Pain no pleasure, well only a bit ๐Ÿ˜‚

At what point does running 10k become pleasurable? Like I just find it so long! Will it become easier? Then will I like it more? Tonight was my 2nd. I enjoy 5k more I think.

Just run 5K then.. or 3 or 7.. do what makes you happiest... I love a short run.. a 5K and a Sunday, see where I get to ..or not, day...:)

At the mo' having to be .. gulp .. sensible as I am doing a HM plan... but, since I have devised it.. ] still get my short, medium and long run in... albeit... they all increase in distance as we move on :)

If your read ju-ju- 's last post.. it was reminding us never to forget, wherever we are on the running path, that this is about enjoyment...

I want to enjoy 10k! Do you think theyโ€™ll get easier?

Oldfloss profile image
OldflossAdministrator in reply to Tasha99

Well... I would answer, yes...every run makes us stronger... I love them, I love the fact that I reach a point and then feel like I can go forever...and now they are as pleasurable to me as any other of my runs... but I, nor anyone else can make them easier for you... it either comes or not.

If you want to enjoy them.. then slow down. choose new routes... and see how they evolve?

Yes I think Iโ€™ll go rural next week! Thank you ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿฝ

They won't get easier if your mindset perceives that distance as 'long'. It's not long, it is what it is, don't analyse too much.

Try and choose routes that stimulate your mind when running. During my HM preps l ran various routes in order to remain sane. Imagine doing 21k on a treadmill? Lol

Iโ€™m going to try trail running tonight! Excited!

Tasha, you've been pushing it lately. Maybe slow down a bit and increase distance more slowly. i enjoy the longer runs now, but to begin with i needed more than one rest day in between xx

Hi! Iโ€™ve done a couple of 10kโ€™s now and I find them quite hard and each time have got a blister on my foot and have felt very tired and much stiffer legs for a few days but I think I must slow down a bit!

I went out this evening and ran 5K which I really enjoyed, first run since I did 12K on Thursday! I think Iโ€™ll still do longer runs but definitely have more โ€œrestโ€days in between ! Struggling to get 3 runs in a week at moment though!! ๐Ÿ˜ƒ

Yes itโ€™s fitting 3 runs in isnโ€™t it! Good luck!

Youre another one who runs fast x

Maybe try slowing down on your 10k run? Just go for a run and not worry about pace and time.

Is your 10k pace the same as your 5k pace?

Choose a different route? Somewhere scenic?

Tasha99 profile image
Tasha99Graduate10 in reply to Slinkyminky

Omg nowhere near my 5k pace. 5k is 6-6.45 per km but 10k is 7-8per km.

defo going somewhere more scenic next time! Thank you ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿฝ

It took me 4-5mths of regular 5ks for them to start to feel routine. I'd have to say you may need to run a good few dozen 10ks in you want to feel the same way about them.

I did find running further than 10k made 10k not seem so much of a challenge so you could try upping the distance, also maybe enter some 10k races and or try 10k over different terrain ie trail or with lots of hills.

You'll definitely get there if you want to, but you probably do need to decide if running for an hour is a regular thing for you.

Thank you! I think itโ€™d be easier on a weekend to do 10k but thatโ€™s when the ParkRun is. Iโ€™ll keep plodding on ๐Ÿ˜‚ Definitely need some scenery I think next week. Thank you ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿฝ

As you get fitter and stronger yes they will get easier. You will find 5k not long enough for your weekly long run

Itโ€™s about enjoyment though. Do what you like ๐Ÿ˜ƒ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿƒโ€โ™€๏ธ

It does get easier. My first 10k runs were few and far between - and not easy. But after about a year of consistent running I decided I needed to crack the distance and from then on my long run at the weekend has been pretty much 10k upwards. When you start doing 14, 15, 16k and more then 10 suddenly seems a lot easier!

And happy birthday!

I know you like parkrun so wondered if anyone goes with you? If so can they hand in your token for you so that you can keep running maybe? I did this a few times when first building to 10k.

Ooh thatโ€™s an idea! Although I go faster on that and am knackered by the end! Good idea though ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿฝ

I found that 10 was easier when l got comfortable with 15. ;) 10 was shorter, right?

I like longer distances, some other guys don't. Run what you enjoy, distances are irrelevant, all that really counts is running itself .

I'm with you! My goal is a comfortable10k and I envy these people who say they went out to do 6k and next thing they know it's 12k later ๐Ÿคฃ That is not me!!!! Most of the routes I go around here are 4-5 miles and willing myself to do that extra 1-2 miles is tough, especially as I find a circular route much more inspiring to do than a there and back one. BUT I get home after 4.5miles and a couple of hours later just wish I'd pushed it a bit further. My personal plan is to keep doing the 4-5milers and not pressure myself to 6.2miles (sorry - I work in miles not Kilometers). One day soonish I hope I'll feel good and push it comfortably up again. I can guarantee it won't be a surprise and I'll feel every step but each step you do between now and then counts. Let me know when 10k is comfortable for you and I'll let you know if I'm there yet!!!!!

When I go out for my long run (my longest is 8k so far) I hit the trails. We have a giant park with trails everywhere through the woods. They are hilly, but some worse than others. I map out a route that will get me my distance. I find running on the narrower trails through the forest that weave up, down and around, much more interesting and enjoyable and you don't notice the km are whizzing by. Taking a friend helps too.
