everyone and welcome to, yet another, new running week.

We are all so busy... life can be hectic .... and even more so for us runners!

Fear not, here is a place to take five, and enjoy a chat about our running adventures, trials, tribulations, successes, achievements etc.

Sometimes we don't feel like putting a whole post up, but just want to share something small, so this is a great place for doing that during the week.

If you're a lurker it is a great place to say a little hi, without the pressure of a full post.

So pull up a chair, slip off the running shoes, and settle down for a little natter:)

Wishing you all a happy , healthy ,running week

Last week was good as I managed to avoid number watching - more or less! With increasingly less favorable weather in the future (I’ve only started this malarkey in April) I’ve really only run in the rain (once) and cold (ie long sleeves) once as well!! I do live in the east but I’ve been out 3 times a week. Honestly. Next week promises more mixed up running albeit north of the border. Ever get the idea I mentioned lack of rain/cold too early!!! 😂🥶

I tried intervals for the first time today using an app recommended by ThunderSloth . It was great fun but was quite windy on the prom and when it said cool down I thought I had to start jogging again so ended up doing 6 repeats in the 2nd half ! I also ended up jogging home after we’d stopped for coffee as it started raining hard. My first run in the rain. 💦🏃‍♀️💦🏃‍♂️💦

in reply toDexy5

How did you manage to avoid rain up to now dexy ? 😀

Being retired I’ve been able to choose my runs Paulanoo. On Saturday it rained after we got back home. So very lucky as well..

Hi can you tell me what the app is please

Dexy5 profile image
Dexy5Graduate10 in reply toIchooselife

Hello Okbooboo, I’m not clever enough with the tech to add a link like @ThunderSloth. But it’s called JogRunSprint and is in the App Store. Alternatively look at ThunderSloth’s post of 1 week ago. Enjoy 😊

What is the app that you used and what distance is it for

Dexy5 profile image
Dexy5Graduate10 in reply toJohnnylewis

It’s called JogRunSprint and you can set your own warm up pause and cool

Down times . I did 5 mins warm up then 30 seconds jog 20 seconds run 10 seconds sprint five times 2 minutes walking pause then the jog run sprint another 5 times. Then 5 minutes cool down . So about 22 mins altogether but you can play around with that. I enjoyed it so much I’m having another go tomorrow. Distance depends on your cadence, but I ran on a bit longer to do 4 k

I have had a strange week. I was all geared up to do my very first parkrun on Saturday, but woke up with a migraine. And as mine go straight to my stomach, I really didn’t feel I could actually leave the house that day. So I spent the rest of the day feeling really ill, but also like I’d let everyone (family who were all behind me on this) down, especially myself. So do I give up running altogether?

Couldn’t wake up early enough Sunday, so ended up going out determined to go for a run in the afternoon. Now considering I have only ever run in the early morning, how weird was that!

Where do all those people come from, and what are they doing spread across my pavement? And who allowed so many cars that I actually had to stop and wait for the lights before I could cross the main road? And where do all those dogs come from?

Anyway managed 6.5k, will try a little hilly run tomorrow (early n the morning, obviously!,,) and then have another go at a parkrun next week. Hope the weather stays kind, as I really don’t want another excuse not to go!

Happy running everyone

When migraines come and you are out for the count you are not letting anyone down when any planned activities have to be cancelled. To be out running 6.5k the next day sounds brilliant to me! Well done you!

I had a chat with my 86 year old Dad about his running. He ran from the age of 24 to 65, mostly cross country and bare foot races. I never paid too much attention to his running as a kid, except to comment on the amount of ice-cream he ate after a run. He ran and didn’t look back and more often than not, he won. He says “if it’s in you, it’s in you” but I’m not sure 🤔

How lovely that you've got this to share Paulanoo . I bet he's so proud of you.

in reply toDexy5

Ah thanks Dexy. I regret that I never went to any race to see him run but for me, it was something he did with his running buddies.

I bet he enjoys talking about it with you now though. We have an elderly gentleman who is sitting on the same bench every week at parkrun enjoying watching now he cannot run. Many of us say good morning to him.

in reply toDexy5

Bet he enjoys Parkrun. We'll be sitting on those benches in 20 years time.

