How much exercise is too much?

Hi all

I'm just wondering whether I'm starting to do a little too much exercise (I never thought I'd hear myself say that!). I'm doing 3 runs a week (average of 30 minutes each), a yoga class, a 50 minute swim (about 66 lengths) and a HIIT session. I'm exercising 6, resting for 1, running alternate days.

Is that OK? Is it too much? Any advice greatly appreciated!

If you feel good then there is no harm.

If you burnout or stop enjoying it, ease back.

Thanks IannodaTruffe I am really enjoying the variety and the challenge but my running pace isn't getting any quicker - is that expected?

Many of my PBs came after a break from running of over a week.

Are you mixing up your pace, as described in the guide to post C25k running? healthunlocked.com/couchto5...

I think that might be what’s wrong with me. Im knackered after last weeks 8k run and could hardly run at all tonight, despite taking extra rest days, and Im feeling shaky after a run too. Part if it is not sleeping well too,

Pull back a tad...take some time to re-group... the runs will still be there...Lack of sleep is really horrid and impacts massively on the runs.

I will have to - but ive already taken two longish breaks

So what?

I have taken enormously long breaks... after my broken ribs... my calf tear... my trapped nerve...you will come back and the runs are still there.. waiting :)

Only: so i'm not being silly and not taking breaks :)

I think that sounds fine, but just listen to your body. If you feel your going in to a run with niggles from the prior runs it may be time for that 3-4 day break.

I do the gym 4 days and run the other 3 with yoga on one of the run days and I find this is fine as it has just become routine, but I sometimes back off the leg exercises at the gym or drop a run in the week and last week I took a 6 day run holiday and came back and did a PB 5k and a good long run tonight.

You are only competing with yourself though so don't try and race yourself into the ground :)

It doesn't sound too much from an actual exercise point of view if you are fit enough and fairly well rounded from a physical point of view (especially if the yoga isn't always the more vigorous sort). In fact, it sounds great.

But something has made you ask this question... perhaps it is more an issue of feeling you can't *not* do it (or you are doing it to chase something that isn't happening), or other things in your life are being pushed aside. It's fair to say that a lot of people do find aspects of their 'old' life drop away and often that's all to the good - negative drinking mates in the pub and such like. But it can sometimes happen with important things...eg if there's no time to talk with a partner, or your only topic of conversation is exercise.

Thanks GoogleMe - I just wanted to hear other people's thoughts I'm managing the exercise well and fitting into my routine without it overtaking. I just wondered whether I was doing too much; there's so much conflicting information out there it's tricky to know what's right and wrong!

I am presuming you built steadily up to this? If you are exhausted then maybe yes. If not, carry on. I have steadily built up to running every day, daily strength training, 2 spinning classes and 2 bodypump every week. I could never have done this 6 years ago but I feel absolutely fine. Its all relative,

Thanks ju-ju- Yep, I've built up steadily and am really enjoying my new routine. There's no way I would have been doing all of this 7 months ago, when I started C25K, but it feels good now and I'm really enjoying it.
