Park Run Comedy of Errors

Set off in the car this morning feeling good and positive about knocking some time off my 2nd parkrun. Arrived, parked the car, dropped my inhaler under the seat, whilst fiddling around trying to find it ended up with cuts to hand and wrist, tissue wrapped around to catch the blood( not deep cuts more little gauges), inhaler in other hand. Off to warm up, that went well.

Go to the start line with my strategy of start slow to get through my toxic 5mins and then try to lift the pace gently from there, well no, 3 mins into the run lungs said NO! had to stop, leaning against tree couple of puffs on inhaler, waited while everything settled and set off again, very slow.

Wind was bloody horrible, wasn't enjoying the run at all, gremlins were having a field day and all but a coup d'état, little bas****s!

1.8 into the run (term used very loosely) lungs again rebelled and out with puffer again, thinking shall we just call it a day, and have record of DNF. Well no couldn't live with that, just started again cap then blew off so I had to turn back and run after that, happened twice before I decided to just hold the dam thing, (slow learner).

Anyway trundled on feeling blah, meh and all that stuff, came upon a lovely Marshall who kindly said "last bit, nearly there".

So happy to run through the finish funnel/tunnel, inhaler out again, calves felt like they were in the jaws of a great white, what a sorry state!

Sat in the car before driving home, shaking my head and grinning from ear to ear, what a morning, nothing pleasant or enjoyable about that experience but I did my 5k, no pb, official time 39:02, lived to tell the tale and still smiling. Got to be good for you!!

Hope everyone has a great weekend and more enjoyable runs than that one :) :)

Wow what a morning! But very well done Lori. The wind was a bitch this morning. 😫 x

Lorijay profile image
LorijayGraduate10 in reply toRipcurlrana71

Yep Rip, it really was a sh** morning and I HATE the wind with a passion.

Have you been running this morning? :)

Ripcurlrana71 profile image
Ripcurlrana71Graduate10 in reply toLorijay

Yes was out at 6.30 and fought the wind the whole way. Awful run/battle!

Well done for keeping going Lorijay. 🏃‍♀️👏. You still did it and that is what’s important. That wind certainly made a difference today - my post will follow.....

LorijayGraduate10 in reply toDexy5

Thanks Dexy. So glad to have that one behind me!! :) :) Looking forward to your post.

Well done for even starting in the face of all that. And well done for fighting the gremlins and pushing through to the end.

Easy runs are easy. Hard runs teach you x

Lorijay profile image
LorijayGraduate10 in reply toJay66UK

Thanks Jay, the only thing I could salvage from that run was to finish it. :) :)

Well done for carrying on! The wind was very windy this morning and I bet it didn’t once blow with you just against you! How does that happen? Even when you change direction!

Lorijay profile image
LorijayGraduate10 in reply toBridget007

You are 100% correct Bridget, every time I changed direction the wind did. I was pleading for just a little help but not to be..lol.. :) :)

Ooh well done you though for keeping going. It is really wild isn’t it? I woke up this morning to no electric. Storm had tripped the switch so luckily I just had to flip it back up.

Just about to battle into town against the wind for my daily strengthening walk. At least it’s stopped raining here now and the sun is out again but still really wild.

Lorijay profile image
LorijayGraduate10 in reply tolimberlou

Thanks Lou, yes not one of my most enjoyable running experiences though probably memorable. I have always hated the wind and today did nothing to alter that view😡 How are doing?

Tasha99 profile image
Tasha99Graduate10

He he well done for keeping going! And I thought my ParkRun was bad today! Keep running 🏃🏾‍♀️👌🏽

Lorijay profile image
LorijayGraduate10 in reply toTasha99

Thanks Tash. How did your PR go?

Tasha99 profile image
Tasha99Graduate10 in reply toLorijay

It was a toughie! Not sure why! One of those runs. I’m thinking of doing ParkRun tourism next week and going to Fountains Abbey. Random. Why not?

Lorijay profile image
LorijayGraduate10 in reply toTasha99

Maybe just rubbish runs all round. I was thinking about that this afternoon, going to different one next week, worried today might shadow my initial enthusiasm for PRs 🤔

Tasha99 profile image
Tasha99Graduate10 in reply toLorijay

Me too! But I’ve loved most of my others. Was overdue a bad run. Are you down south? I’ve really enjoyed it when I’ve branched out.

Lorijay profile image
LorijayGraduate10 in reply toTasha99

Birmingham, West Mids. 😀

Tasha99 profile image
Tasha99Graduate10 in reply toLorijay

I wish we all lived close together.

