I don’t remember who posted a recent reply mentioning startfitness having good online running kit bargains, but thank you. These ASICS gel winter shoes (with titanium studs and a waterproof Gortex lining) just arrived, and I’m now excited about the idea of icy pavements! πŸ˜ƒπŸ˜ƒπŸ˜ƒ

In case any other ladies are interested, the link is below. At Β£40 down from Β£125, with plenty of sizes available, I thought they were worth trying (especially as ASICS gel shoes are my preferred choice for road shoes anyway).

Having checked other people’s reviews on these, which stated they ran at least a size too small, I ordered size 7 (my 2 road pairs of ASICS gels are 5.5 and 6). Surprisingly they seem to have loads of room in the toes, though, so I probably could have gone smaller. I don’t mind them a bit big for winter anyway. (I wonder if people’s comments had more to do with ankle width, as my ASICS do seem to have pretty narrow, tight fitting ankles.)

My ASICS trail shoes were too narrow in the toe box and gave me a black toenail. I ended up giving them away. So better too big than too small.

They look amazing btw. Look at Those Studs! Xx

I’m going to be a bit wary about how they’ll cope on non-iced pavement sections, though. I can’t seem to find an easy answer to mixed ice / snow / non-iced... Some winters our pavements get so icy that I may use these to walk round the block in as well!! πŸ˜ƒβ„οΈ

As they are so long, I thought my husband might be able to wear them too and we could timeshare! (He’s size 8, but sometimes takes a 7.) Sadly he finds the ankle too tight for his Achilles. (I wasn’t sure he’d like the pink soles either!πŸ˜‚)

I got the treadmill for ice! I wouldn’t share shoes as they may wear the wrong way for you and cause injury. Those studs do look the business though 😊

That’s why I’m looking at other options - I really want to stay outside and avoid the gym treadmills if I can! 😊

It’s ok, he says no to sharing! I just figured they probably won’t get used for that many runs in a year, so wouldn’t get particularly worn anyway.

I look forward to hearing how they cope with ice and snow. i cant even walk on it, let alone run!

Wow mountaindreamer, it looks like you have yet another pair of shoes. Are you sure your name is not Imelda? I’m beginning to think I need a 2nd pair.

Have fun running in them πŸƒβ€β™€οΈπŸ‘πŸ‘

Two pairs, similar but not the same, are a good idea as you rest different muscle groups. Big outlay to begin with, but you don't have to replace them as often ;)

In my defence, I only have 2 pairs of β€œactive” normal road shoes! πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚ (Both ASICS gel ones, which I’m probably going to stick with now.)

Despite everyone else seeming to find all Brooks, including the model I kept, small, that pair seem too wide for my forefeet, so I sadly get hotspots under the ball of my feet if I run far in them.

I’d been looking at getting Yaktrax run treads to strap onto my normal trainers for winter, but reports seem variable on those, and when these came up for about the same price I couldn’t resist! (It also occurred to me that normal, non-waterproof, shoes could get very cold running through melting snow!) We will probably now have our mildest winter on record, while I’m itching to try these! πŸ˜ƒπŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚

You don't have to justify it! i have two road and one trail. and don't ask me how many pairs of leggings and capris ;)

Oooh, lovely 😍 Might be a good idea to keep me on my feet (instead of my butt) this winter πŸ€”

They look promising, and reviews on these were good. It just depends on your foot shape whether this model would work, though. Because ASIC gels are my normal preference they are definitely worth trying for me.

I’m still not sure how well they will cope on un-iced pavement sections, but figure we have grass verges between most driveway sections around here. So I’ll have to try hopping between the grassy bits if I need to! πŸ˜‚β€οΈ

Ooh lovely shoes πŸ’•πŸ˜ƒ. Those soles look well grippy. Ice is treacherous as we all know Even grippy shoes might not have any effect at all. I end up wearing those yak trax things over the one pair of trainers that they fit over - a cheapo pair of ancient Karrimors. Snow tends to Clump under the shoe and then it just falls off. Bit strange but you get used to it To be fair we don’t get that much snow and ice fortunately If it’s lethally icy we can have a day off, or wait til later in the day when it’s had time to thaw. In icy countries they use studded run shoes; rubber i think πŸ€”

It was quite snowy last winter but ice wasn’t a big feature, here anyway. you just have to go very slowly and carefully

Are you somewhere much colder than uk πŸ˜ƒ

mountaindreamer profile image
mountaindreamerGraduate10β€’ in reply tomisswobble

No, I’m up in the NW, near Chester on The Wirral. 😊 I had to stay away from home last winter, but our pavements here have a habit of getting pretty lethal with ice, which makes even walks around our estate tricky. I’m already planning to walk near home in these too. 😊

We also head for the UK hills in the snow and ice with axes and crampons - so if I ever manage trail running then these will be great! πŸ˜ƒπŸ˜ƒ