I told my Dad that he stopped running too soon - at 65. He agreed. He doesn't have too many tips for me - just run and don't look back and don't worry about injuries :)

Hi paulanoo, My memory is obviously not functioning properly. I thought that your Dad was running on a treadmill during a recent cruise? I expect that I somehow made that up!!

in reply toover61andstilltrying

He was cycling his 20km on a stationary bike 61++ while I ran on the treadmill in front of him. You have a good memory 😊

Ah yes! It is all flooding back to me now! 🚴 I knew that it was something impressive for an 86 year old gentleman!

Hi RFC, I have been running, ran Mon night & have a new phone so no tech issues, I find it really off-putting when tech doesn’t work, does anyone else feel like this??

Realfoodieclub profile image
RealfoodieclubGraduate10 in reply toMummycav

I hate it when tech fails, I am such a stats girl, for me it is part of the love of running 😀.

Dexy5 profile image
Dexy5Graduate10 in reply toMummycav

Yes Mummycav, when I looked at my watch at Parkrun I realised it hadn’t started counting (probably timed out) so I started it again and after taking my finishing token I had to carry on running to make sure it recorded 5k. How committed to stats is that?

Hi

I’m still plodding along, I joined a social running club, but am too slow to go with the regular running group so have been running with the walk run group as they were up to 15mins run x 2 (different plan). I have improved pace a bit at around 8min/km now but am being passed by the quicker walk runners! 😢. Wondering what the best strategy to increase pace is - work purely on pace? (I’ve been doing stepping stones and that does seem to help) or increase distance first so 5km is more easily manageable (usually do max 5km. Did 6.5 once)?

Strength exercises? (I did find I run faster when I haven’t been in work all day! - retirement?)

This week I managed to stay more or less at the front of the group most of the way round until about 3km when 3 people passed me 🙄

Thanks!

RealfoodieclubGraduate10 in reply toCrittermad

It must be hard running with others. I can’t imagine how I would cope trying to keep up with other runners in a group, I do have friends who say the best thing they did for their pace was to join a running group, so I think you are doing the right thing,

Training is a bit pants this week RFC. After promising to donate my miles to Ju-Ju, my body decided to bite me back and has left me crook all week. Did 5k on Monday with a bit of trail running but apart from that and Tuesday’s yoga, that’s been it, I didn’t even make it to the gym today 😩. Just starting to feel better again now. Katnap is dead keen to do Parkrun tomorrow without kittens so I’ll have to see but he may be TC free as well. Fingers crossed 🤞🤞🤞

Realfoodieclub profile image
RealfoodieclubGraduate10 in reply toTailChaser

There is so much going around at the moment, take it easy and look after yourself. We should start a training bank for those that can run so they can help us out 😀.

TailChaser profile image
TailChaserGraduate10 in reply toRealfoodieclub

What an excellent idea RFC! 😀 I’m just easing back into it now, 4K with eldest kitten last night and 4K with Katnap today, makes up for lack of Parkrun yesterday. Oddly I am really missing the longer runs, didn’t expect that.

Realfoodieclub profile image
RealfoodieclubGraduate10 in reply toTailChaser

My whole body physically relaxes when it knows I’m on my 7km route at about 2.5 Km I pass the same spot on my 5km but brain seems to just lower the shoulders and take a deep breath and zone out when I take the turning that makes it a 7km. It is really strange.

Well done one your two 4km’s.

Thanks RFC, longer run tomorrow 🤞😊

Hi all - missed one of my 3 runs this week due to a new bathroom being installed (finished now thank goodness!) but still managed to do a 10k on Wednesday. However the pleasant finish to the week was yesterday's Portsmouth Lakeside parkrun when I managed to crack 30 mins for the first time at parkrun - 29.24 and an age-graded score of 56.01%! My first one back in July was 37.27 so as you can imagine I was highly delighted!

New bathroom, sounds fun, after the mayhem builders and plumbers can bring to a house 😀.

Well done on you sub 30min Parkrun, You have done so well to knock nealy 8 mins off your time. 👍🏻.