Lorijay profile image
LorijayGraduate10 in reply toTasha99

Same Tash!! Would be so good 😀

Tasha99 profile image
Tasha99Graduate10 in reply toLorijay

I think we should all arrange some kind of mid point ParkRun meet up

Lorijay profile image
LorijayGraduate10 in reply toTasha99

Most definitely, I would be a definite starter for that!!

Tasha99 profile image
Tasha99Graduate10 in reply toLorijay

We need an organiser. I vote Jay66UK 🤔😂

Lorijay profile image
LorijayGraduate10 in reply toTasha99

I second that as he can do all the logistics on a spreadsheet 🤣🤣

Tasha99 profile image
Tasha99Graduate10 in reply toLorijay

Exactly! 😂 I think it’d have to be Peterborough or somewhere 🤔

Lorijay profile image
LorijayGraduate10 in reply toTasha99

Maybe Tash we should find a central park run and post on the forum with an open invitation??

Tasha99 profile image
Tasha99Graduate10 in reply toLorijay

Hmmm are you taking the lead here Lorijay? 😂

Jay66UK profile image
Jay66UKGraduate10 in reply toTasha99

I am rubbish at organising people!

Tasha99 profile image
Tasha99Graduate10 in reply toJay66UK

Would be fun though, no?

Jay66UK profile image
Jay66UKGraduate10 in reply toTasha99

In the “I get social anxiety but love meeting people” sense of fun, yes 🤣

Lorijay profile image
LorijayGraduate10 in reply toJay66UK

We will all be a little anxious but still supportive and caring of each other.

Jay66UK profile image
Jay66UKGraduate10 in reply toTasha99

There was also a brief discussion of a non-running get together somewhere central. London seemed most likely.

Tasha99 profile image
Tasha99Graduate10 in reply toJay66UK

That’s not central is it? That’s bloody nearly France 😂

Jay66UK profile image
Jay66UKGraduate10 in reply toTasha99

I’m afraid I’m not the right person to organise something. But I would try to come along.

Lorijay profile image
LorijayGraduate10 in reply toJay66UK

Definitely wouldn't be the same without you :) ;)

Jay66UK profile image
Jay66UKGraduate10 in reply toLorijay

Set a date and I’ll try. I know I can’t do 22nd Sept due to a work commitment.

RunBrianRun profile image
RunBrianRunGraduate10

Oh well done on finishing and a great post too. Really felt for you. I ran a circular course today so I got the benefit of the wind behind me to balance it all out 😀

Lorijay profile image
LorijayGraduate10 in reply toRunBrianRun

Thanks Brian. Glad you had a good run, I would have killed for the wind behind me even for a km or two. Feeling a bit worse for wear this evening so just a quiet day tomorrow 😀

SaskAlliecat profile image
SaskAlliecatGraduate10

Good on you for finishing despite everything conspiring against you! And the grin from ear to ear; I find the hardest runs earn the biggest smiles (and biggest sense of accomplishment) once you actually finish them.

Lorijay profile image
LorijayGraduate10 in reply toSaskAlliecat

Thanks Sask. Yes the finishing earned the smile but have to admit to feeling physically wrung out now. Rest day tomorrow 😴

SaskAlliecat profile image
SaskAlliecatGraduate10 in reply toLorijay

Well done for completing it Lorijay! The wind and asthma really are a horrible combination x

Lorijay profile image
LorijayGraduate10 in reply topianoteacher

Thanks PT, usually only get exercise induced asthma so was a bit taken back today considering I had just started. Think I might reconsider running in strong winds 😲

You have no idea how comforting it was to read this! Thank you!

Lorijay profile image
LorijayGraduate10 in reply toEqui-geek

You are so welcome Equi !! If anything good can come out of that experience it's a bonus 😀😀 Not a good day? No need to answer if you don't want 🤐

Equi-geek profile image
Equi-geekGraduate10 in reply toLorijay

Oh it was fine really and lots of positives, including meeting a lovely runner in person that I had met on C25K forum - just not great from a performance point of view, but I think I know why. Lack of sleep and not done any swimming this week for aerobic fitness. Not like me to feel puffed out. It’s normally my knees or quads that limit me 🤣 live and learn!

Lorijay profile image
LorijayGraduate10 in reply toEqui-geek

Oh good, yes all something to learn. Must be so nice to meet someone from the forum. Just been talking to Tash about that 😀

Well done for persevering! It made me smile, feeling pants due to finally being defeated by the heat. I hope your next park run is less ‘eventful’ 😉

Thanks Maybe. So do I!! Hope you are enjoying the cooler weather :) :)
