Set off for my second 10k run this morning. Thankfully decided that a fully waterproof jacket and fully waterproof cap were essential - along with shorts, as there was less to get wet!
Back along the Chester Greenway from the gym again, I headed for a simple out and back on smooth tarmac. A bit of messing around after my warm up walk - as I tried to start Runkeeper then seal my phone into a ziplock bag. Still took my hydration bladder with 500ml of water in. Iโm realising I like to sip on longer runs, and my tongue wasnโt long enough to collect drips from my cap! ๐
As I hit open fields and a head wind at 4k, the waterproof jacket got fully zipped up to provide protection. I think it would have been pretty unpleasant in my more breathable running jacket, as I doubt that can offer much wind resistance once itโs soaking. At this point, as the rain became fairly torrential, I passed a lady walking her dog in wellies and a full length coat, and carrying an umbrella. She seemed desperate to keep away and avoid eye contact - I think she was worried being a soaked running idiot was catching! ๐
The rain did ease for a bit, but then turned to a deluge with 2k to go. I was going slower than for my first (dry) 10k last week, but think my pace of about 7min/k by this point must suit me, as was really starting to feel as if I could run forever. ๐๐
A bit more fumbling around at the end, as I took my phone out of its waterproof bag to stop the app again. Sadly I now found out there was a casualty - my Bluetooth ear buds no longer had a working on/off switch (clearly โwater resistanceโ only goes so far...)
Decided not to go to the gym after for a workout this week, as Iโd not taken any dry gym stuff to change into and was leaving rather large puddles of water behind! ๐ณ
I now realise we Panther cubs are tough, and can run our 10ks whatever the weather - but Iโm not so confident in my tech surviving. So if anyone else is after a Garmin Forerunner 35, Iโm no longer waiting for the next Amazon sale. Iโve found Decathlon are currently selling them off for ยฃ109.99, and mineโs ordered! ๐โค๏ธ
Respect mountaindreamer, running in the rain for 10k. Well done . I hadnโt thought about keeping my phone waterproof when come across rain but a ziplock bag in my fit belt sounds good. Yes with the Garmin you set it all up on the phone and your ear buds before you leave the house and put it away and everything can then be controlled on your watch afterwards. Itโs money well spent and youโve got a lovely colour strap too at bargain price.
We are fortunate to have a beautiful day again today for my 3k but that may change when I do my 6k on Wednesday.
You are doing brilliantly and love your coordinated hat and jacket. ๐โโ๏ธ๐๐งข๐๐ฆ๐ฆ
Thanks Steve! I told myself I needed to check I could still run that far soaked in case itโs wet when I do the Hoylake 10k Run in a couple of weeks! Think the local weather forecast of rain all day was wrong, though, as itโs now DRY! ๐โค๏ธ
About the only thing the forecasters get right is when they tell us what the weather has been, am planning on going out this evening, forecast currently sunny and 19/20 degrees
Sadly I think Iโm always going to have to run first thing, as my spine gets more temperamental later in the day. So I either go or I donโt! ๐โค๏ธ
Ear buds are the only type I seem able to keep attached, Rob! Guess we all have such different ears. I bought a pair of โguaranteed to stay inโ shaped ones once, and donโt even have a clue which bit of my ear those are supposed to go in. They fit nowhere! ๐
Iโve just reordered these Pioneer ones from Sportpursuit, as they still have some stock in their sale. (My earlier pair are officially dead after I got them wet, so Iโll keep the new pair dry!) Although they are ear buds, and I do have to re-push them in at intervals, I like that the weighty battery is in the bit that clips to your clothes, so youโre never at risk of losing them! Theyโre a good price too, and they sound good.
Once I get my waterproof Garmin Iโll be happy whatever. (No music in the rain then, though, as I donโt want to kill anymore Bluetooth ear buds!) ๐
Iโm always intermittently broken, Stanley! My backโs relocked from running 10k again now...I need to get sponsored by Sports Therapists and Chiros. I rely on them to keep me moving! ๐๐๐
Wow! Impressive run, MD! And in heavy rain too?! Did you feel like Wonder Woman?! I always feel like a super hero on a mission when I run in the rain. ๐
Ah, the Garmin. I LOVE my Garmin, it has changed my (running) life. I got so fed up with the unreliability of the phone apps; Garmin has never let me down. You are going to love it, and with runs like this you deserve it!
Thanks Lorijay! ๐โค๏ธ Decathlon have the Forerunner 35 reduced with both the Aqua strap I ordered, or a black strap if you prefer. It says limited stock left, so Iโd perhaps be fairly quick if you want one? ๐
Oh just caught up with this news! Amazing run - well done! I did laugh at you trying to catch drips of water from your cap ๐ ๐. And youโll love your Garmin - I have the exact same one with the aqua strap and love it ๐ so much easier than using the phone all the time! Enjoy and ๐ฎ! X
Thanks for posting about the Garmin. I've just ordered one after much deliberation. I hadn't realised Decathlon had a sale on and you've saved me a few quid.
