was largely spent resting and getting over a heavy cold. Managed to get 1 short slow run in on Friday. Now for real focus to be ready for the Cancer Research UK 10K Winter run on 3rd Feb. Brrrr!
Iβm feeling lucky that I am still healthy and injury free, and continuing my 3 runs a week on jujuβs plan.
I am enjoying it more this time around, probably because I know itβs possible. I am now also running on my own on the long runs, as UTS contends with niggles moving from calves to Achilles. I will convince him to see a physio eventually.
I hope all those suffering ill health at the moment will be up and running soon. π
Hi Oldfloss. Well I am making progress albeit slowly. Running is providing with me respite and is my go to safe feeling place. Because of this I have started running everyday but only 5k, slow and mindful.
I remain very thankful for this forum and great vrb's.
I am okay thanks.. despite the weather's best efforts to keep me from my runs... ! You are doing wonderfully.. and it is good to know that it is working well for you...You take care xxxx
Iβll be back in the U.K. in 3 weeks taking care of my mum and brother so hopefully Iβll be able to squeeze in a few runs and avoid the lurgy that most of you seem to have at the moment.
Dear Oldfloss, I had been out running daily, (against my Dr's advice and against HealthUnlocked "rules" to take a day of rest,) but it works for me--and I don't run that far. I run with my dog for about .3 to .4 miles per jaunt with two such jaunts, generally, daily. Dagnabbit! I don't think in years past anyone said not to shovel snow daily--or not to rake leaves daily--or not to do farmwork daily! I feel fine even though I run almost daily--and I do it with no music, just the dog and I, and we enjoy it. He seems to know the words "run" and "walk" now, too. This has changed my mode of running, this running with the dog. Sometimes when he stops to sniff, poop, or pee, I am glad to stop to catch my breath. This way of running is working for me. My only problem is that our snow season has started and running in boots in the snow is "clonky." So maybe I will be forced to take some rest days for my legs and use them to exercise arm muscles with a snow shovel instead!
You are doing fine..it is what you need! It is great that you are out there getting the runs in... even in a clonky way!!! You take care of you.. stay warm, stay strong xxxx
Yeah, but running is a choice, not shovelling snow many not be.... but I get your point, running can be just a thing you do as part of your life, you don't not run for a bus because you had a run yesterday. Lots of people do run streaks once they have enough running with rest days under their belt (our own ju-ju- for one - she's written some great stuff about why and how it works for her) Sounds as though you are enjoying your short sessions.
Ach!!! 3-6 MORE inches due by tomorrow.... More arm work. The dog and I would rather run! He gave me a not-so-good look when I said, "Turn!" but he also slid on ice and landed on his haunches.... And I want to make sure we don't get hit by a sliding car on our road, so "Sorry, Dog!"
Have just been looking at the UK weather news and reading some of the snowy stories and looking at the photos on here. Be careful everyone and everyone else feel better soon.
My quest is now to 1. finish Week 5 of the Magic 10 and 2. continue running 3 times a week. I have now run 10 consecutive weeks x 3 and 3. To master squats. (Is 3 quests too greedy OF?) π€
Not at all.. go you..great goals.... and it is true.. loads of us are suffering from the lurgy..or the weather!!! Take care you and happy running!!! xxx
Iβve been hopeless at updating this. On Sunday I was all ready to run that 5k... but, I decided to repeat my first 5k attempt and set my tracker for a 3 mile run. It was a great run, nice and slow, mist coming off the football pitches and stream, and the sun just starting to come through in time for junior parkrun. This time I didnβt run 5k on my terms! 3.11 was going to be today, but the possibility of snow on ice has made me delay it... tomorrow itβs going down.
Will be slower than my 13 miles... Iβd be driving of course π. Iβm gonna be back on my 5k plan soon and I could actually run a parkrun soon... knocked a few minutes off my PB by tail-walking recently... the girls at the back had a couple of mini runs, but wasnβt my running day. Think I could have brisk walked to keep up but considered that may be bad for their self esteem so let them open a gap up!
