After my epic 18.5k trek on Friday healthunlocked.com/marathon..., and pinkaardvark ’s post about recovery runs the other day, I wanted to try and get out for some sort of run today. My legs were incredibly tired and heavy today so I went out without any time or distance goals. It was cool and breezy, so I crossed over to a more protected area where I could zigzag through the city streets, trying to avoid a head-wind for too long. I came to a hill I would normally run down and then meander the long roundabout way up. But given the hilly trail race I have coming up and the rarity I’m hitting the trails lately, I decided to skirt around and run up the shorter but steeper side of hill. Ugh! Yup, my legs are heavy. But I made it to the top and continued on. At that point I had decided to keep it a shorter run today and was almost home when Nothing Else Matters by Metallica came on my new playlist. Well, it was a news article about an autistic boy playing this song on his guitar that started this playlist so I couldn’t stop now! So I cruised on past my house, past the park with the kids playing football, when Should I stay or Should I Go by the Clash came on. Well I gotta Go!Go! Go! So I pick up the pace a bit more. The legs don’t feel tired now. I circle around the block down the other side of the park as the song ends and Wild world by Mr, Big comes on... a good song to slow the pace, cool down, and head back towards home. All in all - 7.24km done in 45:33, on tired legs that felt great at the end. Was it a recovery run or just a run? I don’t know; I just know I’m glad I got out and ran and managed to push myself a bit when normally I may’ve taken an extra day of rest😊

I love those exploratory find out and see what you do and where you go sort of runs. sometimes we can get too fixated on pace and time and the next goal. And your tired legs still took you on over 7k and up a hill! Yay! x
I'm finding if I can just get out the door and reach that 4-5k mark, I find my groove and feel so much better for it....it's just convincing myself to get out that door lately. It has really been nice just running for the sake of running.
Yes, things shift gear after the 5k mark
It’s all about listening to your body and knowing how to read it I suppose - and somehow you knew, despite heavy legs, that a run out was what you needed! Glad you had a good run, and well done, Sask. 👏👏👏 x
I am always so impressed by your runs SaskAlliecat. I guess after running 18.5k, 7.24k is a short meander. But it sounds amazing to me. It’s great how your music helps you along too.
Aw Thanks Dexy5. I wasn't sure if I was going to reach 4K when I started, so am quite pleased with the run. When I'm running the trails I find I can't have music on since I need to be in tune with my surroundings so it has been nice to listen to music again and get lost in the song. I'm sure passerby's are wondering about this crazy lady playing air drums, punching the air and singing while running down the street 😂
Ha, Pinkaardvark is keeping us on our toes Allie!
A great run, when you would have rested, sounds like it really worked too!
Not surprised you had heavy legs after that epic trail run, but they did what you asked of them and came through feeling better for it...thats brilliant.
A nice boost for you too. Hope you have a better, less stressful week at work.
😊xx
Thanks Jan. I love how this forum gets you thinking about things. Someone (I can't think of who it was now) posted something about Chi running not that long ago so after a quick you tube search I've been trying to implement the theory of that too, but need to check the book out of the library and read more about it. This is such a great forum. Rest days, recovery runs, engaging glutes, tight core and leaning forward slightly as on you run....it seems that I spend a lot of time thinking about, talking about, and researching running related topics lately 😆
Wow, that was a good run. It's amazing how motivating certain tracks on your playlist can be. I was down for an easy 5k today after running 18km on Friday. I could have run further but am trying to stick to my training plan, so stopped at 5km. I'm in need of a new playlist and will definitely get the Clash on it. Thanks for the suggestion.
It funny how a playlist can take off based on one song that you just have to have. When I looked at the playlists I had, this Metallica track just wasn't going to fit so now I have 2 new playlists, one with over 80 songs that is quite varied of 70's and 80's metal and rock and a shorter one with just the power ballads. I love a new playlist 😁 and the power of shuffle to spur on a great run.
whatever run it was Sask, t certainly did the job...starting on tired legs & finishing on strong legs sounds like a brilliant run, well done....and well done on your 18.5 trek....absolutely fantastic x
I'd call that a run! Not a recovery run. But maybe that's just me! Sounds a great run, music can really spur u on.
Oooh, one of my favourite tracks. And nothing better than a "I'll just run and see what happens" type of run. Great post & great running, SaskAlliecat.
