First Post-Grad Run - First using Technology!

Finally dragged myself into the 21st century on Friday and replaced my Nokia brick :-)

Having downloaded Strava I set off this morning to run my first post-graduation run. I've ordered a cheap running belt from Decathlon but as it hasn't arrived yet I had to run with my phone in the pocket of my shorts.

Thought I'd check how I was doing at 2k and it seemed as if the app had paused itself - I can't be sure because I was still trying to run! Resumed it but decided not to run the whole Parkrun course if the technology wasn't working properly. Looking at the map and distance it's produced at the end though it looks pretty accurate (I turned approx 150m from the usual Parkrun turn).

Anyone got any idea what could have happened? I'm not technologically minded at all - it's taken me about an hour to be able to attach a photo 😂

Well done and so glad we are now in the same century! 😂 My thoughts are maybe you accidentally knocked your phone in your pocket and hit pause? 🤔

Yeah I did wonder that but would that cause there to be a break in the route or does it fill in the missing section? I think the phone said 1.1k and I resumed it at about 2k x

Yes I guess it does because you have paused the gps tracking...I’ve only just set ‘auto pause’ on Strava myself. If you hit record then click settings from the top left corner there should be an option on the next screen to select auto pause. So if you stop it won’t count that time until you start moving again. Or so I understand!

Actually just checked your Strava route and see what you mean - it hadn’t caused a break in your route. Weird! x

pianoteacher profile image
pianoteacherGraduate10 in reply to Ripcurlrana71

Yeah really weird! I was expecting there to be a break in the route and for the distance covered to be shorter. Hopefully I'll have the belt soon so we'll see what happens then x

Technology hey?? I’ve just got a Garmin watch so linked that to Strava now! 🤪🤪🤪 x

Lovely! I've heard they're much more reliable - I'd better start saving up :-)

They automatically stop when you stop if set correctly and resume when you do 👌🏽

pianoteacher profile image
pianoteacherGraduate10 in reply to Tasha99

I think it's doing that Tash because at the end of the run I was faffing about and accidently kept resuming it whilst sat on a bench 😂 It didn't count that as moving time. I was still running for the km I think it might have been paused for x

It’s clever stuff but you can turn it off if you want, think it’s called auto stop.

Thanks I'll have a look at that x

Omg I am definitely going slower than a slow thing !! I did the same distance as you for my first post graduation run and it took me 40+ mins !! Well done you 😊

pianoteacher profile image
pianoteacherGraduate10 in reply to Dawnie16

Thank you Dawnie! Don't worry about pace - it's such an individual thing. I was quite fit before I started this as I started working out regularly about 5 years ago. Before I started that there's know way I would be going the speed I am now :-)

Thank you...i will just keep plodding along...your right we are all different ages, different fitness levels, I'm proud of what I done and I'm a he'll of a lot faster than when I was sat on the couch 😀

pianoteacher profile image
pianoteacherGraduate10 in reply to Dawnie16

Exactly! I think that's the wonderful thing about running - we can all set our own individual goals :-)

Strava paused on me yesterday too. It seems to be sensitive! I have a fitbit which isn't always accurate but I run that as well so one hopefully will record the run! Also used Runkeeper yesterday for the voice prompts!

I use a Fitbit and only discovered the option of voice prompts yesterday!! Told me distance covered and pace every km.

I’ve found it to be pretty accurate. Still not making me

Any faster though!!

Which fitbit?

It's all really new to me so good to know it happens to other people too x

I have trouble with my Strava. I think it is actually the phone since other apps using my position also struggle. The ultra straight lines on your photo indicates that Strava is as not recording between the two points. It seems this has happened twice during your run.

pianoteacher profile image
pianoteacherGraduate10 in reply to diamondd

Ah that makes sense - thank you! I'll see what happens on my next run. The route is pretty straight so presumably the pace data will still be reasonably accurate?

Hi pianoteacher, Well done for developing your techy side along with your running. I am really behind with tech compared with many. Currently have a Nokia Lumina phone and down loaded a My Run onto it. The app is generally helpful, although it has thrown an error and stopped three times but it gives me distance, time, speed, calories, summary data and a few other bits. I have admired those Strava maps that folk are posting. What fun! Have you gone for an i phone? All the best with both your onward running and your tech.

No iphone - it's a Huawei Y6. Nice cheap one with tesco mobile! I only upgraded because I need to be on Whatsapp to receive communications from the Army band I'm in!?! My son's got mapmyrun on his phone but as I knew a few people on here with Strava I thought I'd give that a go x

Thanks for that. My husband and I had to have WhatsApp for a camp we were helping with. Interesting how we are nudged to move on in various directions by various means.

Are you sure you didn't just catch the bus for that bit?! 😁 also looks like you jumped in the sea at one point!

pianoteacher profile image
pianoteacherGraduate10 in reply to Marvo69

Haha! I think it's Bottle Alley messing with the GPS. You'll experience its joys during Parkrun - it's where my son and I play "Poo - Dog or Human?" during our runs. Hastings really is a lovely area 😂😂

Oh lovely! Can’t wait! I’ll bring my old trainers!

😂😂

Yay! Just finished my first fledged run too. I tried Strava but didn't get on with it as it seemed incapable of logging where I'd been and told me I'd been running in the river. I'm using Nike Run Club. Does the trick although I don't like the look of the maps it produces. I'm also using a cheap running belt from Decathlon (my new favourite shop). You're much faster than me:)

I'm just trying to get used to Strava. Used Mapmyrun on my son's phone but it seemed to overinflate the distance (showed 5.15km travelled when I'd gone a long way short of the Parkrun turn round). Seriously considering a running watch as I think they're supposed to be more accurate - couldn't of ever imagined myself saying that 10 weeks ago :-)

This is so addictive. To make things worse I’ve got friends who also run so now we’re all leading each astray. Already talking trail shoes for the winter 🤣

I’ve filled my Amazon basket with about £50 worth of reflective stuff for winter runs in the dark. It’s JUNE!!! Completely obsessed! Who’d have thought it?!!

in reply to BethMay

Exactly... this is dangerous. Now did you find yellow hi viz stuff for women as I can only find men’s sizes. I’m only 5’ tall and I can’t do the “just buy men’’s instead” malarkey.

BethMay profile image
BethMay in reply to

No I’ve undertaken extensive research (!!) and have found a purple one 💜. They do all sizes from S to 4XL. It’s like a ‘bib’. But there’s plenty of yellow around for all size of folk too 😊 No need to wear gear made for tall builders 😂