Climbing the walls here. Minus 32C, slippery roads, just getting over latest lurgy and starting to worry that I won't be in shape at all for April and HM if this goes on for more than another week
Ugh, it is only January and winter is feeling too long. Hang in there. There is still time for your HM. Heal first, run second once Mother Nature lets up on the cold front.
Oh gosh.... and I am worried that I won't be in shape before my HM in March! Not as cold as where you are..but after yesterdays snow her, the pavements are like polished glass again!!! Hope no folk at the HM will mind about a few walking bits!!!!
Hope you are feeling a bit better my friend! You have had a rotten time!
It's been a frustrating winter. This time last year though I was sidelined with that dislocated hip so I'm trying to see the positive side, but man is it COLD π
Good news...I went out last week for a long, slow run with walk breaks and photos and managed that 10k. I really enjoyed it, so much to notice..houses still with their holly wreaths on the door. The 'sing a song of sixpence' sign with an arrow pointing to the village hall...I so wanted to peak inside...
Ducks on the pond. A pair of squirrels playing chase me in the branches.... and the signs for xmas trees for sale ( non drop) ! π²
I did feel a slight flutter in my right knee afterwards so didn't run again at the weekend. ( It was cold tooπ¨)...but I did go for a country walk.
This morning I trotted out with a 4k in mind, to see how my knee felt. There was sunshine and blue skies for a while. My knee was fine and the run went so well I kept going to make it 5k.
Hoping to go again later in the week for another pootle...
I hope those on the ic feel better soon, stay safe and warm everyone. Runs will wait if its too cold, snowy or icy! πxxx
Sorry to hear that lots of folk are struggling with illness, injury and cold weather - all the best to you all.
This quest is not going very well for me either
The first week I managed a couple of runs but hurt my back on the second run (pulled muscles where the harness, attached to the dog, goes round my hips), second week I could hardly walk let alone run plus started developing a sore throat and this week so far I am recovering from losing my voice but my back is still a bit sore! So week 3 will still be walking the dog twice a day but no running
On the positive - I have been on a strict diet for a couple of weeks and have lost a few pounds so that will help when I get started running again
Oh blimey!!!! Just one thing after another... I really hope you feel better soon... So many of us suffering with one thing or another.... I have aching sinus and face at the moment.. got really a cold face the other day! I shall start wearing a full face balaclava soon!
Hello you! Yes.. we have been running the quests for a while.. I love ding the, when I get my turn... You just do what you can when you can and keep popping back here... we so need your smile at the moment!!! xxxx
Aww, I will, don't worry. I haven't forgotten to pop on, I've been doing the RED January thing via Facebook, posting my walks on Strava (when I remember to set it, haha), cramming in up to 15 mins each evening after work and seeing mum. Its keeping up with it all that I find difficult, then my head gets moithered, haha π€£π€£ but I miss you and all my lovely friends, but I haven't forgotten you. I'll post some of my walks, okay? Xxx π
Aww, thank you lovely, often see your posts via emails, it's just at a certain moment like now, that I try and get on and reply. So glad I have lovely friends on here ππ xxx
1) Weight loss... well, still lower than I started the year...
2) Completed 9/12 of the Advent Fitness challenges. Turns out that 8 glasses of water in a day is much harder to achieve than I would have thought
3) RED January - not every day I don't think, but as RED January is a mental health endeavour I am going to content myself that in current circumstances sometimes letting a day go *is* the sensible thing to do
4) Running - 50% of the total distance run. Looking difficult to get that last 10k in but we'll see. I am still putting my kit on every morning!
5) Yoga - not bad, still on target to achieve 16 days this month, providing I don't miss more than a couple
6) Swimming - haven't done anything towards this goal this week.
Otherwise... it's been a largely crap week in which I have found myself (or rather the vulnerable people I care for) unexpectedly and badly let down, my trust betrayed.
